I've seen both the full box set and the 2dvd set on ebay and was wondering if anyone knew the difference. The box set has 4 dvds and costs around $120 and the 2 dvd set costs like $30. Confused

The difference is one is real and the other is a bootleg. Read this thread on how to spot them.

4 DVDs = Real

2 DVDs = Bootleg

Don't buy the 2-DVD set, it's a false, a bootleg.

But if you are going to buy the 4-DVD boxed set for 120$, you're going to get ripped off. I bought it for about 75$ IIRC, and it wasn't even an internet store (local shops are usually more expensive).

try looking here, that's the real ones and with a reasonable price:

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=PIO012623

hope that helps

PS: Haibane-Renmei is an awesome series, and it's really worth buying it IMHO. Supporting the creators of awesome works such as this one is the best way to promote good and artful anime.

Yes, the 2 disc set is a bootleg, no doubt. The 4 disc set is the real version, and while it is somewhat expensive it is well worth it. The box it comes in looks great, I even managed to get the wraparound picture on it as a desktop wallpaper, and the series itself is worth twice the price in my opinoin. epixeltwin is right though, $120 is way too high, I paid around $65 for mine from TFAW.

Aside from being a nefarious evil bootleg, the 2 DVD set looks bad on the video front, especially on the second disk which has 9 episodes on it Rolling Eyes It was the last bootleg I ever bought, and I picked up the real set for $90 at a con last fall. It felt worth it. Aside from the DVD extras, there's a really neat mini-booklet which they were nice enough to include with the re-release set. I still even sort of want the initial artbox, so I might grab that used somewhere.

Followup on epixeltwin's P.S.: If you want to support the creators of this series in particular, pick up NieA_7 (Niea under seven), Serial Experiments Lain, and Texhnolyze, all of which can be found at various prices in convenient boxed sets. Complete your Yoshitoshi ABe collection today Exclamation

Absolutely, I'm with Zalis116 - pick up all of ABe's stuff, it really is quite different from most of the standard fare in the anime industry.

Also I'm not too sure how Haibane Renmei was released in the U.S., but here in Australia the first release of the artbox was actually clad in higher quality textured paper, very similar to the special paper that booklets are printed in for many Japanese CDs which anyone who imports them will be familiar with. The rerelease of the box had the same simple design on the artbox, but was plain gloss paper. If you're a bit of a collection/special edition freak, it might be worth tracking down a special paper box... I know I know, totally cosmetic, but for geeks still very special. As for the value of Haibane Renmei, I'd honestly pay any asking price, but then again I collected it from the very 1st disc and artbox, then bought the others at full retail on the day of their release here in Australia.

I picked up my set for $50 a while ago at DeepDiscountDVD.com after having seen the series in my college's anime club. I'll agree the artwork on the box is very nice looking and the show itself was probabally the most unique I'd seen aside from the guy's other works .Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze. I'd definitely recomend the real version over the crumby bootleg.

Just went to the site you gave and the price is still about the same. I might pick it up online at some point. Cool

Well just to let you know, I do think it is a great series, but it's definately not for everyone. Hopefully you like it, but a lot of people recommended Serial Experiments Lain, but I can't even get past the 2nd episode without falling asleep.

Texhnolyze and Haibane Renmei I loved, Lain I haven't been able to get through it, I wish I could atleast check out Niea_7 for cheap to see if I might want the rest.

Serial Experiments is, like, forked up. NieA_7 looks quite nice, I was planning to pick that up.

As for Texhnolyze...IT LOOKS SCARY. Looks like anime on acid after your girlfriend dumped you and your best friend got cancer.

The original US artbox release looked like a wooden box, but it might have been sculpted paper. I really kind of regret not picking it up.

I really like NieA_7. If I were going to talk about my favorite anime, I'd start with NieA and Macross Plus, and then I'd have to start thinking a little. I don't think it's for everybody: the animation's not the best, and some of the themes are "mature" in that I think adults would relate to them more strongly. Not unlike Haibane, come to think of it. But for me at least, it's a really good series.

I think Lain and TEXHNOLYZE have a lot more Konaka in them than they have ABe, excepting the character designs of course.

Yes. It's definitely a popular box although to be honest I like the full series releases box more mainly because it has one of the best pieces of artwork associated with the series wrapped around it. Although the original release does have a very nice antiquated classic look to it, they're both some of the better looking art boxes out there if you ask me, regardless of which I prefer.
