So assuming this is a TV anime and not just, like, a standalone OVA or something, think they might segue into pulling a Toei and just adapt/expand/recut the Freedom movie into TV episodes?

I don't get the need of a prequel considering all the characters Kira, Shinn and Athrun kill in Freedom meaning we'll never explore them again unless Fukuda wants to play the cloning card.

I believe the intention here is to explore the "Freedom Incident" which is mentioned during the film but not really explained.

They only confirmed it's gonna be released in theaters? Not about whether it'll just be a 30-minute OVA or a series? Well, getting news that it's coming out is better than not having any news at all.

I doubt it'd work well. But then again, they did re-edit Gundam Unicorn for TV. They also vastly expanded Gundam Narrative's story for its manga adaptation, so I guess it's possible.

Nevertheless, I think this prequel project is also done for sentimental reasons. Being Morosawa's final work and all. For that alone I respect the effort.

Which did not work at that well with those TV edits.

My guess is that this being the only news we got out of it was mostly to do with this conference being centered around broad 50th anniversary plans. And that we'll get more concrete info including the full format and a release date (which will probably be sooner than we think) at the Winter conference

A spoiler tag would have been appreciated, for those of us yet to see Freedom.
