Well, right off the bat, Mike picking Mad Bull is extremely timely and now outdated. Having that on DVD will be great, and we can all hope for some massively touched up video quality. What I love about Cyber City is how unapologetic Kawajiri makes the protagonists. They're all not-so-nice-people, their boss is an asshole, and so is everyone else in the story. The fight in episode two and design elements for episode three make it stick out the most of me, it's sometimes just a really beautiful show despite the story and characters.

The thing about GitS for me, and I've only really watched it this year, is that it's not that good. At least not from the 2012 perspective on humanity, cybernetics, and the mixing of the two. The message and questioning of the "blur between human and computer" just feels old and tired. Maybe it was something new in 1995, but the themes of Patlabor and Jin-Roh only become more relevant as GitS' become less so. Watch Patlabor 1 and GitS back to back, the slow paced shots of the cities with Kenji Kawai music is just...slow. The atmospheric element is retreaded ground, and not for the best. Right now that film sits with Sky Crawlers on my Oshii feature film list, but I have a feeling it might drop further if I give Sky Crawlers a rewatch. I have no idea why I can't latch onto the GitS film so tenaciously, but there's just too much missing from it that the series makes up for. I don't find it visually impressive either, it just looks like the typical IG film at the time.

Suffice to say, Patlabor 2 is one of my favorite films, or anime overall, from that decade. It might be slow, but there's still tension building and appropriately slow scenes completely with all of the typical Oshii-isms that work better for a series that often mixes in comedy. I'm only watching it currently, but I think Cardcaptor Sakura might also be able to make my list; forget the DVDs, the BDs make that anime gorgeous.

Ok.
No Ghost In The Shell. Mad
I am mortified, cause....it's the best movie....ever!

Anyway, still listening to the show and I gotta say I love this kind of Best-List shows, the 80s one made me go and watch a lot of old sci fi stuff that I hadn't touched upon so far.

So...which version of Kite is Justin talking about, commercially I mean? The recent "remastered" version? Thinking about getting it

Oh, and the Now and Then is Fall 1999, just makes it. Maybe you're thinking of some R1 release? Because ANN, MAL, and Wiki all give the same dates for the Japanese airing.

Hey now, hey now! Now and Then, Here and There is 90s. Just barely 90s (it came out in October 1999), but it's still 90s.

EDIT: Got to the portion where Justin admits his mistake. Okay, cool.

The reason I know this is because it'd make it on my top 10 list... which I might list. I'm thinking of doing my #10 - #6 here. It just depends if I'm up to typing all of the reasoning out.

I'm liking the diversity of the lists (or, well, at least initially). And similar to the 80s ANNCast, the 90s show is reminding me of series I need to see or revisit. I haven't yet seen Lain, Marmalade Boy, Di Gi Charat, Nadesico (I'm waiting for Nozomi's release), Kite, Macross Plus, Berserk, or Memories. Nor have I completed watching Fushigi Yugi, Trigun, Evangelion, Outlaw Star or His and Her Circumstances.

EDIT: Well, I'm not an avid movie-watcher, and there are many 90s classics that I know I haven't seen, but I'm going to agree with Justin 100% on Gattaca. Damn, I love that movie. It kicks me in the gut every time. I first watched it in a high school science class, and I was really taken by it.

Oh man, Justin, it sounds like I'm going to have to check out the movies on your list. It seems like I can rarely ever go wrong with your selections (I checked out the old black and white Metropolis film and really enjoyed it).

And, holy crap, I love Se7en. Awesome, awesome thriller.

Other 90s movies I love include Contact, The Last of the Mohicans, Little Women, and Beauty and the Beast.

Contact plays all of my right buttons. Ellie's relationship with her father (which brings me to tears every time); how the main character is a headstrong, opinionated woman within the science field; the scenes where she's traveling through the worm holes; the idea that we aren't alone in the universe; the struggle between faith and evidence. I love, love, love it to pieces.

The Last of the Mohicans has a really great musical score. And it tickles my romantic bone. But it's not Nathaniel and Cora that get to me, surprisingly enough, but Uncas and Alice (even though they rarely got much screen time). The movie has its issues, but I can't help loving it.

Little Women inspires me. I love watching Jo's story - she was the woman I wanted to grow up to be when I was a little girl. I love seeing smart, well-read women with ambitions and who act a bit tomboyish. Also, I love the focus on family the movie has - family has always played a big role in my life.

And, hell, no movie list is complete without my favorite Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast. Belle was another one of my role models growing up.

And I'm normally not one for romantic comedies, but I quite enjoy While You Were Sleeping.

And while it's not a great movie, Hook is still a fun one. So are Home Alone and Home Alone 2.

And I wanted to mention Field of Dreams, but that's an '89 movie. So is Tim Burton's Batman movie.

How can anyone hate Radical Edward? I think she's perfectly at home in the quirkiness and bizarre off-beat nature of parts of the Bebop world. I have a hard time believing that anyone who claims to get that world can really dislike that character.

Ugh, the Macross Plus dub was horrible. Myung's VA couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, and as great as Bryan Cranston is of an actor, his Isamu wasn't all that great, either. I think the only person who pulled off a solid performance is Richard Epcar, as Guld.

I love Patlabor 2 so much. But I kept the Manga Entertainment DVD because I also quite enjoy the UK dub, despite some inaccuracies. Peter Marinker is an excellent Gotoh, and his best stuff is in his conversation with Arakawa about a "false peace". Not huge on Sharon Holmes as Nagumo, though, but she does get certain qualities of her.

Yeah, Gundam Wing doesn't really hold up. The mechanical designs are pretty good, though.

I'm shocked and amazed that Zac picked Nadesico, I was worried it would get left off all the lists. In my mind, one of the best satirical shows out there.

Amazing timing on Mad Bull 34 DVD being announced by Discotek, it's trashy, racist, and mysogonistic but the manga is entertaining in it's stupidity, the scanslator actually had a Sleepy sleeping with women, and Sleepy killing people counter just because the series is nothing but those two things.

Berserk is really only low fantasy in the Golden Age arc and the entire point of that arc is to bring up how Guts went from being the adopted son of a mercenary to being a man fighting against monsters, and casualty.

Otaku No Video needs to be remade with a bunch of guys showing off their Madoka body pillows.

My problem with Cardcaptor Sakura is that the manga was the first time I was ever creeped out by anime/manga and I could never see the series the same way after spoiler[Sakura's teacher gave an 8 year old an engagement ring.] .

Never saw past episode 1 of Nadesico despite loving it because I learned about what happens to Gai and simply lost interest in the series. I liked the other characters but I loved Gai.

I was disgusted when I watched Perfect Blue by the fake rape scene for Double Bind , but I couldn't take the stalker seriously (has anyone met an otaku that actually looked like that).

Gundam Wing is entertaining trash, but the plot is really stupid with the opening arc basically being 5 teenagers rebelling against the pacifist benevolent Earth government (which was never evil outside the first 10 seconds).

Deathscythe Hell is still one of my favorite mecha designs, I love the demon wings it has.

Great, fun episode to hear. These are my major impressions. I probably need to watch Martian Successor Nadesico. The things I have heard about it sound very interesting.

I have to disagree somewhat with Bamboo on Serial Experiments Lain. I think it has cool concepts, but the execution is not very good. I agree with Zac that the animation can be ugly.

I watched Kite and found it incredible gory and over the top. I am aware that some people have shitty lives, but Kite is too much. The story is not that great and is predictable.

Finally, I disagree with Mike on Gundam's animation. Gundam Wing and other 90's series had strange character designs, but the animation was not bad. For me it is hard for Sunrise to do crappy animation. Gundam Z, The 08th MS Team, Gundam 0083 and Gundam Unicorn have amazing animation.
