Kanata's and the rest of the others uniforms are similar to the uniforms used by the German Army during World War 2. They even have German Army inspired equipment and vehicles like their Stahlhelm (Steel Helmet) and Karabiner Kar98K rifles, MP-40 Machine Pistol, MG-42 Machine Gun, Volkswagen Kubelwagen Car and Zundapp Motorcycle.
The main characters resemble the ones from K-ON! just with their ages changed but the faces are almost the same.
The scenes from this anime are modeled from the historic Spanish city of Cuenca.
The legged robotic tanks that the Helvetian Army and the Roman Army are using are both based on World War 2 tanks. The Helvetian Army type are based on the German Panzerkampfwagen Panther Tank by the looks of its back upper hull while the type used by the Roman Army are based on U.S. M3 Lee/Grant tank.
The Roman Army are using U.S. weapons during World War 2, such as the M1 Garand Rifle and the Colt M1911 (Aisha's pistol).
The owl appearing is a Northern white-faced owl. Known for it's appearance as Popo-Chan on Youtube.
In episode 3 Rio played the song "Amazing Grace" which is a popular Christian hymn.
In episode 11, the Roman soldier Aisha, speaks in German.
