Wait, no, that's not the right one, U149 was supposed to be the one that gets a second season.
Jokes aside, I assume it was planned as two cours from the beginning, because I really don't see any success in cinema that would warrant a second season otherwise. Unless of course it wasn't reported here or I just missed it. Still, a bit sad to see the worst of the three productions get a second season. I don't know much about the characters/stories, so I'm not going to pretend either is worse than the other, but so far, both Million Live as well as the trailers for Shiny Colors have been pretty bad when it comes to the quality of the show, simply because it uses what seems like really cheap CG. A lot of shots just look like cutscenes from a ten year old video game. Especially shots like this look really bad. Well, maybe the next installement will not use CG... |

I completely agree that the 3DCG looks atrocious, and the framerate or something keeps giving me eye strain, so I can't even watch most of it... But insofar as their popularity, both Million Live's anime and Shiny Colors' anime were massively successful, and Japanese fans I read about praised them for their emotional depth and presenting the characters well. The numbers were comparable to U149, but I assume the 3DCG shows are just easier to make. |

Oh, were they really? From what it seemed to me, U149 was quite successful, selling more than 4.500 copies of every BD volume in the first week 1, 2 and 3, which is comparable to something like Kusuriya. Sadly I don't have any numbers for Million Live (and obviously Shiny Colors, because it hasn't been released outside of the cinema yet), however from a quick glance it doesn't seem like Million Live ever got any news here that mentioned it being successful in cinema, while Shiny Colors got one news article reporting the first movie not earning enough to be in the top ten for that week. Of course that doesn't mean they weren't successful (If you have some sources, I'd love to see actual numbers), but it does seem there was less interest. And at the same time it also feels like both Million Live and Shiny Colors are more of a "make them to get them done" production, both games are generation less revenue than the Cinderella Girls game (according to 1 and 2) so I can see why they went with the CG production. Cheaper overall for just getting things done, but it obviously won't have the quality the U149 anime had. So it goes hand in hand, the more successful the game, the better the production of the anime. Though there are probably also other factors at work, like the size of the cast which was much bigger with Million Live compared to U149 and as well as a different tone in the overall story and atmosphere. Maybe Shiny Colors will be closer to U149 in that regard, given that their strong part won't be animation, judging from previous productions by Polygon Pictures. |

It could be a matter of selection bias, but I was reviewing both TV slots and NicoNico ratings, in terms of consistency of viewership and rating of each episode. Million Live was consistently among the top 5 rated shows in its season on NicoNico every week, and hit above the norm for its time slot on TV. As for Shiny Colors, I have fewer metrics, but in terms of people who went, I assume that's more in line with the game's popularity (since anyone who went wouldn't have writing quality anticipated ahead of time due to the limited showing), and in terms of review, I saw people I follow on Japanese art twitter clamouring positively about having seen it. Also, it is my understanding that BD sales are becoming much more selective in the fandom nowadays with streaming having gained traction. |

More Idolmaster is always a good thing but I'm surprised this isn't an announcement for a second season of Million Lives or U149 because Shiny Colors hasn't even aired its first season yet. Just saying this is quite unusual, lol

I agree and feel the animation of art for U149 is the best in the series. |

Shiny Colors had a theater run. It might be less a matter of which series deserves a sequel and more a matter of which series already started plans for a sequel, and were just waiting for the first part to show just enough success to justify greenlighting it. |
