i know of a few people at my school who are pretty big anime fans as i am. From time to time we do the chance to talk about it but, im not much of a talker anyway, well at least not on anything serious. Besides, most of the time i only get to see these people from time to time throughout the day and its usually in class so our convos are limited

I've got a colleague here in the office who has watched Chobits and some other titles when he was studying in Melbourne, Australia. He does not collect, but will watch whatever is on TV. We don't usually talk about anime, but he has asked for my opinions on some titles once in a while. We're from different departments too so we don't usually get the chance to chit-chat.
My Japanese coleagues, whom I'd expect to be pretty big fans of anime, don't seem to be so. A few have borrowed stuff from me to watch back at their apartments but they don't seem to know a lot about anime in general. Anyway, the youngest among them is about 33 years old, which is not much older than I am so there's not really that big an age gap. However, their seemingly lack of interest in anime is quite shocking to me.

well, first of all, nobody wants to start bragging about their hobby. You don't see tennisplayers going to school in their tenisoutfit,.
And of course, the fear of being the laughing stock of the school. How many people wouldn't make fun of that person and would say that he should stop watching stupid kid stuff and that he should grow up.
Even though the 2nd reason may never happen, a lot of people fear that it might happen and that is why they hide it.
I personnally don't show off with the fact i'm an animefan but if someone asks what my hobbies are i just say anime. But i've noticed that other people seem to have absolutely no clue what i'm talking about so they let it be

I may take some mangas to school quite often, and read them when I got a chance. Still, I'm not bothered about people could think. Most of my classmates aren't really reasonable people, and the other, well it wouldn't be the first time they ask me for lending them some mangas. They're not really anime fans, but they can like it and read it, so I have nothing to hide.
Except by teacher, because they're still senseless, and unless you're reading a book, they'll just blast on what you're doing .
Almost, as someone previously said, it's impossible to talk with some anime fans. Those who just love series like Inuyasha, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist and believe any other stuff it's absolutly insignificant...Bah, I just ignore them.

I don't think I'd throw a fan of Full Metal Alchemist into the same category as fans who have just seen one particular anime (Yet...if that is what you mean) because unless you're country has just recently started airing it on tv, it's more than likely they've discovered the show through fansubs, and therefore know quite a bit of anime.

In that you're right, they have discovered it via fansub. However, most of them have just seen some animes (a few chapters of them), and they completly live for one of two series. After all, don't worry, spanish people is used to download A LOT, so everyone, even if they have just seen it's first anime a few days ago, is able to download a fansub of a serie.
And believe me, it's not grateful to talk with them.

However when I go to something, like say an anime con, I turn bubbly, and open, not to mention hyper. I'd like to blame it on cosplay, but I'm not always cosplaying when I go to cons, and I still act the same. I think it's because after years of not really having anything in common with people in school, I'm suddenly at a place where I know I do.

I know I'm a little like that. I open up at my anime club meetings more than I do anywhere else, and I'm the vice prez there. Normally I'm kind of a reserved person. I'm starting to come out more with my hobby- I read manga whenever I have free time at school, and I'm writing an article about the anime club for the school newspaper (I figure that no one really reads our crappy paper anyway, so I should be safe ) Almost all of my closest friends are into anime. We don't talk about it all the time, but it is a frequent topic of conversation. This is mostly because we lend each other different manga series and always start discussing the latest developments. I do feel sort of guilty for having so many friends connected to my love of anime - am I that obsessed!? But they're really great people who I feel super-comfortable around, and if anime is what holds us together, so be it.
It was a whole different story when I went to a Japanese-language camp this summer, however. As to be expected, there were a lot of anime fans (maybe half of the 30+ attendees), but I just never really jibed with most of them. I would have the occasional anime-conversation with a fan, but they seemed so different than me. They were the outgoing types who just seemed to know so much more than me, and we never had much to talk about (*sigh*) I did make one really nice anime-pal (a very cool friend in general), and she and I are currently lending manga to each other through the mail
Through my camp experience, I discovered the sad truth that just because someone is into anime doesn't mean that we'll automatically become friends It really boils down to whether or not we like the same stuff, as well as the personality compatibility needed for all types of relationships.

I'm very shy and I get pretty nervous when talking to people. I just hope I work up the courage to talk to anime fan iwithin the next two days at a con. Hopefully they won't ignore me because they would think I'm retarted because of my slured speech.
