Trivia:

A short clip from Galaxy Express 999 was used in the Chris Marker documentary Sans Soleil.

The number 999 comes from the real-life train, Empire State Express No.999, which was the first vehicle on wheels to actually reach a speed over 100km/h.

This series was inspired by Kenji Miyazawa's novel "Night on the Galactic Railroad," which was also about a steam train that has the ability to fly through space.
