Saturday is a busy anime day and that includes several great slice of life shows. This one and Mono basically being back to back makes for quite the calming evening. The first episode had me hooked in that there was a lot of great looking food (really tasty looking) and some charming characters. Of the latter Maco is going to need to be coaxed out of her shell but the food club seems like just the thing for that.

Bring on next week, Moko

Episode 1

Yes, I enjoyed this, too. I like Cute Girls Eating Cute Things (CGECT) shows... I have fond memories of Gourmet Girl Graffiti, for example. I don't think Shinon's fantasy of scoring a club room just to laze around in is going to come true and that's a good thing. Bring on the grub!

I just said that Cute Girls Doing Cute Things isn't generally one of my favorite genres (unless there's a supernatural or sci-fi element) over on the That's Journey thread, but I guess I was lying, or I don't know my own heart, because I liked this show too. In fact, next Saturday...oh wait, that's Easter weekend. One of these Saturday mornings I'll get some black bean chili going in a crock pot and really get in the zone for this show.

Anyhow, I was sympathetic to the main character's social anxiety, and I thought the club application scene was funny, and I really liked how... Kur-ea? ....the restaurant girl and her mom were just cool in a laid back way. I liked the whole vibe of the show.

Well, I'm not sure what's going on with that floating cannibalistic egg mascot. It reminds me of smokehouses whose walls are covered with decorations of smiling pigs. But no biggy.

That is the one downside for me, as I find Azuki Moeno's (she is an idol and not a regular VA) voicing of Mokotarō to be grating.

Otherwise about what we would expect from the people who did Non Non Biyori and P.A. Works. 5 Stars for Episode 1.

I was pretty darn close to taking screen caps of the food. I've been re-watching Campfire Cooking in Another World to re-do the caps for that and to get in the mood for S2, only to see this real-world, CGDCT version of it, instead. The main character's social anxiety thing is a nice twist, though. It's subtle and all-too relatable.

That was a great episode for setting up the club and cooking their first meal together. Seems like making a fake club to just laze about is not an option at their school and the chaos to quickly produce something was fun. The chemistry between the girls is good enough for them to already feel like a group of friends.

Tony K, if you want to watch an anime where they really make you want to plunge a pair of chopsticks into the screen, I'd suggest watching one of my all time favorite anime, Bento! Not that I'd want the characters of this anime brawling in supermarkets to get their cooking ingredients, or that I'd change anything about the anime. I think the characters balance each other out well, and the show is just what it wants to be, and that's a fine thing.

Ah, I remember seeing stills from that show, but the fanservice-y elements turned me away at the time, making me think it was more of that than anything else. But I will definitely put it on my queue. Thanks!

Bento definitely has some fan service though that's not its primary focus, and it's far from a socially enlightened show. But it doesn't have any of the elements where I personally draw the line, and I find it hilarious. It straight-facedly parodies those wandering ronin shows where there's an elaborate set of rituals and rules surrounding duels and everyone talks very, very seriously about honor.

But my original point was, savoring the bento prizes is a huge part of the anime, and the bentos are described and drawn in such a reverent way that I always wound up getting hungry watching it.

But I didn't mean to get sidetracked from this thread's subject.

Episode 2

Taking things slowly, as we still have one young lady shown in the OP and ED to be introduced (Nana Hoshi).

I hope they give the university staffer a name as she is a nice contrast to the goofy Food Culture Research Club girls, as well as being waifu material. But the club should have told her how much time they had to spend cleaning (the only real world place with that much dust would be a testing laboratory where soil is dried and pulverized).

The high hopes for this show due to Atto and P.A. Works being involved are on their way to being met - think I have to give it the full 5 Stars.

A good slice of life can make doing something that does not sound special or all that interesting on paper fun/charming and this show is great at it. The first half was searching for some lost money and yet it was a fun time (with a silly conclusion). The second half was the gang just having a fun time (besides struggling on the stairs) with lots of eating. Of note is Kawai indeed becoming more energetic every week.

If I was going to compare the slice of life genre to a food dish - and I guess I am since I opened the sentence that way - I'd say that some of the spices are charm, humor, sloth, food, music, and scenic backgrounds. I'd also say that this show is using them in a pretty good ratio.

I liked the search for the missing money and the hike and the bento pavilion, but mostly, I think they all served to develop the sense of friendship between the club members.

Because, of course, the main ingredient of slice of life is love.

Episode 4 introduced Nana and it sure made for an awkward yet fun time. The first half was hilarious with Mako thinking that Nana was some kind of crazed killer and later on was Tsutsuji trying yet failing hard to get them to talk. Seems like the studying/eating together in the second half did the trick though and the food looked good. There was barely any Moko this week.

I had a bet going on with myself that the blonde girl was going to turn out to be the actress inside that Egg Mascot that does cooking videos. Good thing I didn't post that theory (whew).

I'm not sure if new girl's frightened shtick really adds much since that was already the MC's thing, though maybe the point is that she'll force the MC to change by officially taking that position in the club. What I am sure of is that it's best to either wait until meal time or take some pains to prepare a good snack before watching this anime.

Oh, and I fully listened to the ending song. Not bad.
