I'm intensely curious what sort of story can be told across two such nightmare scenarios in only 32 pages. Or maybe a "story" isn't the point here--it could be more of a emotional response piece told through imagery.
BTW: in the "language" of Nazi concentration camp uniforms, the inverted red triangle indicates a political prisoner. |

This looks like St. Maximilian Kolbe.
He died in Auschtwitz, though he was Polish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximilian_Kolbe So maybe it takes inspiration from him. |

Yes, Kolbe founded a monastery called Mugenzai no Sono in Nagasaki in the early 30's, which survived the atomic bombing due to its location on "the wrong side" of a hill. I'm very interested to see exactly who the eponymous "Dutchman" might be...

Ah yes, that is the connection! https://www.bluearmy.com/the-incredible-story-of-the-miracle-at-hiroshima/ St. Maximilian Kolbe is likely the missionary. I'm assuming the boy could be a Japanese local of Nagasaki. Perhaps the 'Dutchman' refers to someone else? A narrator? |
