Sometimes, anime gives logic the finger. Other times, it can be shockingly realistic. What are some examples?
Keitaro and Naru's relationship in Love Hina- Naru is a harlot that abuses him on a regular basis. She's the female Ralph Kramden: she just embodies the domestic abuser in anime. The realistic part is the fact that Keitaro keeps coming back to her, convinced that she's changed, only for the abuse to continue. Unlike most tsunderes, she beats her lover, even at their wedding. There's also the fact that Naru was supposedly based on the writer's wife. That really says a lot about his home life, don't you think? Orihime's trauma in Bleach- Some might like to think of panic attack she had when spoiler[Ulquiorra blew a hole in Ichigo] as the moment that ultimately ruined her character. Let's be logical: who wouldn't panic at seeing the love of their life get impaled? Sure, Orihime has healing powers, but that didn't look very survivable. Any angsty character- Shinji Ikari, Rei Miyamoto, Cloud Strife, and Sasuke Uchiha are known for their 'constant whining' to the fans. Well, they have had rough backstories. Shinji's father abandoned him, killed his mother, and put him in traumatizing situations, Rei lost her boyfriend in a zombie hoard, Cloud's hero burned his hometown down, and Sasuke lost his family. Would anyone be in a positive mood after all of that? Rei gets the worst hate for her angst. Unlike the others, she didn't have time to mentally recover. Yet, everyone just tells the angsters to "stop whining" like losing a loved one happens to them on a daily basis. Naruto wearing orange in Naruto- It's actually more of a theory than a fact. All of the higher ups know Naruto has a demon that can heal him. Maybe, the reason they don't say anything about his wardrobe is to basically use him as a meatshield, knowing that he'll heal later. |

There's a whole genre for this actually. It's called Slice of Life or, alternatively, Drama.

Oh Kruszer, don't be a party pooper.
The scene in Perfect Blue of the fake rape was shockingly realistic, as I'm sure many people will agree. Even though I knew it was just acting it still creeped me out. The realistic violence in Sword of the Stranger is one example of when being realistic helps an Anime. I mean, for all that the fight scenes were incredible, it was really nice to see people have their arms broken and their hamstrings sliced and their throats crushed. Wasn't that for Perfect Blue? A recent example from my anime viewings that really shocked me was Barefoot Gen's realistic and graphic depiction of the Hiroshima nuclear strike from World War II. While I am quite desensitized to graphic content I come across in many anime, seeing the sight of flesh burning off the skin of victims in vicinity of the blast from the nuke and the aftermath where there are many corpses and dying victims badly burnt is still rather chilling for me thanks to the title being based on real-life historical events. |

it's the shocking realism that draws me to many anime's. I get really annoyed with the unrealistic elements of anime sometimes, especially when it comes to relationships.
A recent example would be Dusk Maiden...the scenes where spoiler[they sacrifice her and what she goes through before she dies] were absolutely amazing imho. I loved how they did that. It may have been unrealistic to think someone would do that now-a-days, but that was spoiler[back in the 60s during an epidemic] and it's very possible I think. |

Except when it is. When a warrior slices his opponent's hamstring thereby making them limp, that's realistic. When a girl kisses a guy and he realises that she likes him, that's realistic. When a character does poorly in a test because they didn't study, that's realistic. Realism abounds in Anime, people just choose not to see it. Doesn't mean it isn't there. |

Quoted for truth. Even in the most down to earth shows I can seldom comprehend the motivations of the characters, it's pretty much a torrent of WTF's from start to finish. |

Now I'm trying to find a point to insert a fake rape scene into Millennium Actress. Uh... When she's alone with the dude (the one from the flashbacks) the first time. Or for shock value, when she is with the interviewer. It's been a while since I've seen that movie. Time for a rewatch. |

I get what you mean by shockingly realistic. If K-On! is really the perfect portrayal of a slice-of-life in highschool like all the fans say it is, then it looks like highschool is going to be some of the most boring (and tasty, all that cake and tea man) years of my life.
Please don't take that too seriously. |
