A couple of months ago, I posted up an article about anime I saw on a religious conservative orgainization's website. (see here) Now, I found another one. Take a look and let's discuss.

"I have not seen [My Neighbor Totoro], but from what you said, it sounds like Pokemon, which I stopped letting my children watch because I heard too many Christians say it was full of demons and was a bad influence, in the same way I would not let them play with tarot cards or Ouija boards."
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Wooohh.... I bet this parent wouldn't let their children watch My Neighbor Totoro anyway because of "magical forest creatures" clearly being a form of witchcraft, and clearly that erotic bath scene showing both the main underage girls naked was meant to lure children into being pedophiles. Plus it'll scare children that they'll have to be hospitalized if they get a cold. But, actually, overall I'd say this writer knows what he's talking about. He's not saying "all anime is Pokémon" or "all anime is pornography"; in fact I'd say it's rather balanced. |

Obviously, this person suffers from the same lack of information about slice-of-life / romance / drama / school comedy anime that many others do. I think I'd add, "at least they haven't heard about Chrono Crusade, Utena, Haibane Renmei, Ayashi no Ceres..." and a host of other anime that might not be suitable for good Christian children. Still, it should be possible for people to be entertained by something without being influenced by it...I think I mentioned this in the other thread, but one of my best friends is an ultra-conservative religious type, and he's listed to "satanic" heavy-metal music since high school. |

Indeed, the writer is being pretty reasonable and just pointing out things that parents SHOULD be aware of. There are always some crazed fundies that will ban pokemon or what have you, but the author doesn't seem to fall into that group.

I have to agree with this. The author of the piece, for belonging to such a group, seems to be rather rational rather than some of the wild-eyed, bible-thumping, If-our-kids-watch-this-they'll-become-perverts-and-murderers-and-go-to-hell! articles about anime I've seen. |

So was I to rant for or against?
Not having been involved for long with ANN, it shouldn't come as a surprise that ignorance flows both ways. Ignorance and for anime, and ignorance but against anime. Feel lucky the author of the articles chose to inform the readership that there are some good animes out there, that a family can feel safe taking the kids to the movies, specifically "My Neighbor Totoro." This is why a rating system was invented in the first place wasn't it? To let people who don't want to see certain subjects, be able to avoid them. In the late 70s early 80s it came about that a majority of movies were rated R. They made money, so Hollywood kept on making R movies. Well, some people didn't want so many R movies made, especially as theatres were not keeping underage kids out of them. Luckily a coulpe of movies you may have heard of debuted, "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which proved that money could be made without the R rating. Also America is still somewhat puritanical, even today. Take me for example: there are many subjects I just do not want to see. And there are some that some people would think I am the devil for wanting to see. Basically I go by the plot. Or by a director, and maybe an actor/actress. So far I have been able to gather enough information from ANN to be confident in my viewing choices. If only I could watch 2 or 3 DVDs at the same time. I kind of think that it will take a few ecchi movies, but not hentai, in US theatres to get the idea across that all anime is not all Pokemon, or perverted. But has a vast range of genres. Then maybe we can begin to see more and more anime on screens across America. Dumb question: is the plural of anime, anime, or animes? Yes deer?!? Because Hollywood needs some new material!!!! |

And here Bush's administration gets brownie points for bashing Islamic Fundamentalism...
Ironically, he never uttered a word about Christian Fundamentalism...too many supporters, perhaps? Groups like thse are always worst when it comes to talking rationally. |

He's an author who's touched the iceberg tip of anime, i.e. the mainstream shows and movies, writing for parents who have glanced at (while some have maybe touched it with their pinky toe) the same tip. I think it's best to understand his audience when writing the article--the people who are meant to read it are least likely to be avid anime-watchers.
Kids get influenced very easily, though, which is the main point for parents' fears. And there is music that influences someone emotionally (though some people don't get affected, others do, and then still others don't admit they do). As for the parent, it's easier to say no "satan music" than it is to say "no ICP, no Madonna, no Nine Inch Nails, etc." Just think of the current rap and RnB--all you have to do is take a look at the videos to understand what type of influence they are trying to portray about materialism, women, etc.
He obviously had some confrontive responses on his idea that Totoro was good for the family; so, I think he balanced it pretty well, keeping to a delicate approach to explaining "anime" to parents. His basic theme is for parents to understand that just because it is cartoon now does not mean it is appropriate for their kids; thus busting a huge myth that is culturally lowered as "anime" rises. |

I think that the author of the site is just saying that parents should restrict what there children watch, but to all the religous fanatics out there, there is a diffrence- a big diffrence between anime and henati. People who talk about anime as being porno or has satans creatures in it are extreamly narrow minded and should try to understand the story behind the anime they criticize.

I am somewhat surprised that this and your previous post didn't get locked by the moderators, Ferrariman f355. What are you trying to accomplish? To find out how many anime fans are anti, pro and religiously neutral? And how far they go that way? Or are you looking for ways to combat ignorance, and increase the love for anime? What do you want?
So far your only part in these discussions is your originating posts. And I think that just stinks. |

Well I hope everyone will change their personal beliefs to agree with your own.
Honestly, who cares? You want to bash people because they don't have the same view as you? No, I hope not, because that's pretty hypocritical. So yeah, here we go, another round of debates. |

Then again there are many anime such as Ikki Tousen and Elfen Lied, where the boundries are really loose... You don't see nipples in anime (Elfen Lied), nor do you usually find a guy char going down on a female char (Ikki Tousen)... Unless it is one of those Avant-guard flicks... But back to the main point... I agree with most of what is said here, these people have only had there first taste of anime, and are drawing conclusions based on their own prejudice and conditioned thoughts. If I were to make an example, the first time tried drinking beer, it was gross, but after I tried around and found some good ones and am now happy. It is true with music, food, and anime. Why can people not open up their minds!?! Khrim |

I'll have to agree. He wasn't calling all anime satan, and if I had young kids, I wouldn't let them watch some that are in my own collection. He did a good job in writing this, I respect that.
What made me bow and nod my head in disgust was the same thing you quoted. I both love and hate how that person worded it; "I stopped letting my children watch because I heard too many Christians say it was..." Because too many christians SAID it was? But what about what YOU say? What do YOU think about it? I was raised in church and people like this are one of the biggest reasons I left. Classic example of not thinking for oneself. People that are this easily influenced are the people who shouldn't watch anime... or tv, or listen to secular music, or anything that is outside of their religious shelter. Sad really. |
