Plot Summary: A mysterious celestial body, dubbed "Dimon" comes into close orbit around Earth. Rock, the son of Dimon's discoverer, is put in charge of the first Earth expedition to the new planet. They discover two sentient races there, a race of bird people and a second race of metamorphic clay people who are used as slaves by the birds. Rock adopts an injured baby bird person and raises it, learning more about their culture. As humans and the bird people come into conflict, it falls to Rock to act as a cultural ambassador and attempt to prevent war.
