Another poor girl summoned into that anime hell where you're required to love the least loveable guy in the room just because he's the guy the show is about. Your sacrifice will be remembered friendly handicapped girl #174. They should make a show about the demented cupid that curses the women with these guys. That would probably be more interesting.

1:

Something about the premiere felt rather off to me. A show about a person who has a disability and is making the most of their life can be very inspiring, said character being used to inform the viewer about how it is to live with a disability is also welcome. The big problem is that the first episode did not present Koharu as a character but rather a walking/talking disability solely present to inform Kakeru and others.

It is thankfully not something malicious like ''look at the blind person over there'' but it still felt off, could just be me though.

Sadly, ANN does not provide a "like" button, but if it did I would have liked the hell out of this post. It's been a while since I've wanted to drop kick an anime protagonist in the face repeatedly (while wearing hobnail boots) but this is definitely one of them. Poor girl is already blind... does she really need to be paired with the world's biggest stick in the mud/zero fun guy to boot? I will watch this for her and in the hope he'll die in a fire, soon.

Yeah, as of the first episode the guy sucks. I have already seen The Invisible Man and his Soon to be Bride, and in comparison it feels like how this dude is reacting to stuff is sucking the light of the character for her living with her disability. She couldn't even say she has a disability without him spiralling, something about he couldn't tell someone he was raised in a divorce.

He waited like a good minute before telling her that she dropped her bookmark and walking stick and could get it for her. And he seemed to get annoyed that she didn't know who he is when he said like one word. I don't think he came across as particularly friendly, with apparently socialising at all as good enough.

I had today off and spent it like a true introvert, hiding from any social interaction and the heat outside and burning through new and backlogged anime with pizza and coffee to keep me going. So be warned: I’m not rushing before work or in a daze after work – this post is going to be the full, unfiltered, Edjwald experience.

I read the MC hate in earlier posts and understand it. I *think* based on the summary and the MC's internal thoughts that what we're supposed to be getting/feeling is that the MC is so #$%@ing depressed that he doesn’t even realize he’s depressed.

I see the MC as someone who’s barely existing enough to justify being called alive, and he doesn’t even have the energy to try to resist that fate. He’s slowly sinking down into a quicksand of suck and not even fighting it because when he was very young someone taught him that sudden movements and yelling will just make him sink faster.

I'm not saying that he's suffering from a disability – at least part of the state he's in is because of his own choices and ultimately his own responsibility, and he’s been avoiding that responsibility for a good while.

The summary indicates that one of the themes/points of this anime is that even though it’s not a disability, his blah-ness is even more debilitating to him than her blindness is to her. And that realization is eventually going to make him self-aware enough to feel real shame and make some effort instead of just saying, “Yeah, I’m a loser all right, as expected” and using that as an excuse to be even more of a putz.

And like Iron Wok Jan (I think the only way it's like Iron Wok Jan) expecting us to wait around while this guy gradually becomes less irritating is a bit of a tough sell in a season as packed as this one.

I'm willing to give this anime a little more rope, but that's partly because OPs I like are a kind of kryptonite for me, and this one had my favorite OP of the season so far. I think I’ve even stuck with shows like Flower and Asura and Bartender all the way through because of their OPs, when I might have otherwise dropped them during the slog parts (and there were some slog parts) though I wound up liking both shows en toto.

edited a few times to get the meme in there.

Hmm I see what you're saying there, and I know we want it to feel like the characters are changed by their experiences and have an "arc" as the show goes on, but I feel like shows can get carried away with that idea. Like if arc is good, what's better? All the arc!!!

But there's a limit right? If you try to make the character arc larger by making them so unlikeable at the start that no girl would enjoy being around them then it feels forced and really fake that the poor girls are inexplicably in love with these guys. Plus it's as annoying for us to spend time with these guys as it should've been for the girl, so that's not helping to draw viewers in.

What do I know though. If the market research department says this is the way to go then I look forward to next season's new show: Dr Mengele is happy doing deadly and sadistic medical experiments on concentration camp prisoners...until a cute deaf girl falls head over heels in love with the Doctor of Death (for no reason). Now Mengele is healing the leppers, growing his hair out, and turning water into wine. He'll sacrifice himself to save humanity and become a man worthy of the cute deaf girl's love! Such arc!

By the way does anyone know this bizarrely bad music video from the 1980s? This pervy art school teacher exploits the fact that a blind student can't see him to creepstalk her all over the school.

There is indeed a limit, and it's not as if this is a new anime phenomenon. High school romcom/dramas in particular have lots of examples.

Part of the MC's douchiness gets hidden by the fact that she's blind. She didn't know that the bookmark had fluttered to the ground, for example, so she also didn't know he was sitting there staring at it for way longer than was appropriate. She may have thought he was waiting to see if she would get her collapsible cane because she was close, not realizing that it was on a lower stair. She didn't see any sulky, disgruntled expressions, etc.

Of course, that also causes indignation as a viewer. It's like watching someone get scammed in a way, and I don't think that's the effect the anime was going for. Again, I think what they're *trying* to convey is that he's not being hostile, he's being inert and bogged down in a mode where he's barely making enough effort to feed himself and wipe his butt. It takes a lot to get him to move out of his discomfort zone.

I think the anime is more about him than her. It could be retitled "The semester where I learned how to be more than a fungus."

And it may be that she isn't being scammed. It could be that she's being kind because his voice is so dead, without inflection. This guy seems depressed, why don't I talk to him and try to cheer him up a little? The idea that she's reaching out and helping him instead of him helping her kind of goes along with what I've been saying.

But I'm not trying to defend the anime or argue that people are misguided. The fact that I have to infer all of this means the anime isn't doing a great job, and I may not stick with it myself. I am trying to...I dunno...contextualize it so that it's more accessible if people do want to keep watching it?

I checked Reddit reactions, and people seem into the show, but I cannot stop thinking that this guy is like a wet paper towel in human form. He like groaned every time he was put in a situation to help. How she apparently thinks he is funny is beyond me.

Episode 2

I generally recoil from depictions of torture, but honestly I could happily watch a show consisting of nothing but this dipshit having bamboo shoved under his fingernails or electrodes attached to his gonads. What a useless sack of protoplasm as Ren might say. Everything is a hassle for this guy. "Oh, you want me to accompany you back to a place I'm already going... WHAT AN IMMENSE HASSLE FOR ME!!!" "Oh, you've dropped your cane again... WHAT AN IMMENSE HASSLE FOR ME!!!" And of course dipshit didn't want to recreate the Titanic moment even though there was nobody around. What the holy eff does she see in this steaming turd? As I said before, I'm watching this because of her, but his presence is a form of torture for me.

Yeah, the mc is making it a tad hard at times to enjoy the otherwise many sweet moments. Tastes differ I guess, she sees something attractive in him to basically already be ready to couple up.

Yeah, the putzocity was off the charts. Nice OP or not, getting what the author is *trying* to do or not, I'll give this two and half episodes to show some progress instead of three, cos I'm not sure I could sit through another full course of observing Numbnuts in his native habitat.

Liked the piano solo though.

Editing this in...I looked Harumi Fuuki up on Itunes, and she has a lot of stuff. I particularlry liked the scores she wrote for something called My Love Mix-up.

If you are on a ship and someone asks you to recreate the Titanic scene, you are recreating the Titanic scene.

...unless of course you are Mister "Zomg, I'm totally a child of divorce and all human elements have been snuffed from my vapid personality."
