Does anyone know why it is taking so long to have this anime licensed? I would have figured someone would have it by now since Yoshihiro Togashi's other series, Yu Yu Hakusho, has finished being released except for box sets.

It's because the series is so old now. I would love to see it brought to the US because its such a wonderful story, but I doubt it will.

I'm quite surprised that they don't have it over here. And unfortunately until somebody gets it, if they do, we're just going to have to wait. However, while you're waiting you could always read the manga, since they have it over here.

Unfortunately it's unlikely the excellent series will never be licensed since the newer shounen action series would pull in much more audiences with better quality, and more modern storylines and character designs. I still consider at as the most deserving series of an American release but, oh well. I have bought the entire Japanese DVD Box-Set collection which is great but I can't understand it..yet.

The license manga been getting so so reviews for its cliche story. Having seen the first 20 episode, I don't believe it's as good as some people are claiming.

Well the manga is a decade old now so I could see how recent readers of manga can see it as cliche, But I think it has a very original story line. The TV series was on for 3 years spawning 3 OAVS as well. So someone liked it. |

I am somewhat curious, if nothing else the series isn't that long compared to most shonen jump, and it's finished. I reckon I'll check it out.

The series is not finished. The Manga is still on going but its been on sporadic relases schedule since 2004 but as of the time of this posting its still on indefinite hiatus and has been since roughly April 2006. |

The early portion of the series is decent, but the anime didn't do itself any favors by dragging out the exam that long. I lost interest around episode 28 and decided I'd just stick with the manga.
Actually, the manga isn't quite a decade old yet. It started in June 1998. But its a lot older than I thought. I thought it started around 2000 or '01. Sadly, it will probably never finish. It's been on 'hiatus' for over a year now and there are no signs of it continuing. Also, the TV series is only 62 episodes and it ran for about a year and a half, not three years. |

Really? I thought it started in 1996. That's at least what it says in the author descriptions in each of the volumes anyways. But yeah, it's kind of sad to hear about how the manga has been struggling lately. I've been really enjoying the american volume releases. The art seems to be on the so-so level, and it can get pretty boring at times, especially with a lot less fighting/action then I thought there'd be, but it really does have one heck of a storyline, and some of the ideas for techniques and stuff are very interesting. I have it rated at Excellent for now, which is about where I have pretty much all of what I consider to be some of the best shounen series ever at. I've never seen the anime though, been trying to get around to it, but just can't seem to. I actually hear it's even better than the manga, and same goes for the OVAs. Personally I think I'd definitely love for it to be licensed, but yeah, from what I hear for the reasons I hear, It's likely never going to happen. However, I don't really think it being a decade old has anything to do with it. I mean, Yu Yu Hakusho was about a dacade old when it was licenced, was it not? As was DBZ and Dragonball. |

Yeah, one thing for newbie fans to keep in mind is that large swaths of Naruto were "borrowed", quite respectfully, from HXH. Aparently Togashi loves Naruto though so it's cool. I think that the Shin York-Greed Island arcs are some of the best arcs in manga. |

I was going by what the encylcopedia said, but its possible I mistook a 6 for an 8. Edit: No, the encyclopedia has 1998 for the vintage.
Struggling is being very generous. The manga hasn't had a new chapter in over a year and there are no signs of it starting up again. When I started collecting it, I had heard of the art being atrocious in the recent chapters. And in the last few volumes of the Viz release, it has definitely been going downhill. It's not painful to look at yet, but its on its way there. From what I hear, the art was fixed up for the tankoban releases, so it shouldn't ever be as bad as the scans I saw as examples, but its still probably going to look pretty sad near the end. |

So it seems to be. I was cheering at his art version of Naruto he drew in the latest Viz release. It's nice to know he likes it. As for some things in Naruto having been borrowed from HXH, yeah, I have actually noticed a few things that seemed a little similar. Nothing too bad though, at least from what I can tell anyways. I mean, it doesn't seem to be an actual copy or anything, like, say, how Kishimoto's brother basically took the whole character backgrounds and motivations almost 100% with O-Parts Hunter. It seems too me more like he just used those HXH ideas and did his own thing with them.
Hmmm, interesting. Sounds like someone made a typo somewhere, either Viz or the encyclopedia.
Yeah, or so it seems. My explanation earlier of how the art is more on the so-so level was actually based on recent volumes. I mean, the earlier ones had, well, maybe just slightly better art than so-so. Personally, I'm not really to favorable of Togashi's art, but I do believe his stories at least more than make up for lack of art quality however. I haven't really noticed it getting to bad though, at least not yet. It's at least tolarible anyways. Still though, with it being this bad already, I can't even imagine how terrible it get's latter on. As long as the story's just fine though, I don't think it'll be too bad for me. It really does keep sounding more and more like maybe Togashi just lost interest in doing this series at a certain point, and now probably doesn't plan on doing any more of it. He should still at least give it a proper ending if he's going to do that. I don't know how true that is though. If anything, it sounds more like the SJ doesn't want to publish it anymore, sort of like what happened to Zombie Powder. Or maybe it's a little of both, I don't know. |

Yeah, Shonen manga are all about borrowing, and it's not like Naruto is anywhere near as much a rip-off as, say Fair Tale is of One Piece, but there are definitely elements there that seem a bit too coincidental, especially the part where Naruto gets "element tested."
Well, around Greed Island the art started to look like he scribbled it out on napkins while at lunch. All the lines were flowy and disconnected, the backgrounds were minimal, if they existed at all, it was a mess. They apparently got cleaned up for the novel-sized releases, which is probably all Viz is putting out, but it was pretty ugly. He claimed some sort of illness at the time, which is the blame for the woes of the comic. Whether that illness was general, arm-specific, in his head, who knows? I just wish he'd wrap that series up, even if someone else drew it. |

Yes, of course, how could I forget! But yeah, I'd definitley say that's true about shounen, although once again, not to the degree where it's a serious problem anyways. That's one of the many reasons why I always like to liken it to superhero comics, because superhero comics seem to be all about borrowing as well.
Excuses excuses. Nah, if it's true then yeah, I'd say that'd do it. I mean, it's kinda hard to do quality animation when you're dealing with a sickness of som sort. I'm with you though, I'm really more worried about it being finished eventually, knowing what I know now about the situation that is. I mean, while animation is a nice plus and all, it really isn't that big a necessity, and I've always been more of a story comes ahead of all kind of person anyways. |
