I knew Black Jack was big, but I didn't know it was that big. Wow.

Nice article makes me feel bad I haven't been keeping up on reading the manga. I also didn't realize he's had so many projects.

That was quite informative. I had no idea there was so much of Black Jack. I picked up a random volume of the manga during the summer and it made for great reading on the beach. I've seen the "Hands of God" movie, one of the newer TV shows, and some of the OVA episodes. I think my favorite English dub voice for him is Kirk Thornton.

The reason I've got Black Jack on the brain isn't just because I just finished devouring the last of Dr. Tezuka's original stories; it's because we've just gotten two NEW stories, new installments of Dezaki and Sugino's OVAs from the 1990s! This news initially came out when Dezaki passed away, but it turns out that a significant amount of production materials (character sheets, screenplay, some storyboards) were produced for two additional episodes before the production wrapped in 2000. When the animation crew that worked together on the originals came together to celebrate Dezaki's life and see him off, they decided to finish the job. Consequently, a DVD featuring Karte 11 and Karte 12 of the 1990s Black Jack OVA has just been released in Japan this past week. I'm positively tingling with anticipation; to me, the realization of these two episodes is something like finding an unpublished Tintin story or one of those lost Dr Who episodes.

Being a person who owns all the OVA's on DVD, this news is really exciting. I had no idea that this material had been found before reading this column!

I knew there was one new episode but I didn't know there were 2. Awesome! I remember staying up super late a few months ago and watching the live stream as they dubbed one of the episodes. It was cool.

Great job here, Mike! Black Jack truly is one of anime & manga's greats. I haven't seen the 90s OVA series (kind of hoping that with Karte 11 & 12 out a company might license rescue the OVAs and give it a "true" complete release), but I did watch the 2003 X-Mas specials and about 17 episodes of the TV series... Great stuff.

And it's great that Vertical released the entire thing. I only have a few volumes right now, but eventually I do plan on getting all 17 volumes.

Oh man, I do loves me some Black Jack. Not as much as Mike does, apparently, but he was on the top of my rental list back in high school.

One of the nicest things about Black Jack is how easy it is to show his stuff to non-anime fans and have it be well recieved. I remember playing the first movie for my high school Japanese class, and getting some very animated reactions from the students who opted to watch it. It turned out to be about 10 minutes too long for our class... One guy pretty much begged our teacher to let us finish it the next day becuase he was so set on seeing the end. It was great.

So- who should I be begging for these 2 new OAV episodes? Wink

I've only ever seen the Black Jack movie almost a decade ago, which I enjoyed, but I think after reading this article, and considering they were helmed by Dezaki and Sugino, a purchase of all the OVAs is definitely on the cards!

Funny you should say that... Must be the time of year for Doctors to get two "new" missing instalments! Smile

Yet another series with a ready-made Animax dub just waiting to be seen by a wider audience, and probably won't. I know dubs of shows are supposed to ultimately be owned by the original licensors in Japan, but Animax dubs must have some sort of exclusivity on them since they never seem to show up anywhere else. (And I mean "anywhere"!)

There's so many series they've shown completely dubbed into English that won't be dubbed by anyone else in the near future, like Ghost Sweeper Mikami, Toward the Terra, Gundam ZZ and Future Boy Conan, to name but a few.

The Animax English dubs all definitely deserve wider recognition, if only to get them preserved for a wider audience!

Well, they star an adult male, so there's two counts already against anyone getting them. Wink

I think my first real exposure to Black Jack was Black Jack The Movie when it aired on Ani-Monday. I really enjoyed it. Then about a year ago I borrowed volume 1 of the manga from my library. But I couldn't reallt get into it. I guess I'm one of those few people who don't like Tezuka's art. =/

This is where I first watched all the eps. They also have the movie. It is a simply compelling series. Pinoko character is over-the-top for me, but the doc is awesome. It's the aspect of his humanity with all its strengths and weaknesses that makes it so amazing. Check it out on Crunchyroll. The good news - the eps are subtitled.

Agreed, Kirk portrays him perfectly. Smile

In one way, I'm not surprised Black Jack is this immense; on the other hand, I am in awe of just how much media exposure he's had. I feel so small considering I've only seen a couple of his OVAs.

When I started writng for my friend's blog, Black Jack was the first topic of my column. I was suprised that none of my friends had heard of the series.

Yet as I read this, I realize how little I actually knew about the entire history of the series. I did hear about the live action films, but I was still just gettiing into the series, and nevr looked it up

Kudos for anoter great article! Learned a lot, too.

The Animax Asia dub of Nodame Cantabile (which was actually done in the U.S., IIRC) is on Crackle, since both Animax and Crackle are owned by Sony. Likewise, AXN Asia (also owned by Sony) has been airing dubs that premiered on Animax (Shakugan no Shana II, Gurren Lagann, Inu-Yasha, etc.), which is a nice callback to the days before Animax Asia started up and AXN showed a lot more anime (like the infamous "Samurai X" dub of Rurouni Kenshin TV which is also on Crackle).

Been a while since the Black Jack TV specials/series dub was aired so presumably the license expired.

I once visited a medical museum to view a temporary exhibit featuring Black Jack amongst other exemplary manga. Though the exhibit itself was underwhelming, my excursion did grant me the opportunity to compare arrays of preserved bodily parts from centuries past.

Great article form what I read (I bookmarked it to fully read it later and to use it as reference ^^ ): I own the whole manga (Italian version) and watched some of the OAVs and of one of the TV animated series, but since I love Black Jack (he is one of my most favourite character ever) I plan on watching more.

The manga still remains the most important thing to check out, though... but all Osamu Tezuka's manga (and animations) are. Smile
