I loved watching this on Crunchyroll. Is the manga as good as the anime? How long are each?

I remember reading the first volume of this awhile back but it just didn't click with me. I guess that all of the showbiz stuff felt too cliched, or maybe I just didn't like how Kyoko did a complete 180 in the first few chapters.

I find the manga can pack a bigger punch than the anime, and I finally just bought vol. 1 and 2 Smile But the anime can deliever some scenes from the manga even better.
The art really bugged me at first, with Ren's bizzarre head, but it kind of grows on you, and it's different from most Shojo artwork with eyes the size of saucer plates and ugh, that's not bad, but I think I can mention a few where the art has no originality, etc.

The manga is much better than the anime. Like most series, the manga version is more detailed, more fleshed out. What really sets it apart from the anime, however, is the artwork. The anime looks to have been done cheaply, and leaves out much of the detail of the characters - the difference in taking only 10 minutes to draw someone instead of 30. The same thing with the backgrounds. I do think the anime nailed the voices, though.

The anime sadly doesn't do the manga justice. I think the animation is really what drags it down (I love the cast). Even so, I am looking forward to a second season - if I don't get to see the Dark Moon arc animated, I will mope in the corner for a very long time.

I agree with the negative...

The male character deisgns turned me off to the series. I know it's a shallow thing to do, but I did like the story (And the girl that goes "Mo" all the time).

This is one of my favorite manga series.

Nakamura is great at making absurd, over-the-top moments seems perfectly normal.

The arts does have some problems, but I actually like her character designs. I do think she has problems drawing characters in side/profile view, because they look off somehow at that angle. Especially the outrageously pointed noses.

Deep down I really just want Ren and Kyoko to hook up already, but it's a long, LONG ways off (if it's ever going to happen at all). And once it does, well, that's the end of the series; because once she's fallen in love and accepted that, well...there's no where else for her to go. And she's far too entertaining to watch for me to want the story to end anytime soon.

You mean Moko? I forgot her real name, so that doesn't make me much better off than you....

I also liked the anime a lot. Was gonna buy the manga but:

A) Too long, not enough shelf space.

B) I'm not letting myself start a new series until I finish Fullmetal Alchemist.

C) Art style is weird. Liked the anime's style better (contrary to everyone else).

I disagree about the art style. I have a hard time thinking of any manga series with such beautiful attention to detail, especially the facial expressions of the characters at key moments. The only complaint I can think of is she draws the legs way too long. Other than that....Gorgeous! Razz

I also think the anime doesn't do the manga justice. The lack of detail and flat colors, ugh. But I still watch it because Skip Beat is my favorite series of all time! I hope it never ends.

I'm just waiting for it to finish before I bother reading it. One thing will make or break this for me. Sho/Shou/shit/w/e. Yes yes yes. He isnt so bad anymore. Whatever. If she ends up with him then I'm not gonna bother no matter how good. The ultimate revenge would be her ending up with Ren and turning Sho down. For once please pick the nicer guy and turn down the arrogant, concieted, and selfish brat please. Is that so hard to ask?

The manga is just as good, if not better. Hilarious scenes, endearing moments with the characters, more background info--it's good. As for the length, there are currently 21 volumes out, w/about 6 chapters each, and chapters are more or less 30pgs. Wasn't too sure what you were asking exactly, so I hope this answers your Q. =)

I'm mostly with you on this--particularly the bit about the facial expressions. Nakamura can take a good scene and ratchet up the impact greatly with intensely expressive faces. My only real problem with her art is that occasionally the heads are disproportionate in relation to their elongated bodies. I don't mind stylistically long bodies or legs, provided the head doesn't end up looking a grapefruit on shoulders (sorry Nakamura!). Well, at least it's not as bad as the xxxHOLiC anime, though. Thank goodness.

Not to nitpick too much, but I think it's worth noting that "invariably men" isn't exactly true: the one person who has subjected Kyoko to what is probably the deepest emotional abuse is in fact a woman--her mother. The particulars haven't been covered extensively, though, so I guess it's not that big a deal; just thought I'd mention.

I stumbled on Skip Beat in anime form on Crunchyroll and happened to fall in love with it... When the episodes didn't come out fast enough for me I started to devour the manga. I have seen allot of anime and read allot of manga. Seen all types of drawing styles etc. Each one has its own quirks and foibles but I have found if the story is good then I can really enjoy it no matter how it looks. I find that even if I start out thinking "this is kinda funny looking" after I get into the story I really cant see it drawn any other way. Anime smile Hurray to Manga authors everywhere keep it coming!!!

You know, I don't like shoujo. Like at all. Japan makes some of the most irritating female leads I've ever encountered in an entertainment medium, and their romances so very, very rarely have any sort of chemistry or believability. But for some strange reason, after reading this review, I felt inclined to give this one a try. I wasn't really expecting much, but maybe this one would be different.

Seriously- wow. An actual strong female heroine- one who actually cares when she's been stabbed in the back and actually has pride. She's got the right balance of enthusiasm, determination, will power, and humanity so that she doesn't come off as annoying even at her most hyper, and she's got a level of darkness that makes her both incredibly intriguing and multifaceted. The supporting cast, while not quite as interesting, does a great job of making Kyoko shine and helping to move the story forward, and I just can't get enough. I never expected to love a shoujo story so much

I've only read the first three volumes so far, so it'll be a while before I catch up with the domestic release, but I'm surprisingly excited to get there.

I agree. The legs are absurdly long....

I think she is fantastic at drawing facial expressions. You can tell exactly what a character is feeling just by their eyes, and not every artist can pull off that kind of expression with their art. In fact, I've seen very few artists who can pull that off (with just the eyes).
