Episode 1

I came very close to not even checking this one out. Anime doesn't often address the topic of, er, "plus-sized" people and when it does, the result is often... not great. So I was ready for some major cringe and came away pleasantly charmed. As far as premises go, it reminds me very much of an Amy Schumer comedy of a number of years ago called I Feel Pretty inn which her character also hits her head and although she didn't lose her memory, she did emerge convinced she was absolutely beautiful.

Anyway, I know all about ymmv, so I can easily imagine others watching this and not being charmed, but it worked for me. I'll definitely be watching more. I am puzzled how Yumeko turned blonde, though, because her pre... accident? Suicide attempt? clearly shows her with brown hair. Also, it appears like there will be an actual plot going on.

I feel like if Melissa McCarthy made an amnesiac-based rom-com, this would be the anime version of that. It's serious, then funny and charming, then serious, again, but will probably stay mostly funny and charming with a positive message about self image.

It is not a show for me but I have to applaud the first episode for being unpredictable. I expected the matter of how society views and treats plus-sized people to be a prominent aspect yet I did not expect a murder mystery of sorts to also be there. The sparkly and cutesy looking cover really does hide how dark some parts are.

I should also mention that I brought up Melissa McCarthy because I find Amy Schumer mostly insufferable in a lot of her roles. I feel Yumeko's personality is much easier to cheer for and reminiscent of McCarthy in a lot of roles she plays.

I do wonder with the manga still going at 13 volumes just how soon the attempted murder thing will creep up. Like, how long can you hide that, and how long can Yumeko have amnesia until things fit together? I doubt this will turn into something like Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000), but that would certainly make for an interesting twist. And even if the crime angle gets solved, will New Yumeko be so optimistic and forgiving, she'll just let things slide in an inspirational slice of life kind of lesson?

Tee-hee, you nearly killed me and caused me to lose my memories/original personality but I am way more positive now so it is all okay.

Yeah, that would not work.

They say ignorance is bliss, so I wouldn't put that concept past this show. But this also anime/manga logic, and I'm sure there have been much more far-fetched/contrived scenarios when dealing with character/personality shifts. I guess we'll just have to see how it eventually pieces together.

I too was super worried coming in, track record would say it would not handle things sensitively. But I have to say that I found the version of Yumeko we see as very charming. Her confidence was refreshing, and as a character choice it does feel like it makes a difference in her feeling as cute as she now believes, and she is not putting anyone down.

It does make feel an aspect of side eye in whether this show intends to take her new self-confidence seriously, or if it is using it as some aspect of a joke. If this series starts to become more obvious that it thinks that not conventionally accepted (plus-sized) people are a joke for feeling good about themselves, then I will drop it.

Regarding her change in hair colour, I kind of wonder if it is along the lines of anime generally being subjective in designs, such as her coworker having pink hair when she probably doesn't, it is just an aspect of for design purposes to get across to us that her change in attitude and how she is holding herself changes her atmosphere. Or also how she sees herself. I think we also saw that her hair looked particularly messy, so she might not have been focusing on looking after herself like she was before.

A really great interview with the manga-ka. The concept itself feels quite unique. I've got my own insecurities and am interested to see how the writing handles "cognitive distortions" in general. I know it seems as simple as just "willing the thought into action," or "making it feel how you want it." But sometimes that's hard.

Episode 10

I know I haven't been posting in this thread but I continue to enjoy the show - so thanks for highlighting that article, Tony K., it was a worthwhile read for a fan of the material like me. In a season where I am only following three titles, I super appreciate anything that holds my interest. The main appeal for me is, of course, Yumeko. I love her positivity (even in its full deluded state) and her seiyuu, Aya Endo, is doing a fantastic job. As much as I'm enjoying the comedic aspects, I find other elements really interesting, too. For example, there is a female character who seems to be suffering from some sort of depression. The detective character is struggling with the death of his wife. Not the sort of details that normally get thrown into a workplace/rom-com but they do add an intriguing texture. Somehow the two tones are meshing for me.

Anyway, only two episodes left and I will miss it. There are seven manga volumes which makes me think the story may not be resolved in one cours unless there is an anime original ending. I could see myself following up with the manga.

I sometimes find things are a little too pat, but I've also been broadly enjoying the show. It has a good energy and keeps its pacing brisk.

While the shows generally fairly good, I think episode 10 was really quite strong, its hard to keep a light tone while also dealing with grief in a sensitive way but they managed it very well.

That's what I thought, too. Am I completely crazy or is the show leaning towards Yumeko and Crusty Detective getting together (note to manga readers: if you know one way or the other, please don't say, I'm only interested in uninformed speculaton)?

I'm so far still enjoying the anime too!
As someone with a medical degree the plot twist amnesia is something I had to get used to, but I like how the author did everything else really. I also had to get used to the office drama meets mystery meets comedy meets romance. What kind of show am I watching??? I thought at first. Will this be a trainwreck?? Is what I thought too. But the show is pretty consistent so far.
I do wonder how they'll ever market this anime well. Not a lot of people seem to be eating this kind of ramune chips - I mean - story.

I like how the author gave the characters real issues to work with: depression, grief, self loathing. And I also like how the positive cognitive change in Yumeko has such a big effect on her and her surroundings. It's what the author intended and it works well.

Episode 11

Yay, another fan! Welp, one episode left. I wonder how much we are going to learn about the mystery of what happened to Yumeko. If it was Rikako who attacked her, that seems odd, because pre-head trauma Yumeko doesn't seem like she could have been any threat to Rikako. She was filled with self-loathing and very inward focused. Unless Rikako saw her taking the secret photos of Keisuke and jumped to a conclusion?

Also, I had no idea that a badminton birdie could be such a dangerous thing. Poor Yumeko was bleeding like she'd been hit with a .22 bullet. You learn so much by watching anime...

I've never been hit in the face by a shuttle, only a frisbee. But the skin of our face and head is known for being very dramatic. A tiny scratch will bleed so dramatically that it seems like you're about to die for real. I remember, with the frisbee incident, that most of my schoolmates and my gymnastics teacher looked at me in horror. That was because of the excessive blood loss. Meanwhile my only complaint was that the blood blocked my left eye's sight. But really it was only a tiny scratch. No pain even.

I do doubt if a scratch is possible with a shuttle with an average level badminton player, but a pro should be able to slap that baby pretty hard.
