Not familiar with this one, but Mangadex got hit hard earlier in the week as well(which is unfortunate since they usually take stuff down when asked and even link to all the official sources).

Disappointing to say the least. While I understand when businesses are protecting content they’re releasing to the English market, as these businesses also are cracking down on webnovels without English releases I can’t say I appreciate their actions.

Saying it hurts is questionable when it's being read in markets they're not even in and for many webnovels will never be in as they never get out of being just a webnovel. The lesson that was learned with anime and manga was making it accessible reduced piracy. When it's not accessible people are left with no choice but to pirate it to have access to it.
Webnovels will not be legally released internationally unless they've been licensed to be a light novel, receive a webtoon/manga adaptation, anime adaptation, etc. And even then it's only a chance it'd be released. So cracking down on 3rd party translations of webnovels is rather scummy when they're not making an official release themselves.

uh not fully making it available OFFICIALLY did that plus no one knows what the future holds one moment its a web novel next its the hit anime of summer. Plus this just stops official works from trying to come out or leads to fan warfare over tls

Them removing so many series, of which many are unavailable officially in English, did hurt, so I've spent time these past days to make a list of less-bad aggregators to pick up the slack.
That said, didn't even come across Reaper Scans when doing it, so at least there seems to be redundancy out there even if you have to deal with the fact you can't have them all in one place.
They, Kakao etc, might be shooting themselves in the foot here though, the good thing about dex is they explicitly forbid any uploads of rips of official releases and respond to takedowns, and those rules are enforced. Additionally, whenever the official platforms release a new chapter they usually link to those chapters under the respective titles driving some traffic to them. Out there among the aggregators/sites that won't be the case anymore...

of course, the goal of these takedowns is never to eliminate piracy completely, they know they can never do that. just too make it very inconvinient and aggravating to the normal consumer who will likely give up real quick, especially if they aren't savvy enough to find other sites that will quickly come down.

Why is it always the sites I've never heard of that get taken down.

No, there is another choice, not reading them at all.

Sure, it might work for you. But that is a choice I will not take, sorry. There is a plethora of unlicensed/unavailable in English stuff out there, other than through unofficial means, that I will continue exploring and enjoy...
And there's a whole themes worth of stuff more or less completely unavailable officially in English, like incest, loli, etc, even if they're not adult material.

It's very unrealistic to expect people to do this, especially in countries where manga licensing is even more scarce.

No, we can't have our beloved Weeb Fandom with all the cons cosplay etc that is part of it without the content, so access to the content is paramount for our hobby/community/fandom lives and all we live for.
If anime wasn't pirated at first there would not be an anime fandom at all now or this site, cons, cosplay, etc, our entire fandom lives. Given you're on here I assume you agree its good that our fandom/hobby/community exists?
When available, I will always buy. When not, I WILL read/watch elsewhere. Because I am a Weeb, and this hobby is my life, and I will never, ever, give it up. Period.

You're being a bit hyperbolic. Fansubs have existed since the 80s, but only ever generated a very small, very niche fandom. It wasn't until the "anime boom" of the 90s that we saw anime (rapidly) gain in popularity -- anime that was airing on television. We didn't need piracy for Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop, Pokemon, etc., etc. to all become big hits.
Today, virtually everything, regardless of quality, winds up getting localized and released overseas almost as soon as it comes out in Japan. Yes, there are a handful of titles that are overlooked, yes it's annoying when streaming services drop shows, yes it hurts when the odd classic fails to get a BRD release... but we could press a magic button today to end all piracy, everywhere, forever, and I just can't imagine that would result in anything even close to a deathblow to the fan communities.
