Indeed, she's had the nickname "Prince" as long as she can remember. That is, until she met Ichimura-senpai...the only person who's really seemed to see her for herself. To her surprise, she's not sure how to handle this new relationship, especially when her newfound friend is a prince himself.

January 11, 2026 (Sunday)
Available on: Crunchyroll

----------------------------------

The show saved a ton of money simply by porting over the image of Hikaru from The Summer Hikaru Died to this show!

[EDIT: Fancy opener stuff edited. -TK]

I initially had high hopes for this one, but I thought the trailer looked like crap.

Of course, some trailers make dried out, stale anime look fresh and juicy, and some trailers do their anime a grave disservice.

So, I'm taking a wait and see attitude with this one.

That sure is a typical shoujo alright. Included in that is Yoi being seen as manly by both genders and Ichimura being rather handsy with someone who he barely knows. There was also plenty of glitter and shine on display with both characters looking perfect as can be. Ichimura being a bit of a troll amused me so I am watching a bit more.

I don't know if this is the anime with the best piano backgrounds that I've seen (or heard, I guess) this season, but it's the first one that kept making me think "Woh, great piano backgrounds." It was also pretty. So that's two big boxes checked.

I like the main character. The male lead acts like a player - I can see why the female lead has a hard time trusting it - but I think he's supposed to be sincere, and if that's the case, as cheesy as it sometimes gets, it's a refreshing change of pace from the typical anime male lead, who's either a rapist waiting to happen or someone who couldn't get to first base unless he accidentally fell on a woman, at which point he'd run away screaming. More to the point, I think the show's premise is that having someone this thick skinned around has busted up the status quo that's had her scaring most guys away her whole life.

And his point about how it's okay to be whatever you are is a hard one to argue with.

I liked it..

I didn't mind this, but I did find the male lead's pushiness obnoxious. I'll check out a bit more but in a busy season I make no promises about staying to the end.

Yeah, I didn't really like the male lead but I can imagine that would change.

The trait of anxiety (gender presentation/perception) at least has a lot more space for development, interest and discussion than "being tall". I may stick around.

Yeah, the male lead was a bit much and that was the thing I reacted to negatively in the trailer. Again, I think what we're supposed to be taking away is that he's headstrong and socially clueless, and it's that tactless nature that lets him get through the social miasma and room reading that's been keeping the MC semi-isolated in a role she never asked for.

The show's got enough going on for it that I'm willing to see if things gell.

Dayum, there are two romance shows this season with rapid progress in just the first few episodes. The era of ending the season with some hand holding and maybe a confession that gets interrupted seems to be over. Kohaku is still amusing in that he can be hard to predict, repeating his actions in real life might see you prosecuted though. Yoi can be surprisingly bold given the ending.

Yah, Kokaku is still veering erratically between stalker/love bomber and clueless but okay person who just says whatever they're thinking and has never really been called out for it. He's been isolated by his social role in his own way, come to think of it. Even so, that thing about crawling into the bed was not cool - just based on my understanding of Japan from anime (isn't that a book? All I ever needed to know about Japan, I learned from anime?) Kohaku could have ruined Yoi's reputation forever.

Yoi is just plain adorbs.

I'm assuming Yoi's dad hasn't gotten the socially progressive memo and has been worried that Yoi is a lesbian. I can't really see any other explanation for his behavior.

Kohaku's reaction when Yoi took the lead was pretty funny.

This show has so many red flags I can't even. Yoi is the only character who even seems sane. Her hyper friends are so obnoxious I don't know how she tolerates them.

I had the same reaction you did, smurky: what's with all these anime romances suddenly going at hyper-speed? Has anime finally heard the plaintive cries of, "Enough!" from us long-suffering fans??? Ah, it's probably just a fluke.

Anyway, Kokaku is growing on me even though crawling into bed with Yoi was majorly not cool. Very interested to see where things go from here.

Episode 3

Eh, I'm still not sold on these two and watching You are My Polar Opposite today clarified my misgivings about them: both them are just way too into each others looks. With Polar Opposites, you get the strong sense that both parties like each other as people. Here, especially on his end, it's all about her looks. But even with her... if he wasn't so "dreamy" would she bother going through with the "experiment?" I guess part of his journey will be about liking her for something more than just her looks. I hope the show gives us some other reason why she warms up to him other than he's good looking. He's way too pushy for my liking. Still, I'm willing to continue following this for a bit.

The episode indeed stated them finding each other attractive atleast a dozen times or so. It was a lot and right now it is clear that Mr Pushy is only interested in her looks. Yoi also finds him attractive but is somewhat interested personality wise too. Given the strong emphasis on it I assume that character development will take place to make it about more than just how hot they are. If not I will not stick around.

I presume the end of the episode is pushing the next episode to be about exactly that, but yes, very shallow so far.

I remember talking about last season pretty mid A Star Brighter Than the Sun, and talking about how it didn't spend enough time developing its (basically reasonably good) extended cast. Boy, this anime is showing me what not developing an extended cast really looks like. Perhaps its standing in the shadow of Polar Opposites, but don't know if I'll go for much more of this- the two leads aren't offering much depth and theres nothing else here.

Well, I certainly agree that it's not You and I are Polar Opposites (although Yoi and Ichumura are polar opposites now that I think about it) and I wouldn't put the two anime on the same pedestal. I'm not even sure I'd put this one on a pedestal at all. Maybe a car jack.

But that said, I do like it more than I dislike it, mostly because I like Yoi. My take on Mr. Pushy is that he is Asperger syndrome level when it comes to reading a room or social nuances, and he's gotten away with people thinking it was charming most of his life because he's hot and rich. I don't think he means harm, nor do I think he's manipulative, which I was wondering about at first. He says what he thinks in the moment without any thought about the long term consequences or implications. In a way, he's pure, and I think his total lack of concern with what other people say is why he breezed right past the social miasma around Yoi and - somewhat to his credit - has a clearer picture of her than her friends. I don't think it's all about looks. I just think he can't express himself.

Just like he meant "Got it" to be emotionally reassuring.

That's not to say that he's not a piece of work. Sometimes it's funny (like when he's legitimately trying to learn how to communicate with her), sometimes it's annoying (like when he says "That's about it" sometimes it's alarming (like when he pulls her forcefully into a dark classroom.

I'm not so sure that this relationship is supposed to be something that's meant to last (the title might indicate otherwise as do Ichimura's observations about amusement parks right before they close). It's about first love, and Yoi has plenty to say about that, and we just ignore what she says about that and "fate" because we're so used to cheesy stories about prince charmings and fate and so on that it pisses us off thinking this is supposed to be one such story.

I think it's more a story about Yoi struggling to break out of the eggshell she's been trapped in, and this guy is a hammer.
