Like the previous year, PLUTO won't be eligible until NEXT year's awards because it premiered after September 2023.

Here we go again this year with classic arguments :

My favorite series nominated/win :" of course/deserved/it's the best for a reason"

My favorite series didn't get nominated/win : "it's just popularity contest bro, who cares/they're so biased/this poll is rigged/it's fan votes so it's irrelevant and doesn't matter"

Rinse, repeat every single year in January-March.

Which is worse: the wonky range for when the nominees aired... or the snubs?

So many shows missing. (No Dangers In My Heart? Wild). So many shows that aired in 2022... which still makes no sense to me, but whatever.

I forgot why I wasn't a fan of the CR awards last year. I immediately remembered today. There were a lot more deserving nominees among the individual categories, but it seems like they cap how many non-CR airing shows are allowed to be nominated. What a mess.

It would have been nice if G-Witch was nominated for more things, if just for restoring some respectability to AU Gundam shows.

Genuine question and not a troll post, when did we decided altogether this CR popularity contest mattered?
Or is it just me, who's out of touch with CR's popularity contest's significance?

It never mattered. Some people simply cannot control their emotions and get so pointlessly worked up over a silly popularity contest.

To be fair, CR was the one who started an "official" anime award ceremony and ever since then whenever you hear the words "anime awards" you'll most likely think of Crunchyroll, which in all honesty is a genius clever marketing tactic.

I and a lot of people get more entertainment from seeing people getting so upset about this. If your "best/favorite" ain't there, don't even bother and move on.

The thing is, people do pay attention to these awards and if CR gave shoujo and josei a bit more respect so would the anime community at large. For my part, not giving Sacrifical Princess in particular any nominations was a huge oversight. At least My Happy Marriage got one.

I guarantee outside of the AniTwitter sphere nobody knows Crunchyroll even has an awards show. But they did give a nom to My Happy Marriage and My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999 for best romance and those are both shoujo.

This simply isn't true. AniTwitter is SMALL even within social media spaces. Mainstream media covers the awards now and your average joe watches anime.

Once again, my biggest issues with the nominations are the same as the year before. Though not going to bother going into the whole Fall cutoff because I've talked about it enough:

- You do not need to have Continuing Series, New Series, & Original Series when two of the three are just going to be half or more of the AOTY nominees. Just stick to AOTY and Original, especially since the latter is always less likely to be represented in AOTY. Or at least define Continuing as something with a higher number of episodes than literally a S2.

- Genre categories are still a MESS. It’s really not that hard to allocate shows to a genre, whether beforehand or afterwards (looking at the number of votes a show received in each category and going with the highest). And please get rid of Fantasy. Every single one of these nominees could fit another genre (+ Adventure if they want to throw that in instead) that isn’t mainly tied to a setting by their standards.

- Get rid of the Best Song category if you aren’t going to keep it to insert songs, its never not somewhat repetitive considering judges clearly don’t vote for OP/ED based on visuals alone. Heck, I’d even make an allowance for EDs where it’s just credits on a black screen (i.e. CSM ED1, Fate/Strange Fake, etc...). Like we're really going to not nominate Guitar, Loneliness, & Blue Planet or any of Bocchi's other songs over its OP?

- I know there's a disproportionate amount of Demon Slayer representation considering how mixed the season was received which does not give me a lot of faith that some judges are actually watching more than a handful of the most popular shows... but I would have substituted Abby Trott in ENG VA for almost anyone else (including Abby Trott herself in other shows where she actually got to speak more than one line like Yamada-kun at lvl 999). Nothing against her, but a role where someone barely speaks and shows about maybe three separate emotions grunting just doesn't belong here, especially next to the other nominees. And I am not against non-verbal roles completely (I think Emily Fajardo in Ranking of Kings would have been a solid nominee last year because of just how expressive Boji can be). But there were so many interesting, varied, and complex performances this year (Miranda Parkin as Miyo in My Happy Marriage, Major Attaway as Queen in One Piece, Aleks Le as Thorfinn in Vinland Saga, Anjali Kunapaneni as Kiruko in Heavenly Delusion, I could really keep going...), that much like Crispin Freeman's nomination for a cameo last year, it just feels insulting. It feels like every year this category has an issue for one reason or another that are not reflected in the JPN VA category and it's tiring.

- There's a lot of repetition overall this year, to the point where it's primarily just action shows (particularly the big hits) + Oshi no Ko everywhere in major categories. I completely understand that popular shows will always do well, but I kind of expect a nomination list chosen by a select pool of judges to have a bit more diversity and thought put into them. I still maintain that the easiest fix would be to just give each judge a smaller number of categories to focus on so they can really hone in on the best picks for each, but still have have every judge vote for the major awards like AOTY. Because otherwise you get judges just trying to fill out a ballot for Cinematography or Art Direction and just throwing in Demon Slayer S3 or Hell's Paradise because they can't think of another show, let alone a non-action show god forbid.

- I'm assuming The Boy & the Heron isn't eligible due to the cutoff date in September, but Blue Giant released in NA in October so that feels very odd (and both released in Japan/internationally prior to September). I feel like outside a random film festival screening that I know the majority of judges didn't attend, either the latter shouldn't be eligible or the former should have been? Or at least not enough judges should have been able to see it by September if it was available in some countries.

With that all out of the way, my own personal wins and snubs that don't matter as much in the long run:

- I'm really glad Trigun Stampede got some love as it was mostly overlooked by the public. I absolutely would have thrown it into AOTY over Demon Slayer S3 though.

- Same with One Piece. With Best Fight gone, I sort of expected it to get completely snubbed outside of maybe continuing (which I can completely understand, its a long af series), but seeing a nomination for Mayumi Tanaka especially was really nice.

- I’d say not including Kenji Muto for Trigun Stampede or Morio Asaka for Loving Yamada-kun at lvl 999 for Best Direction is a massive oversight, but honestly I think it’s just a tough year. There aren’t any nominees I would immediately throw out either except maybe AoT purely because it’s a special, not a full cour series. Maybe Oshi no Ko because it had the most mixed direction for me personally, but I can understand why a lot of people would like it.

- Would have liked to see more love for non-action shows outside of genre. Like throw in My Happy Marriage in for Art Direction, Yamada-kun in for Direction or Main Character, DIY for Character Design, etc...

- Speaking of Character Design, while I do really like JJK S2’s more simplified designs compared to S1, I kinda had to give an edge to the only nominee that is offering a wildly new take on pre-existing designs (really could have thrown in an original series like G-Witch here judges…).

- Missing Red:birthmark (G-Witch) in Best ED is a massive oversight in my book. Easily one of the strongest EDs this past year. I also loved Raise from One Piece, but at least I expected judges not to consider it. Props at least for picking the correct CSM ED out of a smorgasbord of them.

- Link Click S2 had one of the best OPs last year, but I know it's not even eligible so its okay Sad

- Ya'll chose the wrong Johnny Yong Bosch reprisal role here, but I did really love Austin Tindle in Trigun Stampede as well, and I'd rather have unique nominees than the same show twice.

Disappointed to see BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! get shut out, after such a strong showing with the editors here at ANN and its multiple nominations in the r/anime awards this week. I thought we might at least see Tomori nominated as the “Protect At All Costs” character.

You had me at Megan Thee Stallion. Her presence alone makes this awards show better than the Oscars and Golden Globes combined.
