i guess every thursday this month these movies are being showed a couple each wk dubs then subs going late into the night. i prefer the subs
|

Can you provide any examples of how these translations are bad, such as a line in Japanese and its supposedly wrong translation? If not, then those of us who haven't seen it don't have that much of a reason to believe this.

From what I understand, neither Disney nor Studio Ghibli want 100%, strict-to-original phrase english dubs produced, as it ends up sounding arkward. Therefore, the scripts can have their dialouge rewritten, though its all approved by Studio Ghibli.

That would figure if it was poorly translated. I am very disappointed with Spirited Away's dub, and have no desire to see any of the others dubbed. On the bright side, for my memory of Howl's Moving Castle's Japanese version from the camrip I saw nearly a year ago, the dub was quite good.

That might be more based on a cultural thing... it's really nothing to call it bad over. I watched all the subbed ones myself on TMC, I was jsut up then, but I caught the end of Whispers, I thought the dub was good.
But whatever you prefer, don't go around nit-picking if it's not even what you normally watch. |

And do learn to use spoiler tags, blaik2k4 (as well as taking Nagisa's point about cleaning up the grammar), as what you said in your last post would be considered a spoiler for anyone who hasn't had a chance to see the movie yet.

I'd definitely rather have a more natural sounding adaptation than a slavishly-close-to-the-original dub as well. Disney's earlier dubs for Kiki and Castle in the Sky were criticized for extra dialogue and/or music, but even those were approved by Ghibli as well, and I didn't detect anything in the latter that changed the message of the story that dramatically. Especially when the performances of Cloris Leachman and Mark Hamill entertained me. -Jon T. |

I had a chance to watch the dub recently and I must say I am very impressed. I liked all the voices (Brittany Snow and David Gallagher were great as the leads, but Harold Gould was my favorite performer; his Shiho is full of warmth and gentle wisdom), and, based on my glimpses at the subtitles, I think the scriptwriters did a great job of remaining faithful to the original... with a few (very minor) exceptions of course: the first being the issue with the song (translating vs. setting her own lyrics)--I thought that was handled well.
I've heard some folks on the Internet Movie Database forums grouse about the rewriting of Seiji's proposal of marriage to "could you see us getting married in the future"; I don't consider this rewriting blasphemy at all, just merely a way to fit the mouth movements. It still carries the same idea, albeit with different words. It saddens me that there are some people who feel that Disney somehow messed this dub up (one guy in particular said it was one of the worst Ghibli dubs ever); I don't agree with that--I found the Whisper dub captivating from the start and I do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. -Jon T. |

Interesting, I just bought this movie today, and guess I'll have to watch it in both languages.
And btw, to the long-gone OP and anyone else who thinks that something is "badly translated," imo you should be able to prove that point, explicitly and with details, like typing out: Japanese: (kanji/kana or romaji from what you can hear from the audio) English: what you think that the English should be English: the allegedly mistranslated version, so that the two can be compared. Saying, "in Japanese he says this and in English he says this" is not enough. |

Umm, that's not merely rewriting to fit the mouthflaps, TurnerJ. That severely reduces the dramatic impact of the scene. Or to put inside spoiler tags the stuff that nobody who hasn't yet seen the movie would want to see openly revealed: spoiler[It's no longer a surprise marriage proposal, it's merely a confession now]. There's precious little of the whoa-factor left.
