OMG!! I just happen book a hotel right in Akihabara for June 6, and according to Animaxis, the theater's first big event happens to on the 6th.
 Too bad it looks like there's a lot of reservation paperwork to do though . . .

I wouldn't be surprised if they figure that a significant minority of the audience for such a theatre would be foreign tourists who are anime fans and want the "authentic experience", whatever that means, when they visit Tokyo.

Anyone want to start taking bets as to when it goes under?
Only a couple anime movies are released each year, and there's not enough of a back catalogue of feature-length films to support them if they go the rerelease route.

At first when i saw only one screen, I was like "huh?" But then i remembered that it said Anime-only. Think it maybe could have a chance because not that many anime movies are released at once, right?

Remember that in Japanese (NOT English) anime means any and all animation. That's everything from Akira to Toy Story

That's what I was about to point out. That the cinema would likely screen only animated movies not just Japanese animation that in the west we refer to as "anime"

I disagree. I think this movie theatre will be successful. Animation is much more popular in Japan than it is in US. |

Which is why Shrek II had one of the best opening weekends of any movie, ever.
And I know that it's not just Japanese animation, but I still think its going to fail. Most animated movies are either direct-to-video or tie-ins to TV shows that are popular at the time, and those probably won't be shown there. And then even if you add in European animation and American animation (minus the 70's and late 90's Disney that everyone tries to forget), you still don't have enough to sustain a theater over the years. |

I hardly think it's going to under.
They also mentioned a marathon of anime series' of sorts. Obviously the theatre is capable of projecting from a DVD source. The title range is now limitless. |

What says they cannot show the same feature twice? I guess this theatre has all it needs to survive. For years to come. ^__^

That sounds like really interseting place I wish they had something like that in the US but I guess that's asking too much right.
