U.S. Home Video Sales Dropped 1.8% in 2014

Consumers spent 1.8 percent less on home video sales and rentals in 2014, according to data released by the Digital Entertainment Group this month. Video buyers spent US$17.8 billion on home video or rentals last year. U.S. home video sales have gradually declined over the last two years, dropping 0.2% in 2013 and 0.5% in 2012.
Electronic Sell-Through (EST), like Amazon's Instant Video, continued to rise this year with US$1.55 billion in sales, a 30.4% increase from last year. Subscription streaming (like Netflix) also rose 25.8% percent with US$4.01 billion in sales. DEG credits films like Frozen, Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Lego Movie, Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, and Guardians Of The Galaxy for the increase in EST sales.
Video on Demand services, on the other hand, dropped 6.7% with earnings at US$1.97 billion.
