When a senile Piringo (played by Tarantino) is told about his son Akira, he suddenly breaks the fourth wall by indirectly referencing the 1988 film Akira and describing himself as an "anime otaku by heart". His wheelchair has a duck hood ornament, which is from his 2007 film Death Proof.
The tombstone cross used to impale the Sheriff bears the name "Mercedes Zaro", which is the same name on the grave marker used in the final scene of the original Django film. Mercedes Zaro is also the name of the original Django's wife.
The rivalry between the Genji and Heike clans is loosely based on the Genpei War (1180-1185), which involved the Minamoto clan (Genji) and the Taira clan (Heike) during the late Heian period.
The Gunman is a mashup of Django from the original Django film, Kuwabatake Sanjuro from Akira Kurosawa's 1961 epic Yojimbo, and the Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood's character) from the Dollars Trilogy (1964-1966).
