I'm not too big of an anime fan; manga is really my preferred cup of tea, though I sometimes entertain the animation equivalents of my favourite manga when there's either critical acclaim or something I am interested in (such as hearing a certain character's vocals).

The One Piece movies have gained a notoriously bad reputation for possessing a diverse number of poor qualities, with a lesser or equal number of good qualities. As such, I had, until today, avoided all of them; however, the enormus number of positive appraisals for movie #6 compelled me to the point of watching it.

I must say, I'm in a state of shock. While the character designs, colour palletes, and 3D animation were all disgustingly bad (pretty fair animation, though), the storyline was unbelievable. Obviously, this sort of plotline has been previously pasted onto the big screen by previous directors (spoiler[Shin Angyo Onshi comes to mind]), but I was not expecting such a story in a One Piece movie. The overall tone of this film was darker and less comedic that the series and its theatric predecessors (and successor); much of the silliness that defines One Piece had drained before the film was even half over!

Additionally, this is the first graphical representation of One Piece in which I actually could not forsee the outcome of the movie; I've never even imagined the great and glorious Straw Hat Pirates in such a pitiful situation, let alone how miserable Luffy himself was. Ultimately, the real hero of the movie was not the headstrong would-be Pirate King, but that surviving captain with a moustache who had faith in him.

In closing, I'm not sure what to make of this movie. I dove in expecting a thrilling cartoony swashbuckler and ended up getting fed a serious film that taught me a moral about the strength (and pains) of friendship. As a film adaption of a slapstick series about pirates, movie #6 just seems out of place, like a Ghibli film in ambition...but at the same time, it doesn't belong in the rankings of animated cinematic classics.

I guess my overall assessment could be summed up in twelve words; This is the most profoundly emotional children's film I have ever seen.

Score:

Plot: 10/10
Characters: 8/10
Music: 8/10
Voices: 10/10
Animation: 8/10
Tilt: 8/10

Overall: 8.7/10

I've always found the One Piece movies to be entertaining, but the 6th film is definately my favourite. Everything about the movie was different from the anime TV series. I love watching unconventional animation styles (like Noein, Dead Leaves), so the odd character designs of the 6th One Piece movie instantly appealed to me. What really struck me was the how insanely dark the movie was. I remember towards the end spoiler[the flower on the Captain's shoulder mutated into a hideous monster]... very very freaky. I'd definately not show this to young kids. Even though there has always been some internal conflict between the Straw-Hat Pirates crew members, this movie makes it much more sinister and quite disturbing. I'm looking foward to seeing the new 7th movie, hopefully it's similar to the 6th.

It may very well have been the extremely dark tone, or the animation style (I abhor this style of animation), but I didn't enjoy One Piece 6 very much at all. It's the only One Piece movie I had to take a break on before finishing.

I can agree on most points, especially when it comes to the pitiful position of the Straw Hats, their internal conflict, and Luffy in such a state as he was in. I think if I had expected something darker and out of the ordinary for One Piece, I might have enjoyed it more than I did, but as it stands, it's among my least favorite One Piece films. Perhaps if I ever get around to rewatching it, I may see it in a more favorable light.

And Kidder, don't expect 7 to be like 6 at all. The seventh film is far more lighthearted in its darkest moments than the sixth was in its lightest.

That would be a bad idea. Stop having bad ideas.

Agreed; I can't bear the thought of having my glorious and distinctive name, let alone my insightful prose, juxtaposed next to compositions from either of those amateurs.

I've only seen the 4th and 6th. 4th was kinda cool but 6 was amazing. I loved both the animation and character designs(I love the hoodie rendition of Luffy's vest)!! It was really interesting to see the gang in such a hopeless, dark situation that we would otherwise never see them in and to see them getting into serious arguements with each other.
And despite that, there was still the usual OP silliness(The boat race was great!)

Was the 4th movie the one with the big race? If it was, then that was also one of my favourites too.

I think the main reason why I liked the 6th so much was because the focus was mostly on the Straw-Hat crew trying to save themselves as opposed to helping someone else. Things were pretty grim and kept going downhill for Luffy and his nakama right up until the end. As I said before, I would not show the 6th movie to any young kids, it's pretty disturbing and even I was genuinely freaked out. You could say it's a more "realistic" look at the One Piece universe, it's not all sunshine and happiness.
