I can get a whole movie being uploaded being a crime but a trailer not so much since it's whole purpose is to get you to go see the movie.

Not your call how they want to market their film. A lot of time, money, effort, goes into planning and executing a marketing strategy, including when and where stuff like trailers are shown so as to have maximum impact. It's not for you, me, or anyone outside of the ones who made the product and are selling the product, to decide if now is the time to start showing off the trailer and talking details, etc. The law in this regard is mostly plain and clear - filming inside a movie theater while a film is playing is illegal, punishable by a fine and/or jail time. Uploading that recording is further illegal, punishable by a fine and/or jail time. There's no "I think their marketing strategy sucks" exclusion in the law.

Doesn't change the way they're going about it is pretty stupid. Now what is a trailer's purpose supposed to be again?

Demon Slayer is a billion dollar franchise and Aniplex isn’t some tiny indie company. They’re not going to become poor because some kids recorded a trailer that’s probably going to be released in like a month anyway. Just send a C&D or something but charging $10,000 yen for posting a trailer is just Aniplex being cops.

Who said Aniplex is charging the fee. The law doesn't care about who you are or who the victim is. If Aniplex, or anyone, chooses to let someone violate a law with no consequence, why does the law exist at all? $10k is the fine the LAW places on the individual for committing the crime. Aniplex isn't sending anyone after whoever did this to go collect $10k from their bank. All they did was post on their social media the warning that whoever did this shouldn't have and violated the law by doing so. From a legal perspective, which is what I said, you don't have an out by arguing the victim is really rich or their marketing strategy is dumb, or you don't like them for whatever reason. The LAW here is pretty straightforward.

Does it end up in court is an entirely different question that I at no point addressed.

Clearly the lack of a proper trailer for this film has been because Aniplex wanted people to go and watch the 4K screenings of Mugen Train. Whilst this probably looked good on paper, it has backfired on them.

I think it won´t. They have better things to do/prosecute.

Now, while you might be correct that it is technically illegal - goodwill is important. Emulation without owning the roms is technically illegal too, but 99,99% of gamers is still playing retro games as they please, and all nintendo is achieving with their annoying ridiculous campaigns against emulation is hate, lower sales, and people like me *hoping* they go bankrupt and a more friendly developer picks up all their IP's for cheap. And certain places like for example the EU now actively looking into making it *illegal* for games to made unplayable for people who bought them, ever, on any timescale, including online games. On top of emulation of course being legal in most places anyway.

Companies are smarter if they consider how things look to their customers, ESPECIALLY in the case of well known rabid obsessed fan/customer communities like anime fandom who'll basically fight to the death for their beloved hobby and make it their whole life and identity. You want them to keep liking you so they keep being those 600 dollar figures.

The "law" has nothing to do with that. It's stupid to make your hardcore rabbid fanbase angry at you. ESPECIALLY in an industry where they can always watch/play all your content with literally 30 seconds of work for free illegally without paying whenever they want so they can boycot you without even losing out on anything.
