Miyazaki's scenery is abosutely stunning. I really like Totoro's and Mononoke's scenery.

Miyazaki all the way. Nausicaa to me had some of the best painted sceneries since it told you all about the culture of the locals, the decay wrought by the Spores, and everything else.

I think that one sign of a good anime is how well the anime uses location and scenery to tell a story. Instead of using characters to say really dumb one-liners like "everything's been destroyed!" or "there's fungus growing everywhere!", Miyazaki and Ghibli design the background so that you will notice that a place has been obliterated or that fungus is starting to creap in through the cracks and floors.

As teachers would tell student writers in my school, "show, don't tell".

Anddd I'll stop aimlessly rambling off topic Razz. (bad Raven! Bad bad!)

One that stands out in my brain is Haibane Renmei.

I like the mechanical look of Witch Hunter Robin, and the 3D is as nice as you can get with 3D.

But not as nice as the 3D of Last Exile. Last Exile has that nice urban but oddly spectacular look and those clouds look so amazing, much nicer than the real thing.

I thought Voices From a Distant Star was beautifully drawn. Macross Plus had some good scenery too and the animation was great.
Anything by Miyazaki always looks fantastic.

I have to agree that both A Wind Named Amnesia and .hack//SIGN had some of the most beautiful background sceneries I have ever scene.
