Completing their escape, Lisa, Rick, Max and Ben return to SDF-1 and a hero's welcome. They relate what they have learned of the Zentraedi, and receive promotions. Meanwhile, the alien spies, shrunk down to human size, try and blend in and are amazed by what they observe.

In a daring plan, Captain Gloval pilots the battle fortress back towards Earth. The Zentraedi commander Khyron pursues, and is about to destroy the Micronians, when his superior, Azonia, forbids him to proceed. Gloval has counted on this, and safely pilots SDF-1 back to Earth. After two years in deep space, the Robotech ship is home, and Gloval prepares a full report.

Captain Gloval and Commander Lisa Hayes give their report and try to convince the United Earth Government to negotiate a truce with the Zentraedi. Meanwhile, Rick Hunter and Minmei visit Minmei's parents - who are shocked that they are alive. The government has circulated word that SDF-1, Macorss Island and all its inhabitants have been destroyed by terrorists. Because the government wants to maintain its story - and prevent Earth from learning of the alien attack - it refuses to negotiate with the Zentraedi and won't allow the landing of the 70,000 inhabitants of Macross Island. SDF-1 must return to space, only to face another furious attack from Khyron and his forces.
