Fullmetal Alchemist has been remade to fit its manga storyline. Why not Fruits Basket? The manga was significantly better than the anime, which seemed to be cut off too shortly. I think it would be amazing if it was remade like FMA:B and I think it would be hugely popular if a remake was ever distributed.

I actually agree with a remake. The manga is much better with the more mature theme as well as overall storyline and character wise.

They should also do something similar for Gakuen Alice as the manga is significantly better than the anime adaptation imo.

I think it would be good, but it's not going to happen. Fruits Basket was relatively way, way more popular in America than in Japan. It's also been over and done with for nearly 6 years now. If it were going to happen, it would've done by now.

As for Gakuen Alice, I agree, but the manga is still ongoing so I don't want another adaption until the manga is over.

Actually, I think it's a little unfair to blast the anime for immaturity. In fact, it followed the manga rather closely right up until the last episode and a half, which is the only thing that would actually have to be rebooted. It's just that the anime didn't continue and follow the characters as they got a little older.

The ending is the usual problem with anime being created before the manga they're based on ends. The writers had to take their best shot at where the mangaka might be going to wrap it up. Unfortunately, the anime ending was different enough from how things turned out in the manga that they couldn't just pick the story up now even if they wanted to. The handling of Shigure and Akito in particular would be almost impossible to resolve with bringing things back into line with the story as it eventually developed.

The manga would have provided another two seasons of material in my estimation - but it's not going to happen now.

I would also dispute that "the manga was significantly better than the anime" - at least if you're comparing manga chapters that were animated to their animated content, anyway. I read the first few FB tankoubon (I stopped because I eventually got fed up with the artistic deficiencies) and vastly prefer the anime versions of those chapters.

While the main events of the six volumes covered by the manga were adapted for the anime, I wouldn't call it too closely followed. A number of events were changed around, certain character traits (spoiler[Momiji's half-German heritage and Shigure's more sinister side]) were removed, hints alluding to later events in the series or character connections (in particular, spoiler[the red cap boy story with Yuki, Kyo and Tohru]) were removed and several events from the later two volumes were adapted into the anime when they had taken place after the spoiler[Kyo's true form story]. The anime is a decent adaptation I'll admit, but I wouldn't call it a tightly adapted take on the manga.

From what I've heard, Akitaro Daichi and Natsuki Takaya did not get along that well, to put it mildly, and it wouldn't surprise me if Takaya became wary of any further attempts to adapt her work. This is quite a different situation than Fullmetal Alchemist, where the mangaka approved of the changes and wanted the adaptation to be different from the original. Plus, you know, the whole time gap and all.

The brakes seem to be pretty firmly on for any continuation of the existing story (which wouldn't have to be from the same studio or Director - look at FMP) so don't think a remake would be all that likely either unfortunately. FUNimation campaigned hard for a continuation and evidently didn't get very far.
