The opening theme "Hashire Makibao" is a cover of the 1970 song "Hashire Kotaro" by Salty Sugar, with different lyrics. The song was later covered in 2022 by the Uma Musume Pretty Derby franchise as "Hashire Uma Musume".
Midori Makibao was modeled after the racehorse Tamamo Cross (1984-2003), who won nine out of 18 races from 1987 to 1988, as well as the 1988 Japanese Horse of the Year award.
Cascade was modeled after the racehorse Fuji Kiseki (1992-2015), who was undefeated in four races from 1994 to 1995 before a tendon injury ended his career.
Amago Vaccine was modeled after the racehorse Narita Brian (1991-1998), who won 12 out of 21 races in his career from 1993 to 1996, as well as the 1994 Japanese Horse of the Year award. Narita Brian was also the fifth racehorse to win the Japanese Triple Crown.
