009-1 (TV)
Aeon Flux (U.S. TV) Very good Been a long time, but I remember being messed up by this when I was a kid and it was on Liquid TV (the legendary MTV block, from when MTV was actually cool). Good times, good times.
Ah! My Goddess (TV) Good Still forming an opinion after two volumes. Hoping it's not incessantly treacly and actually goes somewhere. Buying this was a real leap of faith for me. I'm normally not into this kind of show, but I thought I'd try to expand my horizons.
Astro Boy (TV 1/1963)
Astro Boy (TV 3/2003)
Bleach (TV)
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo (TV) Decent Insane. Sometimes annoying. Always creative. I do admire creativity.
Case Closed (TV) Very good I could kill someone at CN for taking this off (and come up with a diabolical way to cover it up that only Conan could expose); I suppose the ratings weren't there to keep buying new ep.s, though. Too bad. Would like to see the rest of this show some day.
Figure 17 (TV) Decent Picked up vol. 1 on a whim. I do appreciate the whole story-about-a-young-girl angle that turns some people off when they realize this isn't a flat-out action series, but I wasn't sufficiently motivated to pick up the remaining volumes. Maybe some day.
(The) Fuccons (live-action TV) Good Funny-ha ha, or funny-peculiar? I can never decide.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV)
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV)
Gatchaman (TV)
Genshiken (TV)
Gigantor (TV 1963) Good GI-GAN-TORR! GI-GAN-TORRR! GI-GAAAAAAANNNN-TOOORRRRRRRR!
Gurren Lagann (TV)
Heat Guy J (TV)
Kekko Kamen (OAV)
Lupin the 3rd (TV) Good One of those must-see anime. I really must-see more of it some time. Cheesy? Yes. But somehow cool anyway.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season (TV)
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV)
(The) Mysterious Cities of Gold (TV 1)
Naruto (TV) Very good Definitely enjoying this one. Looks like I'm getting sucked into another unending shonen series. You might think I'm being hypocritical in liking this after what I said about Inu Yasha, but the difference is that this show isn't about the characters trying to do one particular thing and never getting it done; it's simply about the development of these ninja over the years. This sort of story, I can enjoy (see DBZ). Favorite episode so far: a tie between the one where Rock Lee has the upper hand fighting Gaara, and the Shikamaru vs. Temari episode. That was a surprisingly cool episode!
Ninja Nonsense (TV)
Odin - Starlight Mutiny (movie)
One Piece (TV 1999) Not really good I want to emphasize that my score is for the English dub. I can't speak as to the original show, pre-4Kids-mangling, so sadly this is all I have to go on, and all I can say is that the dub gives me a headache.
(The) Prince of Tennis (TV)
Pumpkin Scissors (TV)
Saint Seiya (TV)
Samurai 7 (TV)
Shadow Skill (OAV)
Shin chan (TV) Good Lovably bawdy. Not a phrase I use very often. I certainly don't care for shows like South Park, but I consider this as somehow more respectable.
Speed Racer (TV) Decent Did you ever notice that the kid who races is actually *named* Speed? What are the odds?!
Star Blazers (TV) Good I watched some of this with a friend. He bought it for nostalgic reasons, but pretty soon we found ourselves getting hilarious. It's the most unintentionally funny anime I've ever seen. Literally, it's possibly worth buying just because it's so funny -- both the dub and the original show in tandem are just a sublime combination. Which way will the Captain's Chair go next?
Steamboy (movie)
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (TV)
Transformers: Animated (U.S. TV)
Transformers: Armada (TV) So-so As a child of the '80s, I lived and breathed Transformers without ever knowing of its Nipponese origins. Sadly, this show does not hold up 15 years later. Granted, this is not the original, but still, it's talking robots shooting at each other with no real drama involved because no one ever seems to actually get damaged..
Utawarerumono (TV)
Voltron (TV) Good Wow, they don't make dubs like this anymore. Still not as funny as Star Blazers though.
Wandaba Style (TV)

Akira (movie) Bad I don't get it.
Android Kikaider - The Animation (TV)
(The) Animatrix (OAV) Masterpiece
Appleseed (OAV)
Banner of the Stars (TV) Awful (dub), So-so (sub) Even though I enjoyed .hack//PEOPLE_TALKING_TO_EACH_OTHER, I found this show mildly boring for some reason.
Banner of the Stars II (TV) Awful (dub), So-so (sub) I found this season even more boring. In fact, it depressed me; but that was probably because it opened with a main character seeming to die and I was just getting over someone's death. All in all, probably not the best time in my life to be judging things unemotionally.
Batman: Gotham Knight (movie)
(The) Big O (TV) Very good
Black Jack The Movie
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV) Very good Rock on. I still love Toonami for showing this.
Castle in the Sky (movie) Very good A fine adventure film. Nothing negative to say about it. Fly, castle, fly, into the depths of space!
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV)
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Very good Stylish art? Check. Hip soundtrack? Check. Entertaining, in ways both funny and dramatic? Yes. If I have any reservation about this show, it's that fatalistic philosophy that Spike espouses and that the plot seems to support the reality of. I'm talking about the whole fate angle, of course. Don't really agree with that. Nevertheless, a fantastically-made show.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Crest of the Stars (TV) Awful (dub), Good (sub) Even if you never watch the sequel Banner of the Stars series, this is worth seeing. You feel connected to the characters in a way that is somewhat lost in the BotS follow-ups.
Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier (TV) Good I really dug this, retro style and all. Pretty silly, but that's part of the retro way. There's some good drama and likeable characters here.
Dai-Guard (TV) Good This is a nice, PG-rated anime you could watch with your kids if you're older. One could argue that the niceness of the show prevents any real drama from building in the characters' lives (one character has an unwell mother, but the writers don't end up putting her on her deathbed, like a more serious show would). But you know what? Not every show needs to be life-and-death and angst. This show can be a breath of fresh air after watching, say, Eureka 7.
Daicon films (special)
Death Note (TV)
Dragon Ball (TV) Very good A surprisingly entertaining show if you don't mind some kiddy humor and very barely passable animation. Mostly interesting for historical reasons when a fan of DBZ wants to go back and see how it all started. And the tournaments are cool.
Dragon Ball GT (TV) Awful Do not watch this show if you have to pay to see it. Do not watch this show if you have not loved watching DBZ and DB. Do not watch this show if your family has a history of cancer. This show will give it to you.
Dragon Ball Z (TV) Very good Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. The dub sometimes harms this show, but the appeal of the characters and the action scenes still shine through.
Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku (special) Very good An eerily compelling story. One could say that it's not very DBZ-like, but then again Toriyama said it was his favorite story. *shrugs* It is definitely worth seeing, once you've watched the Frieza saga of DBZ.
Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge (movie 5) Decent Meh. Cooler discovers another form beyond Frieza's final one? Oh brother. And why do Goku and Vegeta *always* insist on fighting as regular Saiyans and only transforming when they get the stuffing kicked out of them, when it should be obvious that they need to power up at the very beginning?
Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (movie 1) Good I find this movie and the next very charming. The other movies seem to lack something in comparison. Ah, musicals, that's what it is. We need more goofy songs with Gohan and dinosaurs and intoxicating fruit. Seriously, I like this movie, although the ending is a bit deus-ex-machina.
Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug (movie 4) Decent Meh. A terribly confusing dub mars what would be a pretty mediocre story anyway. According to the dub, the aliens need to change our atmosphere to be breathable for them, hence the headgear. And yet we can still breathe it when they're done spewing dark clouds up into the atmosphere that incidentally block out the sun as well. And when one guy gets his helmet's visor kicked out, he screams upon seeing the sun. Hmm... another classic flub by FUNi.
Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks (special)
Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler (movie 6)
Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (movie 3)
Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest (movie 2) Masterpiece The perfect DBZ movie. Nothing ever topped this. The direction, the pacing, it's all golden. All the movies lack the epicness and character development of the series, but this is the best of the lot, so as a DBZ *movie*, I rate it a Masterpiece.
Ergo Proxy (TV)
Escaflowne: The Movie Excellent Although I haven't seen the TV series, so I can't compare and contrast, this is a fun ride. Beautifully animated with fantastic action. Surprising how little Escalfowne there is in it, though.
Eureka Seven (TV) Decent I still think this show is too emotional. It gets painful to watch. And those kids need some serious corporal punishment. But I was pleased with the ending; it did not disappoint one bit. I simply feel that this show should have been *no more than* 26 episodes. The same story could easily have been told in that amount of time. I think the overall youth of the staff shows through in some inexperienced decisions and poor pacing, but it's not a bad show, just uneven.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Excellent This CHOP! movie is KICK! a non-stop BLAM! ride, as we BOOM! revisit Cloud and CLUMP! the gang CRORK! after the end of NARF! the game. Was that sentence hard to read? Well, now you can begin to understand what it's like to watch a fight scene which cuts to a new angle every 0.5 seconds. Aside from Nomura's directorial spasticness, though, this is a good movie. It builds on Cloud's character a little, and we get to see Vincent and Tifa in action (and the rest of the gang to a lesser degree). In fact, this movie is mostly about fan service -- of the action variety. Non-FFVII-lovers need not apply.
FLCL (OAV) Masterpiece This is such a superb anime. Perfect animation (you won't see this animation snob say that very often), nearly perfect scoring courtest of the rock band The Pillows, perfect direction by Tsurumaki-san... this is one of the Gainax greats, people.
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Masterpiece Some hardcore violence and pointless toplessness aside, this is one of Oshii's best moments, as he tells a deep story of a possible future where everyone has been "cyberized" and crime (and anti-crime) have been taken to new high-tech levels. Surprisingly demanding on an intellectual level.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Excellent This direct sequel to the first movie doesn't feel like a sequel in terms of style. It's more thought-oriented, or perhaps simply less action-oriented (and less violent, thankfully). The pace is slower, but I found it quite enjoyable. Put on your thinking cap before pressing Play.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Very good Not a sequel to either movie but rather a separate story (or timeline), this is not dissimilar in style to the movie, but toned down somewhat for TV (so Motoko *doesn't* need to be topless to use thermoptic camouflage! I knew it!). Nonetheless, this is a very worthy successor to the first movie; thoughtful, but with some great action moments.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV)
Gunbuster (OAV)
.hack//SIGN (TV) Good I know many found this boring, but I dug it. Just wait to watch it until you feel like watching people talk for half an hour. Don't come into this after watching DBZ or doing something exciting. Best time to watch (BTTW): 9 p.m.
Howl's Moving Castle (movie)
Immortal Grand Prix (TV) So-so As long as you don't mind the use of CG for the racing mechs (and I didn't mind it much despite my general dislike of CG in anime), this is an entertaining show. Unfortunately, it suffers from good-guys-win-all-the-time syndrome (for the most part). It's also very light on any real drama or story.
Immortal Grand Prix (TV 2) Decent It seems that the writers became aware of the flaw I pointed out in the first season and decided to ad some drama outside the racetrack. It does improve the show, not quite to where I think Japanese writers would have taken it, but still, it's an improvement. And they also introduce some real challenges for Team Satoshi.
(The) Irresponsible Captain Tylor (OAV) Very good
(The) Irresponsible Captain Tylor (TV)
KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple (TV)
Kiddy Grade (TV) So-so (dub), Good (sub) A fine action/sci-fi drama set in the super-distant future. Great soundtrack, sweet animation. Really must re-watch sometime. Please note that I rated the dub lower not because I didn't like it per se, but because I couldn't listen to it; see, the voices were so familiar from other FUNi dubs, mainly Dragon Ball Z. I *liked* the DBZ VAs, but I just couldn't listen to them playing these roles, so I switched over to Japanese early on.
Kikaider-01: The Animation (OAV) Good A retro style story about a robot wanting to be a human. Not unlike Pinocchio, except with awesome fight scenes thrown in.
Kino's Journey (TV) Excellent I hardly need say anything about this show. Everyone who's seen it raves about it. Suffice to say that it's smart without being pretentious, somehow heavy-handed while still charming, and an all-too-short ride.
Last Exile (TV) Very good A bit on the angsty side, but fun, light and airy whenever the characters are in the sky. Great animation and sound. Confusing ending.
Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers (TV) Good
Macross Plus (OAV) Excellent Yess, this is more like it. A kick-butt story of two pilots who hate each others' guts, all over a woman, with some great action and a good story told with an adult mindset.
Macross Plus Movie Edition
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (TV) Excellent (dub & sub) Are you an otaku? Are you at least pretty well-versed in anime? If you've at least seen the big ones, this is for you. A parody of everything from super robots to Eva, from noir to Hollywood to fan service in anime, this show somehow manages to mock everything in 13 episodes. And yet, beneath that, there's actually a touching story and characters you can care about.
Martian Successor Nadesico (TV) Good (dub), Very good (sub) I'm still not sure who the Successors part is referring to, but forget that: this is a show which is equal parts silliness and seriousness. The silly parts are just short of crazy SD-ness, and the seriousness extends to killing characters, so the show tends to be a bit of a rollercoaster ride. It's also one part self-referential analysis, and one part hardcore science fiction. It jumps around a bit much for my tastes, but eventually does explain nearly everything and ultimately is a solid show that's worth owning.
Martian Successor Nadesico: The Motion Picture - Prince of Darkness Very good The obligatory sequel movie. It's sort of like Prince of Darkness is to the TV series what End of Eva was to the Eva TV series; a much darker, potentially alienating experience where the director seemed to be in need of meds. But since Nadesico was lighter than Eva to begin with, the darker movie version isn't as dark as End of Eva. Still, it's a bit of a shocker, especially at the start. Definitely worth seeing after the series, though.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV)
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya (ONA)
Metropolis (movie) Good This is properly called Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis to avoid confusion with Fritz Lang's old masterpiece. While it's nowhere near as groundbreaking as Lang's work, it is a strangely compelling, even disturbing take on boy-meets-girl, wrapped in a future world of robots and intrigue. The retro style clashes in a fascinating way with the acts taking place.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (TV) Good When I first saw this show, and the main character Domon Kashu's signature SMELL MY FINGER move, I thought this was a blight on Gundam much as I referred to SD Gundam (in the Seen Some section). Actually, this show gets surprisingly addictive. It's completely unfaithful to the traditional Gundam series, but as its own thing, you really get to caring about the characters and wanting to follow the story. The action can be good, but it relies on a lot of old corner-cutting standby techniques, and the animation isn't that high-caliber to begin with. Definitely not to be shown first to a Gundam newbie, but those with an open mind or affinity for super robots should check it out. But seriously, "Domon Kashu"? That's just the tip of the stupid-name iceberg in this show.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) Masterpiece
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Special Edition (movie) Masterpiece This movie nearly killed me with happiness. One of my absolute favorite anime, expanded upon by this sequel/prequel, and animated with incredible detail, fluidity and panache. Absolute must-see for any fan of the Gundam Wing TV series.

Planetes (TV) Very good This starts off as a decent show with an unusually realistic and detailed sci-fi setting for anime, and an annoying main character, but she grows on you (and gets more mature herself). The second half of the show really improves upon the first half, and by the end by estimation of the show had risen substantially. A good show for the older fans (kids will not get the relationship stuff).

Blue Dragon (TV)
Blue Gender (TV) Not really good I really don't like the whole Spaceship Trooper genre, the whole "blow alien bugs to pieces" genre. Moved on after a couple episodes.
Hamtaro (TV) Decent Proof that the Japanese are the Masters of Cute.
Inuyasha (TV) So-so I don't know, I just don't go in for the whole endless journey kind of anime. One of the things I like most about anime is how many of them tell a complete story in 26 episodes, in comparison to American TV shows, which, once they get a timeslot, try to hold onto it as long as possible, dragging out any plot as far as they need to. Inu Yasha smacks too much of that mentality.
MÄR (TV)
Now and Then, Here and There (TV)
Peacemaker (TV) Not really good Sometimes impulse purchases don't work out. I bought the first volume but found it really wasn't my thing, so I sold it back.
Pokémon (TV) So-so I have nothing relevant to say about Pokemon, except that I get giggles thinking about this show being marketed in the U.S. as Pocket Monsters.
Rave Master (TV)
Sailor Moon (TV) Decent This is like DBZ for girls. Never had much interest in it as a guy, but I saw some of one of the movies and was impressed by the action bits.
SD Gundam Force (TV) Not really good Blight upon the Gundam universe, SD is thy name.
(The) Super Milk-chan Show (TV) Weak This show did not live up to my initial expectations. I suppose South Park fans might like it, though.
(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV)
UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie (TV)
Viewtiful Joe (TV)
Yu-Gi-Oh! (TV 1/1998)
Yumeria (TV)
Zatch Bell (TV) Decent I don't really have any interest in this show; I just want to know how Gash became Zatch in the dub.
