So, after finishing the Moe Tournament, I'm thinking about doing another tournament (hopefully with more help this time and more people participating). I've came up with a few ideas and the one I have been leaning toward the most would be a seiyuu (voice actor) tournament.

Just for reference, the only suggestions I'm not really looking for are a "who is stronger?' character tournament or a "favorite" character tournament. I've just seen too many of them... I want to do something a bit different so I'm open to any other suggestions other than them. Smile

Hmmm...a certain fansub group, who have brought us such anime as Bleach, Aishiteru ze Baby, Suzuka, Canvas 2, and many more, has a Tsundere Tournament running. It's quite elaborate, as each vote in a 2-girl faceoff has to explain why their pick is a great tsundere girl, with supporting evidence and everything (votes without sufficient explanation are DQed). That's one idea, anyway.
P.S. -- tsundere would be a good word to add to ANN's Lexicon...

If you were to run one you'd have to make it accessible if you want a higher activity for it. The Moe tournament seemed to suffer due to the limited amount of people who actually knew what moe was or how to take part. I thikn a Seiyuu would suffer from an even lower turnout, I for one can't name a sinlge VA/Seiyuu ff the top of my head and have no idea which ones have appeared in more than one anime I have seen. If I had to go and research this kind of info for every single vote and potentially have no way of hearing the Seiyuu in more than one if any roles then I'd not really bother. I doubt I'm alone in this sentiment.

It's in the queue, but writing a good definition (not my job heehee) might not be easy.

Agreed. For the majority of North American anime fans, recognizing characters by (Japanese) voices is "Mission: Impossible." Only the most hardcore seiyuu fans can identify them with voices alone. Another potential problem is that we can't put voice samples at ANN without getting us enough trouble (space, bandwidth, copyright, etc) first.

However, I'm surprised that you couldn't even name Akeno Watanabe for the sake of your avatar. Her voice is not very hard to be singled out.

Probably not but unless she did the English VA's role then I've yet to hear her...Usually if the English dub is good then I wont even give the japanese one a look in. Only if the English track is awful will I bother switching.

Well I read up seyuu regularly here in the Encyclopedia and I do have my favorites (actually working on a Kikuko Inoue list for my public list... I really need less free time Rolling Eyes), but judging from my voice actor topic, which died off rather quickly, I don't think a seyuu tournament would be too popular.

I didn't participate in the Moe tournament but I liked going through the thread, I hope you can come up with a new one.

ETA: I don't know how it would work but how about an OST tournament, or just favorite/best anime song.

That's Kappei Yamaguchi, a favorite of mine too, loved his work as Ranma.

What about the craziest anime character ever?
I know I know, not very creative but there are a lot of characters up for the title. From old to new titles, there always has been one whack-job just waiting to steal the hearts of anime fans worldwide.

How about a 'Nice Guy' theme?

I've been thinking and saying most attractive/best fighter/smartest/etc would be somewhat pointless and would cut out a vast amount of shows and characters. A good thing with the Moe tourney was that a large amount of anime have Moe characters even if other things are the focus the winner for example (Nana) was from an anime in which shock horror, violence and gore were the focus.

If instead we go for 'Character you would most like to marry/date/befriend/hang out with/etc' we can use pretty much anyone, male or female, from almost any genre of anime. Further it lends itself to decent discussion about the pros and cons of a character as a person as opposed to focusing on a sinlge aspect of a character which may or may not be equatable to another character.

It also has the bonus of requiring no special information which a seiyuu/artist/director/tech merits/etc tourney would and no requirements for knowing and understanding a Japanese concept like Moe(which has lots of different aspects anyway).

How about, instead of deciding the moe'est anime character, we have a tourniment of the worse/most perverted/ most annoying etc anime characters???

Thats my suggestion.

Guys, a tournament differs from a simple poll by having contestants competing against each other, rather than just sitting there. Of course, anime characters can't "compete" by themselves, so supporters need to give as many reasons as possible, mobilizing hidden ("submarine") supporters, introduce the character to neutrals, and even convert rival's supporters into theirs.

It's all about passion and LOVE.

If we vote for some detestable characters, no one would be happy when one "wins" over the other.

I see you point dormcat.

Well then stuff my old suggestion.

How about the Smartest Anime character. Im sure every anime series, there has to be a smart, intellegent character that usually instigates comedy or drama to the plot.

OR

The strongest warrior. In every action, drama anime, theres gotta be a warrior, that has special abilities, has heaps of courage and bravory, or have had a hard life. we should nominate the strongest(not in abilities, but as well as courage, determination etc.) anime character.

But i know these suggestions wont even pass the '1st round of deciding' because these are pretty common tourinments.

Hmm.. I know I already took a turn but just thought of something else. How about 'best leading character'? Every series has the star of the show.

There can even be a qualifying tournament for shows that have 2 or 3 characters as the lead. Like for Samurai Champloo you can start with a Fuu vs Jin vs Mugen qualifyer; who was more important to the main plot? Who was the most interesting? And so forth. After that then its time for the winners from the qualifyers to enter the regular tournament against the other clear leading characters from other series.

You can even start it out by seperating the characters into the first brackets by groups based on genre. For instance, the winner from the Samurai Champloo qualifyer vs Kenshin for adventure/shounen, Haruhi Suzumiya vs Excel for comedy(sorry I know this doesn't fit but I don't know what to classify SHnY as), Alucard vs Miyu for horror/mystery/supernatural, Sousuke from FMP vs Shinji from NGE for mecha, Keiichi vs Keitaro for romance/harem, etc.

I wasn't able to participate in last year's tournament, but looking at the organization and execution, it is really quite inspiring. Although I have no creativity and therefore have no ideas, I would like to see a new tournament asap. Should you choose another character genre?
