Does anyone know if a mangaka has ever just quit a series? Like, just finish a volume and then just abruptly say they don't feel like continuing it? Are they contractually obligated to conclude a series?

I'm pretty sure that's what happened with Yu Yu Hakusho.

I'm pretty sure that's what happened with Yu Yu Hakusho. |
I feel like Yukiru Sugisaki also likes to do this. I'm not sure if D.N.Angel finally wrapped after its second hiatus, but Candidate for Goddess was absolutely left in the dust because Sugisaki lost interest. Tokko also ended fairly abruptly because Fujiwara got tired of it. Strangely, both got anime adaptations that rather faithfully adapt the source material and practically stop in the middle of a plot arc as a result. I sometimes wonder what might have happened with those series had they gotten to finish out their stories.
