Too bad about the "improvements", but at least the original version is still available on all the other major platforms and is still a great experience.

It really seems like they only put in the new stuff so they could slap "Director's Cut" on it and charge extra instead of just doing a port with the dub. There's no shame in that and quite frankly people going "Ugh, but it's just a port" is so reductive, especially considering how much work goes into ports

“Sometimes” goes into a port considering some of the janky if not awful ports of games that have hit the market over the last 40+ years.

Yakuza has a notorious history with newer versions of a game being worse than the original due to lots of changes in the story or content so this isn't exactly surprising to hear.. I haven't played this myself but I did read about all the changes they made to the story and I really don't get why unless they're retconning things to set up a future game.

I adore Yakuza 0, it's one of my favourite games of all time, but this director's cut just isn't worth it. All the additional scenes mostly do is retcon that which didn't need to be.
Save your money and get the original version for a fraction of the price of this.

Agreed. I don't think anyone would have had a problem with doing that, so long as it was priced appropriately. Clean it up for newer hardware, add a dub since you're probably selling to people who played the more recent games, and don't try to charge close to full price for it. It's fine if the intended audience is people who haven't played the game yet and if existing players skip it because they already have a prior version. The additional cutscenes and modes seem like a misfire based on trying to entice those prior customers to double dip.

I believe the new cutscenes that were added in were all scenes that were planned for the original version of the game, but cut for various reasons. Calling them retcons doesn't seem quite right.

Maybe not a retcon, but if that was cut content, then it was probably cut for a reason. More doesn't always improve the experience.
