I might just give up and buy GitS Stand Alone Complex digitally.

Bandai Visual is never gonna release the Blu-Rays for SAC and 1.0 outside Japan for non-insane prices are they. Does Funimation's acquisition of Arise offer any hope it might grab the previous stuff for Blu-Ray?

More and more I'm thinking of just getting the only HD version of SAC legally available outside Japan -- digital. To anyone whose bought HD anime digitally, what's the best place to get it in terms of DRM (read: least bad)? Is the image quality much better than the original DVDs? Currently I'm deciding between iTunes and Amazon Instant Video. Does Amazon even let you download or is it streaming-only when you buy something?

If I recall correctly the TV anime was HD native so yeah the BDs will look a lot better. I plan on getting the cour sets someday. Maybe they will be given a 50% discount on Amazon JP if they stay in stock long enough.

Well, as HD native as it can be for a show from 2002. I have the first season on blu-ray, and while it looks night and day compared to those edge enhanced to death DVDs, it's not as sharp as pretty much any other series animated in actual HD.

The pictures tell the story. Basically, one person saying "look, I got SAC for a fraction of the price from Amazon UK" and someone else producing step-by-step instructions on how to order it....

The last time I looked at GITS:SAC on iTunes, which was a while ago, they were still the SD edition. Glad to see that the HD edition is now available.

There is a reason the licensor is being fussy about this title in particular:

Still, I mean wasn't the first set of Japan BDs released like in 2009? Four years ago going on five and for basically a 10 year old show. <sigh> Who's idea was it for NA to be in the same BD region code as Japan. Sad

I assure you, being in a different BD region code isn't a great help. The last time Manga brought up SAC BDs they were suggesting four sets at £34.99 each. Back in 2010 they best they could do was £19.99 per disc for four episodes so there is improvement...
