Ok, this question sounds kind of rediculouse and weird, but what are your thoughts on detective Conan? in my opinion,I think it's the most underated unappriated show here in America, sure it was pretty hot and a large tycoon in japan, but it did absolutely horrible here in America, because all most people care for is mindless fighting/Action,why do you think Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo is still getting large hyped ratings on Toonami? Because of Detective Conan's unique plot which makes you think and for the fact it's animation looks cartoonish, most people were just turned off this anime period which is why it did so bad in adult swim ratings.

in my opinion, Detective conan is a unique show which the mysteries keep you guessing who the criminal is and you would never expect to find out who did the crime, and every episode was fresh and new. Very Happy

what do you guys think?

I guess I agree with you there for the most part (I don't believe in overration) but it IS a little underrated, but that's because all the mainstreamers don't really give it a try, however I learn that most anime fans that watch anything (most people on here) really like the show, and I said somewhee else that it's a show that's fun to watch with others and see who can figure out the case. It's a little under the radar but it should be brought back, and Bobobo barely has any fighting in it, so that can't be the reason.

Hmm, I did watch Case Closed sure, or whatever the name of the show is with Detective Conan in it. I have to agree. That show was actually pretty underrated here in America. As you said, this wasn't a fighting show that got your blood pumping like DBZ, this was more of a show that made you think and guess on who the villian is. The plot was amazingly original, mainly because it didn't have anything to do with saving the world or something.

It was a realistic anime. However, that obviously isn't really on the agenda for American watchers as I believe that most will be tuned on more on fighting shows than on shows such as these. I could be wrong and the show just failed for an unknown reason, though. That's just my guess.

I agree that Case Closed is underrated here which is sad since it is such a great series. I love the idea of the story and it is fun to try and solve it before Conan. I think if it was promoted better here it could do better. Maybe if it was on Toonami it would have gotten more viewers. Another problem could have been when people saw how long it was and realized there were only 3 episodes on a DVD, and well you do the math. Also people probably were turned off when they saw it stared a kid and people thought it would probably be stupid and here in the US most people will not take a cartoon seriously.

exactly my point, why else would Toonami keep replaying DBZ over and over, despite the fact the fad died ages ago(which won't save Toonami's downfall dued to Naruto being the new hyped fad), and Yes, I agree, Detective Conan has a far more realistic plot (besides Jimmy Kudo getting drugged and shrunk into a kid named Conan Edagawa).

although it does'nt really have any blood violence and people do die,Yes, it would be good for toonami to give it a PG rating, only problem is, it's now on the Funimation channel like YuYu Hakusho, which explaines why YYH will never return to Cartoon Network again.

Indeed Detective Conan is underated but kids these days prefer all the action, super power stuff, and shimigamis. When it comes to anime that makes you think, no kid will probably want to watch it. I started watching Case Closed about 2 years ago when they showed in on Bionix but then got replaced with like some Alien show that I really despise because of its awful character designs and plot. But after a long time watching over like 400 episodes of the show it gets really tiring. There's another show kinda like Case Closed but with more modern character designs. It's called Spiral, sure it isn't good as Conan but I think it's worth watching.

From what I've heard, the sales haven't been exactly great, but they've been good enough. I think the second movie's supposed to be coming out before the end of the year, but I could be wrong. It is supposed to be coming out though. Haven't heard about more of the regular series, but I think there's a good chance for at least a few more sets worth.

Not like my poor Kodocha, which is unlikely to see it's second half released anytime soon. Anime cry

I agree that Conan is underrated, but I think part of the problem is that it's technically too mature for kids here and it's too light for some adults. There's nothing wrong with loving the shounen superpower fighting series, but I do wish more people would take a chance on other types of anime.

Yeah, if we're going to talk about underrated and underappreciated titles then there are plenty of other good series that never even achieved the level of moderate respect that Case Closed managed to earn. I'll probably use TRSI's Funi sale to pick up Kodocha volumes 7-9. Anybody else picking it up?

You seem to have a pretty good read on Conan's stateside reception, and I certainly agree with your position on the narrow and finicky interests of American anime fans. I never used to watch anything but blood and guts. Then over time people convinced me to check out all sorts of other titles. Eventually I became a fan of several types of shows and it's given me a lot more to watch and enjoy as a result.

Now that we can all read what you are trying to say, I believe that underrated and underviewed are different things. Most people who watch it are going to realize that it is a decent show, but because of the animation style and storyline used, many people arent going to give it a chance.

Thanks, I take that as a compliment.

It always makes me a little sad that some people will never get to enjoy some of the series I've watched because they lack action. Yeah, a slice of life comedy like Azumanga Daioh isn't going to feature any world-shattering battles, and Detective Conan won't be turning into a Barbarian any time soon, but at least give them a chance. That's all I ask.

I actually think kids here would like Case Closed if the FCC and idiot parents would let them watch it. Kids love watching other kids show-up adults.

Already picked up the Kodocha discs as they came out, just waiting on the 13th final volume on pre-order. I'm willing to watch most types of anime, but after seeing a few episodes of Detective Conan a few years ago, it didn't really draw me in. The central "hook" felt hokey, and when I learned that it had hundreds of episodes, I just didn't have any motivation to get into it. I just don't like mega-long series in general, which is why I don't care to watch One Piece, the DragonBall trilogy, Ranma, Inuyasha, or other series of similar length, aside from Sailor Moon, Naruto, and Bleach. DC doesn't seem like a bad series; it just doesn't appeal enough to me to invest that much money and time into it.

I'm a fairly new Kodocha fan but I did just order everything available in the Funi sale. When I ordered it I just assumed the 14th volume would be out in August sometime and when I tried to search for news is when I found out the second series is "up in the air." Anime cry I hope more people are discovering this series late, like I did, and sales pick up for that decision to fall in the favorable column.

As far as Case Closed, I saw a few episodes here and there but since I've been ordering anime at a rate that I can't keep up with I pretty much stopped watching anything on TV, but I used to enjoy the occasional episode I would catch. However it is not something I would really go out of my way for. As for it being under or over rated, well my policy always stands on each series being rated exactly where it should be. People enjoy it, "great!" people don't enjoy it, "great!" I feel like it is just a matter of each show falling in the hands of the correct audience.

Like going back to Kodocha for instance, I love random humor, and I love when a comedy can be multi-dimensional enough to occasionally produce believable drama to round it out just a tad. So the show fits me perfectly. I just hadn't really thought about it too much and when I finally sat down to watch a few episodes back to back it hooked me in just as a show like this is bound to do. It is not for everybody but it fits me great, so good show finds itself in the hands of a good audience for it. I know I tend to oversimplify things but that's how I see it.

The problem with Case Closed is that it's a very good show, but I'm not sure it has a lot of replay value, seeing as you can only see the solution to a mystery once and be surprised (I suppose you could wait a long while before rewatching it and you might forget some of the outcomes). Without the show having replay value, it's hard for me to justify buying the DVDs,

And with it no longer on TV (right? at least with new episodes?) I have no way to get my Conan fix. Maybe at some point I'll start putting the DVDs into a rental queue with some place like NetFlix. That's probably the ideal solution.

It has to be acknowledged that you have to "get past" the artwork to enjoy the show for what it is. If it looked like "Sherlock Holmes, Animated" then it quite likely would have done better. You also have to "get past" the opening episode, which contains the incredibly improbable and yet crucial plot point that Conan is a teen who got "shrunk" back to his childhood body, as opposed to being some supergenius kid who actually knows enough to solve mysteries, which would also be highly improbable.

As someone else said, the show is quite realistic aside from that part, but since it's in the first episode it leads you to wonder what kind of crazy mysteries and solutions the show's gonna have in the future. Think about it: realism is one of the most important elements in a mystery story. So if people see something fantastical (even if it's an isolated incident) it could turn them off. So Conan ends up in no-man's land, looking like a kid's show but really something that could be getting watched by grown-ups.

I remember in that video posted on ANN of the Funi rep at Anime Boston talked about Case Closed but it wasn't really clear. He just said the dvd's are selling ok and they want to continue. Everything else was TBA , but he also mentioned Funi is sorry for changing the dvd format from singles to box set. if they do realese more new episodes they should be in those 2 disc box sets like they are now.

I first saw Kodocha a few months ago on the Funi channel and loved it. I loved how the show was funny and serious at the same time and not to mentioned I have never seen such good character development. The Funi rep at Anime Boston did say the DVD's were selling some what good like the Case Closed ones and said maybe if more dvd's are bought the second series will come out. I plan on buying the first box set when I get a chance too.

Thats why people shouldn't fan sub the show lol. Also though in Japan people already know what happens to since they read it in the manga, but your right about waiting awhile to watch again. I have been doing that with the ones on the Funi channel and my dvd's and I either forgot who did it or remember but just forgot how they did it.
