Trivia:

The story is loosely based on the Japanese folk tale "Urashima Taro," which bears similarities to both the legend of Rip Van Winkle and the myth of Pandora. The taxi driver's comments about the "Dragon Palace" and the giant stone turtle beneath the town are both references to this tale.

The movie was drawn and filmed in full frame (4:3) aspect ratio and matted for the widescreen theatrical release. Some of the home video releases were "open matte," displaying the entire original frame, including some animation that was drawn but not expected to be screened in the theater. In one scene this includes visible nipples.
