I too have a local-ish tea shop that does weeb pop-up events!
And when I was at AX this year, I was super impressed by both the grassroots alternative artist alley that folks set up in a parking lot near Little Tokyo, and the multiple permanent shops nearby that consisted entirely of rotating AA artists. Granted, these all have the implicit "buy something" vibe about them too, but they gave me hope for more of these sort of scrappy, fan-created spaces. I think we'll naturally see more and more of them bloom as the officially sanctioned con spaces get more expensive and commercialized. It's a good silver lining. |

For the first fifteen or so years of this century, if there was a late night, otaku-oriented anime that I enjoyed watching through, most often, less than official means, the chances were pretty high that it would get an official physical release in North America (with autumn 2007's Minami-ke being a major outlier from the mid-2000s moé golden age that still hasn't got a DVD or BluRay release over here). It's really only over the past ten years that new anime I've enjoyed, starting with winter 2017's Gabriel DropOut, has almost entirely remained streaming-only. It's not exactly coincidental that streaming also killed my local bricks-and-mortar anime store just before Covid hit. |

I think it might refer to the Cartoon/Fantasy Organization? Basically the beginning of American (and furry!) fandom. |

It’s become increasingly clear that Sony bought and shutdown Right Stuf not to improve the CR store but as part of their overall plan to eliminate physical media. This is especially true since Right Stuf wasn’t just the prime distributor in North America for their discs but also for Sentai and the independents like Discotek and Animego. Now Sony have all but removed all independents from the CR store and I imagine Sentai will be next.
Hopefully someone will appear to replace Right Stuf. Until then we’re stuck with wherever we can get our discs (I’m a CR member but the service is so bad that I long ago stopped buying from the CR store). |

I remember being a fan in the early 2000s going to the mall and such I still go to shops like barnes and noble and love seeing teens there browsing the manga. I was an early member of a local anime club that met at a local comics shop and later libraries so that is always a good idea-made many friends I still have today. We now meet up at a local japanese arcade
