Hello, all.
Just today, I spotted a new Initial D Arcade Stage 4 machine in a arcade I 'accidentally' passed by. Being a big fan of the manga, a lesser fan of the anime, and a former addict of the earlier versions, I jumped at the chance to take the thing for a spin.. and was promptly weirded out by the new physics engine. The cars I used all had severe cases of snap oversteer at the limit.. or maybe it was just my crappy driving, I dunno.
Anyone else here run across the new version in your friendly neighborhood arcades? Have you guys tried it? What are your impressions? According to wikipedia, the international (English) version was released in July, so they may already be everywhere, I just didn't notice them until now..

I haven't played the new one, but I did play the original Initial D arcade game. The physics of that game weren't that great either. Because it is infact just that, an arcade game, with arcade physics.
I kinda feel like I'm alittle more experienced than the average joe when it comes to racing game physics, with the fact of how much time and money I seem to waste trying to turn my computer into a driving simulator, and also the fact that I actually race cars in real life (legally, I might add). There are only two arcade racing games that I found actually kinda simulated real car physics. That would be Hard/Race Drivin' series and maybe Ferrari 355 Challenge. But even those games have their flaws in the physics to be a true simulator, which I guess is to be expected, because they are still arcade games.
But I would be interested in at least trying it out since I an somewhat an Initial D fan. I just might try to figure out if there are any around, but I'm guessing I probably won't be able to find one around.

I'm also a fan of the Initial D anime series and I've played all versions of the game from ver.1 - ver.3 so I'quite good at it.
I discovered that my arcade just got in ver. 4 so I just had to give it a try and I was firstl annoyed that I had to by a new card, losing all my current data but at least the card is plastic now.
Now for the actual driving, I also noticed the new physic engine, which makes simiple turning into a mission, sooo much oversteer!!! The good thing though is that it makes it incredibly similar to the anime now, where you can drift and perform parrallel drifts with opponnts . I also love the fact that, now after some practice, I can drive one-handed like the old guy at the end of Initial D - Stage 4 just to show off.
So the new game has it's good and bad points.

Yeah, the card system is revamped, with a 3-car garage in place, and a 150-play limit before card change. Wonderful, I say. The cell-shaded polygonal models of the characters are... interesting, and apparently, its based off of the PS2 game.
The full Myogi course is very welcome, but I haven't tried the Tsukuba course yet. I was a bit surprised, though, since when I saw the name 'Tsukuba', I instantly thought that it was the Tsukuba circuit, the one where Best Motoring does their battles and time attacks.
Hahaha, one-handed driving, like the Purple Shadow guy in the S2000? I used to do that in the older versions, since I didn't really need my left hand for car control... Now, it's really tough to do that. But maybe I just got too used to Battle Gear 4's steering lock-to-lock range ... But then, I DO talk to myself like the other Purple Shadow guy, so I suppose that it isn't all bad, fufufufu!

I find it easier to steer with one hand because I use a 6 gear RX-8 which makes impossible to use both hands on courses like Myogi. One thing I don't like about the course is how narrow Akagi and Akina are that it' makes it so hard to overtake.
I also tend to shout and curse at the game, like that fat old guy (god's foot), cause it's so hard to stay in control.

Oooh. 6 gear machines. Have you tried it in battles yet? As I recall, the best starts in earlier versions do come from those cars with six gears, does this still apply to this version in your experience? I feel that to some extent, rocket start still does, but I still haven't tried it in battles, so I can't really be sure.
And, yes, I'm with you on the shouting and cursing at the game due to lack of control. I somewhat feel that using left foot braking to stabilize the car in-corner is useful, as is stepping on the gas on exit VERY gingerly, but I'll have to try this stuff out to confirm. Only problem is, the arcade I found it in is incredibly far from where I live (almost a 2-hour commute), so it's pretty tough to get good at it right now. I'd have to wait for local arcades to get it before I can waste my life at it again...

Yeah I've tried it out and my 6-gear RX-8 seems to get a boost ahead of most cars, if I shift correctly however knowing when to shift to 5 & 6 gear is really difficult so I tend to messed up a lot on tracks like Akagi.

Fascinating. I've always avoided 6 gear cars because of that, but with the slippiness of the game, maybe I'd get an R34 GT-R next, I'm just not sure... Another weird thing is, I used to have my steering at around 4... Now I have it all the way up to 9, just for control.
But then, the graphics of the game really are pretty, aren't they? The leaves along the side of the road on Irohazaka look a lot more like leaves in this version than they did in Version 3... And the wider screen is really a nice touch too. The gear lever also had a far more solid feel than earlier versions, but maybe that's just because it's a new machine.
It just seems that this version has more of the 'anime' feel to it than earlier versions. The sparks when you collide with your opponent, and the sideways-happy cars all combine to give it that feel. It's great.

Yeah the overall feel of the game is just like in the anime where if you're good enough you can also perform a lot of the manuevres. I also love the imporvements in the graphics and I can even see the brake pads heat up when the car in front of me starts drifting .
All this talk makes me wanna play it more, but first things first.... MONEY!!!
