I was at a comic convention today, not usually my thing but I had heard that there would be an anime table there, and I found tons of VHS tapes for really cheap. Then I got to thinking that I'm gonna miss not being able to buy anime on VHS as much now that major companies have stopped to produce it. I'm not saying that I like VHS over DVD, but I do have several series on VHS that are incomplete and will never be complete on VHS now. So I was just wondering how everyone else feels about the disapearance of anime on VHS.
btw, I did manage to pick up Lain, dubbed on VHS, complete for like $12 so I will be watching that later tonite

I love that it's going away. A lot of my anime VHS tapes have been degrading for years now. Before DVD, my only choice was to replace them....now I don't have that problem
 (Well, unless I destroy it on my own...then it's my fault.)

It's a good thing in the sense that I won't have to pay $5-$20 more just to hear my anime in Japanese with subs. (Of course certain companies still charge inflated prices for anime anyway, so unfortunately, that won't change anytime soon.) Of course, you might want to buy certain vhs tapes, seeing as Urban Vision doesn't own the rights to them anymore(see Cobra) and it would encourage them to put the Cockpit on dvd.

For me, I will miss the VHS days. Even though DVDs can stand the test of time, but only you take care of them. I mean, like it was a family jewel. I have people once and a while borrow DVDs and some take care of them, while others treat it like a CD. With VHS, I can toss them around, drop them, leave them setting out with a cover on them, and then put it in the VCR and works just fine. Oh well, DVDs are the way to go now, I guess.

Either one works for me. I usually buy VHS when I see it because I have a VCR in my room, and the DVD player is in the living room, so VHS just makes it more easy to watch. (especially if theres something in the show that is inappropriate for my little brothers, or something my mom wouldn't exactly like for me to see/hear
I'll just buy more of what I want when I move out. |

same here.. my anime vhs collection is being phasing out & replaced by dvds i'd have bought a lot more but some of my fave series still way up there i'm unemployed so money is limited

In the beginning, it was hard for me to move away from VHS. I didn't think that I would ever really get into DVDs. Of course, that all changed for me when I realized (ta-dah/duh) that DVDs are bi-lingual. There are a few series (Iria comes to mind) that I have on VHS but would like to get on DVD.

well, I'm glad i'm not the only one who will miss VHS, never saw anything on beta though. Of course, not all DVDs are bilingual, like CCS and Miyuki-Chan but oh well

I'll miss VHS, but purely for nostalgic reasons. I remember back in the day how I'd buy ever Ranma½ dub tape up to the point where I had every tape through (I think) the fourth series. I looked back and realized, "man, what a waste of space and tapes". 'Cause as you know, it was only two episodes per tape.
I also had a ton of great anime movies (i.e. those damned Streamlines). I'm kinda wondering what I should do with all these tapes now that I'm converting everything to DVD. I remember when I started getting CDs, I tried selling off some of my old cassettes, but they were only worth pocket change. I fear the same would go for my disgustingly large VHS pile. Oh well. I love DVD now... Until the next format comes along, that is. Can't imagine what would replace DVD, but I'm sure some smart guy will think of something. |

Heh. That's what most of my VHS collection is. Ranma 1/2. Those are the tapes that are so horribly degraded because I watched them over and over. |

I now prefer DVD over VHS because a DVD can have music and other stuff. You can also choose what you want to watch with a DVD. Although I still use VHS to auto-record Adult Swim, and that's the only thing I use it for.

Yes, Yuki555, we realize that and that's all well and good. What we're discussing is whether we'll miss the VHS format or not and to reminisce on the past.

Unfortuantely Im old enough that most of my anime is on VHS. And VHS wears out. At least DVD's didn't wear out...until now. A degradeable DVD has been invented that will last about 20 plays. I can just see those being used for media sales so they can force repeat sales. |
