The most recent Buried Treasure column reminded me of the "classic" (dun dun DUNNNN) MD Geist!

I saw the OAV several years ago as I first got into anime, when I rented everything on Blockbuster's shelves. At that time I pretty much enjoyed everything, and hadn't yet developed any criteria for separating the good anime from the bad.

I've seen this titled consistently ranked among the worst anime of all time, so could you all please refresh my memory and explain why this title is universally hated?

As a disclaimer, I'm not endorsing or defending the movie in any way; I'm just curious why such a negative stigma surrounds this OAV.

Personally, I highly enjoyed the original version of M.D. Geist. The director's cut is a whole 'nother story though...that was unnecessary for them to go back and add in those new scenes of people being ripped apart. Pretty sick. I'm kinda curious myself why it's so reviled. It's been one of my personal favorites since I saw it when it first came out. Then again, my tastes in anime are definitely not of the norm...

I mean, sure, it's not a piece of art by any means, but it sure is fun. Maybe it has to do with a lot of folks nowadays not wanting to just turn off their brains. Not that there's anything wrong with wanting to watch something intelligent, but once in a while it's ok to forget about all that and watch something like M.D. Geist.

MD Geist is decent. It has nice character designs, a good electonic score and all out action storyline with some awesome military style mecha to match.

It's been fashionable for almost a decade since it's release to rip into this title. If you like the 80's then MD Geist should be watched at least once, decide for yourself what it is to you.

Track down the original VHS or LD rather than the Director's Cut which has a lot of scenes reanimated and overall is pointless and inferior.

I'd say because the "plot" is SO incoherent that the only real purpose is to laugh at it..and the dub is an, um... "masterpiece".

Never seen the sequel, but the original was OK. North Star fans should like it.

I've never watched the dub, but I can tell you the plot is pretty straight- forward. Geist is trying to get revenge on the guys who imprisoned him on that satellite that crashed in the beginning of the film. With that said, he'll use anyone and everyone he can to get to the ultimate weapon "Death Force" so he can finally have his revenge. That's why he works with the girl and the military guys...so he can get close to the Death Force which the military was going out to try and stop. Like I said, it's pretty straight-forward. Smile Kind of a basic action movie plot.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I couldn't figure that out if my life depended on it. To me, it was just so random. So there's a guy with a gun that shoots different types of ammunition for no explained reason. And...he wants to kill people. And now he's naked. Oh, now he's fully clothed. And it seems like he knows this guy...he seems angry, but for reasons I don't understand....etc. It just...didn't make any sense to me.

Would those be some examples of why you said the plot's purpose is to laugh at it? What you described sounds either silly or pitiful to me.
