I brought this up a while back about inconsistencies for Encyclopedia pictures having variable quality. Specifically, bad ones that had text/watermark removal, but resulted in smaller sizes that led to aliasing/jaggies.
And so, I'm having to use image links from MAL instead of our own Encyclopedia for Series Discussion threads, because the aliasing/jaggies are so unprofessional looking. Below is an example. The first pic is from MAL, the second is ANN. ![]()
ANN's pic is smaller and considerably more jagged on the line art. You can especially see it on the characters' hair and shingles of the rooftops. This may not bother some, but it bugs the heck out of me. The frustrating part is that some of this season's (Summer 2026) entries are fine (in size), while others are not. I would rather have watermarks and no aliasing/jaggies than the alternative. The trend for these bad conversions seem to be a reduction in pixel size. These Japanese key arts usually have dimensions of 400-500-something x 600 pixels. But the ones that get cleaned are ending up at 350-something x 500 pixels. That's about a 17-18% drop, almost a fifth of the original size. So whoever is converting those pics needs to also NOT shrink the dimensions after removing text/watermarks. |

Honestly I'm not sure if these edits are legal by US standards, but I assume Japanese laws are more strickt on the matter. And well, keeping the original artworks unedited is also a matter of respect (exceptions if they are obviously damaged and need restauration).
anime#32762 This was altered by a 3rd party from the original artwork with several parts removed & cropped - and very likely never approved. The original artwork looks more like a cinematic poster and that's how it should be presented. |
