Hey, everybody. I'm in the market for some anime box sets I was able to find for pretty decent prices. These are series I heard good things about, which gives me a valid reason to check them out. I was wondering if anyone has heard of/seen any of these series and whether or not you would recommend them?

-Gokudo: Collection Extraordinare. Can be found for around $45-$60. I don't know much about this series, but it intrigues me, because of the description of the main character's behavior. I also heard it's really funny, and since I like comedy anime, this is a series I'm watching out for.

-Saber Marionette J: The Ultimate Collection. Can be found for $120 with free shipping at Deep Discount DVD. If I seem to recall, and correct me if I'm wrong, but in this collection, you get all 25 episodes of Saber Marionette J, all 6 OVA episodes of Saber Marionette J Again, and all 26 episodes of Saber Marionette J to X, which together, would add up to a grand total of 57 episodes. That, IMO, sounds like a pretty awesome deal, considering that most box sets around that price range, even higher only gives you 26 episodes.

-Blue Seed: Perfect Collection. Deep Discount DVD once again steals the crown of having the best price, at $36 with free shipping. At $36 for 26 episodes, thats a really good deal. By the way, in case anyone's wondering, the price I'm referring to is the legit version, not the bootleg. I was actually surprised to find an anime series, legit, for this cheap.

-Legend of Himiko Collection. Can be found for $42 with free shipping at Deep Discount DVD. Like Gokudo, I don't know much about this series, but at $42 for a box set, I would still like to check it out.

I figured that with all the new anime coming out, I could get some old ones for decent prices. So, what do you guys think? Did I make good choices, or bad choices? Any thoughts/opinions on the series I picked would be greatly appreciated. Of course, anyone is welcome to recommend other series that you think I may be interested in, assuming I could get a good deal out of it. If it helps, I'm only interested in comedy for the time being. Yeah, I know it sounds like I'm being freugal, but hey, I can't help it. I like good deals. Sorry if this post sounds a little long-winded, it sure feels like I posted more than I should have. Oh, well. Thanks for your time, everybody.

Do you own the whole set of Berserk? That's a very good fantasy epic anime (26 eps, BTW) and sold for about $100-110 dollars, depending upon where you look. Saber Marionette J is good; I bought the series after I found out it wouldn't get shown on Toonami (gender aspect) and didn't get it for that cheap. (something like $170) If you're looking for good deals, eBay can be a good place to look, if you don't mind wading through endless pages of bootlegs. I got my Evangelion on eBay for $90 (wasn't in the best shape externally, but the DVDs themselves were fine.) Being interested in comedy, I would suggest FLCL (Randomity from Gainax, 6 eps total, no box set, 3 DVDs for $20-30 apiece) to you, or maybe some Excel Saga (rapid-fire comedy full of random culture references and a preponderence of "in-jokes")

BTW, unless you're posting your Master's Thesis or something, I don't think your going to post "too much" Wink (unless it rambles or it's spam)

Blue Seed is a good buy, I myself picked up a copy of the perfect collection last summer. ADV threw in some nice extras as well, and given that you like anime with a bit of humour in it I think you'll enjoy it (especially the Omake theatre).

I'd like to recommend Fruits Basket as well, granted its not pure comedy its a great slice of life anime with a story that makes for some very comical moments. Its about a family thats cursed by the creatures of the chinese Zodiac and they transform whenever hugged a person of the opposite sex. You can get it at a pretty handsome price as well given Funimations most reasonable $20 a dvd at only 4dvds containing all 26 episodes.

Ah, yes, FLCL. I do plan on getting that series, just not now. I'll look into Berserk, and Excel Saga as well. For the mean time, I'm looking for series that are sold as boxed sets, especially some older ones that may have gone down in price a little. As for your suggestion about eBay, I'm afraid that's out of the question. Reason being is I only have a VISA Check Card, and as far as I can tell, eBay only accepts credit cards. I may apply for a credit card sometime in the near future, but for now, I'll stick with the check card. Besides, I found the Evangelion box set at Deep Discount DVD for $102 with free shipping, so I may not have to even bother with eBay at all. Boy, I love good deals, don't you?

How exactly would I go about finding out if what I bought is a bootleg? I've had the CB box set for some time and I got it from ebay. Everything seems perfectly "stock" but I question the 32 dollar price tag.

You can use a visa sharecheck card on e-bay or paypal (powered by e-bay) rather, at least I know that I do. Just set it as a credit card, since you don't have an actual visa account per-se it'll just deduct from your checking.

Deep Discound is a great site to pick up anime if you don't mind waiting for its arrival, their shipping time is considerably longer than their competitors (3-4 weeks in some cases within the continental US). However, I guess they don't charge you for shipping so you can't hardly complain.

Basically, 95% of stuff on Ebay are bootlegs. Your Bebop set is a bootleg. I think the only boxsets of Bebop were the limited box set for over $100 and the Amazon box set thing that was $98 or something. Buy from legit sellers, like AnimeNation or something to guarantee you're not getting a bootleg.

Their shipping varies wildly... I've ordered from them about five times, and of those times, I've usually gotten the in stock items in about a week. Out of stock items have taken up to a month, though....

If its only 3 dvds, then its going to be a HK dvd (bootleg). Thats usually the most noticable tell-tale sign, and if it was a CB box set... (at 32 dollars) there is probably no doubt that its a HK bootleg. Seeing that the domestic box set runs for far more 140+

What you have is a bootleg. 30 dollar box sets generally mean bootlegs, also it's not hard to check the disc count. I assume yours is three disc, where as CB is a six disc series. Also, I know ebay really works for some people, but it's better to not take the risk at all and get your anime from places like TRSI, DDD, or Anime Nation.

Good deals are great, especially when you're almost as broke as a college student. Wink Um, as for eBay, I wasn't talking about buying it direct from eBay itself, I was referring to actually bidding (or my favorite, the "buy it now") Since those are people selling it, you can often pay them in multiple ways (PayPal <what you're talking about>, personal check, cash <not recommended>, or money order <my preference>) Berserk doesn't exactly fit your preference of comedy (unless you count the outtakes); it's a very dark and bloody anime. Most of the comedy I own is farily recent, such as Martian Successor Nadesico and Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Tenchi is kind of getting there in years, so its price may be pretty reasonable. If I can scrounge up any more series, I'll post them. Happy bargain hunting! Very Happy

Do your homework. Check Amazon.com for info on the sets... another good source is AnimeonDVD... find out how many discs are in the legit set, how long the legit set is, and what extras it might come with. Check the cover art.

Shop smart, and you'll never carry home a bootleg from eBay. It's just like shopping in the real world... do your research, or you're gonna get ripped off.

Roughly 80-90% of my anime collection has come from eBay... and I've only gotten two bootlegs (went up recently), both times the seller lied to me outright about the items. Yeah, sometimes you're just gonna get ripped off anyway....

edited for spelling and UBB....

Thanks to all, I have to say I thought it was too good to be true. But damn, the real thing is expensive, and it is 3 discs. Sorry is my pirating ways have offended anyone, seriously.

Price is a huge factor. If it seems too cheap, it probably is. For a series you haven't heard of, check a site like AnimeNation to see the legit disc count. For example, Trigun is an 8-DVD set. Anything less is a bootleg. We had a thread about this some time ago, which I'll try to find. Oh, and if it came from China or some other non-Japan country, it's bootleg. *Region-free and Chinese subtitles are most certainly bootlegs as well*
