I have terrible luck with gashapon. Every single time I buy something in a vending machine or in a box, I end up getting the one I want the least...twice in a row. So I'm wondering: Is my luck really this bad or is there some kind of marketing ploy behind the whole gashapon business? Like say they produce one more than the other (if there's say 5 possible figurines, they're produced at a 3:1:1:1:1 ratio rather than a 1:1 ratio). And on top of that, they produce the one people will probably dislike more than the rest so that you keep buying them until you get the "more rare" figurine even though in your mind it should be a 1/5 equal chance.
Anyone actually have good luck (or equal rate) with gashapon if you ever buy them? Considering the customer is lacking the knowledge of exactly what his purchase is going to be (blind purchase), I can imagine a pretty easy way to pull the money strings. Seriously though, I wanted the Archer figurine the least because the face is kinda odd (not...Archer) and ended up getting 2/3 of them. Also, I wanted an Ichigo or Rukia keychain and ended up getting Sado-Kun twice in a row. Did I just crack the business or do I just have bad luck and should keep at it? |

If ever I've bought gashapon I've never really cared what I got because it's part of a series I like so that doesn't matter. What matters to me is when I get the same thing and I know that I can't refund it, so the best thing I can hope for is to find somebody who either has another kind from that series or they trade me for something else I might want.

I don't know about gashapon specifically, but I have terrible luck picking trading figure boxes- all doubles of icky characters, just like you. On the flip side, my boyfriend's luck is amazing, so I recuit him to pick my boxes. He managed to get all of the FMA trading arts 1 and 2, sans secret figures, without hitting a double.
Of course, now we've hit a wall on the secret figures... I'd kill to get the color version of the one from set 2 (Ed, Al, Winry as kids.) .... anybody got this one and need someone dead?

I'm not a big fan of the small gashapon figures, I prefer larger statues. But I have a few Evangelion gashapons and one Cowboy Bebop Faye Valentine. I prefer to buy them from online stores or even ask my friend to buy from ebay, but preferable opened boxes, to see what I get inside.

For some reason I usually have good luck with gashapon. Last time I was in Japan usually I got the one I wanted either on the first or second try. I was able to get a full set of Mai Otome Vol. 1 & 2 trading figures and only got about 2 or 3 doubles, which I thought was pretty good.
But trading figure boxes are different. I usually never get the one I want and often get multiples of the ones I don't want... |

I seem to have good luck with Gashapon and trading figures. In fact just recently at ANime Expo, I managed to get 4 different Negima figures without duplicates. And then for the Tsubasa figure I purchased I managed to score the special figure of the Dimentional Witch from xxxholic. Unfortunatly there's no method I can recommend, it seems to be just plain dumb luck. However you can always do the ebay thing and buy figures individual or as complete sets (althought it can be more pricey). So there is hope!
