I noticed that Misty's Run has a separate entry than from the original Gunsmith Cats and is listed as a sequel. Fair enough. The Riding Bean anime is listed as only related to Gunsmith Cats (OAV). This is correct because they happen in the same universe as Riding Bean, which in turn is directly adapted from the Gunsmith Cats manga. However, the Riding Bean anime is directly adapted from the Riding Bean manga, which doesn't seem to be listed. Although that manga happens in the same universe as Gunsmith Cats, there are key differences. Case in point. Rally has long blond hair, blue eyes, pale skin and is an English women(with US citizenship). All around she is portrayed as a much more glamorous figure and there is no mention of Minnie May. The Riding Bean manga was never finished, but it was publised in 1989 by Comics Noisy. Given the fact that the Rally that we see in the OAV is also blond and more debonair, She's not a bounty hunter, and both plots involve transporting a young girl, I think we can only assume that this is of a more direct relation to the Riding Bean manga. Which was made before the OAV. And Gunsmith Cats the Manga was started after the OAV.
From what I understand there was some sort of falling out between companies, which is why a new story line was created. Nevertheless, shouldn't the orginal storyline also be mentioned as a seperate adaptation? Instead of just simply related? And should there be an entry made for Riding Bean the manga? Just wondering, as I think it would explain some of the key differences between the two OAVs, as well as point to the direct storyline much better and why that is. Sorry so long.

The first moment I saw this "Misty's Run" it immediately reminded me Peach Girl: Change of Heart and other similar titles: US licensee decided to create a new series or single out a few chapters for whatever reason.
I don't really care about their respective stories. However, since Riding Bean OVA came out way earlier than both GSC manga and anime then it should not be branched out from the latter; it should be the other way around.
Done, but it took me three hours Googling to confirm facts (if there was any). First, there was no "Comics Noisy" but Monthly Comic Noizy (月刊コミックノイズィ Gekkan Komikku Noizui). Second, Riding Bean has never published as tankōbon; rather, it scattered here and there. The "tankōbon" published in 1989 was actually a "film comic" i.e. ani-manga like Spirited Away. Third, I'm still not sure the relationship between Riding Bean and novel Crash Chase by Masaya Takahashi (高橋 昌也). Wikipedia and some other sources said Riding Bean was originally a compilation of illustrations for the novel, but I couldn't find any additional information regarding this lead. Last but not least, Sonoda doesn't have a well-organized fansite like Nausicaa.net or sTwo...

Wow, sounds like this one was a doozy. Sorry about that.
This was the main thing I saw that needed to be changed. Since most people have probably seen the anime, but it was listed before as related to the Gunsmith Cats OAV, which I think was incorrect. By default then I think the Riding Bean manga needed to be created. Really sorry about that, it sounds like it was a real pain in the butt. Thank you again for taking the time to do it though, and straightening out some of my wrong facts!!!! I believe the reason it was never published as a tankōbon is because it only appeared in four issues of Monthly Comic Noizy. I am guessing that before a fifth one came Sonoda and Noizy had their big "fall out". Though I can't confirm that. |
