How could Gamabunta have possibly been useful in what we've seen so far? Large summons like that are intended for other large summons.

lots of places... it doesn't matter the size, if he uses it on a normal opponent, Gamabunta can just crush the enemy.

spoiler[in the filler episodes, use Gamabunta to escape from that trap they're all in. he also could have used it against the fight against that Akatsuki member Deidara who was flying on that clay bird. Gamabunta could have reached Deidara in the air... ]

Is it still filler? And if so for how long? I'm planning on saving up episodes but I don't want to net 30 filler episodes as well.

No clue when it'll end. Might be another couple episodes, might be five, might be ten, hard to say. IT's actually not that bad though, about Bleach level in terms of filler quality. perhaps even D.Gray Man, rather than previous Naruto filler quality. The filler villains and support characters actually have some weight to them, and the story loosely relates to the subsequent manga arc.

Hmmm. It's disappointing that as soon as I decide "Hey, maybe just building up a few episodes will combat the glacial slowness of the show!" they launch into another endless filler stream. I should just go to scanlations. Hell, even the translated manga is only about one or two volumes off from being ahead of the anime.

I just watched the last three episodes today(post last hour long special) and I really do have to say, it's improved dramatically. I don't even care that it's filler right now. I hate to see Naruto doing the same things over and over. The story(and I'm guessing originating from the manga) is going way too indepth with elemental techniques. It just feels like something of this nature should have been more indepth at the beginning or left out entirely.

But even after all that, is it just me, or is the animation MUCH better than most of the canon material?(The TERRIBLE clone fights, Kakashi & Naruto in that damn canyon, etc) I'm liking the few characters and villains and am honestly intrigued of what exactly is going on. I hope their goals are a little bit more than "we want to take over the country with power which will, in turn, better itself" though.

The manga doesn't really obsess over it but it does come up from time to time from here in. It does pretty much consistantly match up with what we do know of the series though. The only slight inconsistancy is that Naruto would get so far into his training without having this sort of thing being explained to him. I would think this is 101 stuff.

Exactly.

You don't play an rpg and on the final boss "Oh, he's weak to fire magic! That means you should use water/ice on him!" This should be tutorial stuff.

It's just very odd and we've already left the "ninja/stealth" thing behind a few hundred episodes ago, but I hate adding in new ideas like this into the fighting styles. He's been training to be a ninja forever, even though he was terrible as a kid(and you could argue that he still is..) but it's annoying to see him go "oh WOW, you use Wind chakra too? Amazing!". And of course the enemy he fights has a thing for using all different elements.

I mean in the fight with the Third and Orochi, they used elemental powers and combined them often. But it was just because they trained to use the techniques. Having an affinity seems like an after thought just thrown in the mix.

Oh, and the 4 baddies, how many are guys? I thought at first the person with long black hair was female, but then started to change my view as I watched and almost sure it's a guy now. Maybe it's one of Haku's parents Rolling Eyes

Are you guys talking about it pertaining to the filler or to the main plot? Because in the sense of the main plot it's always made sense to me, and quite frankly I find it hard to understand why it wouldn't. I mean first of all, you claim that he's been training to be a ninja forever but honestly, if you look at it he really hasn't in comparison to some of the older and more advanced ninja, like Kakkashi or the 3rd or whoever else (became a Genin at the age of 12, is at this point is only about 14 or 15, still has been too busy with other things that he hasn't had the opportunity to move up to the Chuunin level even).

Of course I highly doubt they'd teach them anything like that at the academy Wink and it's been clearly stated throughout the series that nature manipulation chakra is not a beginner level thing. Remember when Sasuke used his fireball jutsu on Kakkashi in the bell training at the very beginning of the series? Kakkashi's exact shocked words were "But that's a nature technique, how does he know how to do that!? That's WAY too advanced for him!" which the level of power as such that has been displayed thought the series pertaining to nature manipulation techniques I'd say kind of tells you exactly why it is. Wink So I'm certain they don't teach it to Gennin either.

And the fact of the matter is also that it's been clearly stated, as well as shown through the sciences of it's mastery, just how incredibly hard it is to master nature manipulation in the first place, that's why Naruto is having such a hard time with it as pretty much anyone would. And I think the only reason why they're teaching it to him now is because he's just barely gotten to the point where he's a Jounin-esque ninja right now. In fact was it not Kakkashi that said "this next bit of training would probably make you even stronger than myself?"

Now case in point I will say that there have indeed been Genin that have mastered nature manipulation (of course Sasuke doesn't count, Choji has his earth manipulation technique, Shikamaru his "shaddow" manipulation technique) but if you really look at those who have, Shikamaru's technique I believe has been said is under a different category altogether, not to mention he's as much a genius prodigy as he is anyways, Sasuke has his sharingan plus that whole sequence where he was trying to prove himself to his dad, and Choji has the same master as Shikamaru, which tells me that Asuma must be really good at teaching it or something. But other than that I can't think of any other Genin that was mentioned who has.

I never disputed people have been using "elemental" attacks all through out the anime. But it has been 250? 260? episodes or something and they go "by the way, your own chakra can have an affinity, and yours is wind, apparently". It just feels amateurish to throw in stupid elemental affinities(which I could have done without seeing as EVERY other japanese anime and game has them) and just leave them as elemental techniques people learned. I mean really, Azuma has wind on his blades? Ok, then what is Kabuto using when he makes his hand into a type of scalpel/knife, wind as well? I don't know, but I wondered if those techniques were explained in the past as just "using chakra as a blade" or if they were left unexplained for something to come up such as now.

And he has not been training forever, no, but he was with Kakkashi for quite awhile and supposedly been training for three years now with Jiraiya(though of course, he is still a terrible fighter/ninja)

I am not arguing Naruto shouldn't have known about it in training, I'm saying it feels childish to add all of this in the anime at this point. Whether we're following him or not(and thus, not learning about it till he does), it feels way past where this should have been introduced. In the end, I'm sure it's just another "godlike technique" he'll learn, use effectively for one arc, and then "spam" like he does with Rasengan now in all the fillers and even canon till he can get something better.

You see, this is exactly why people shouldn't just base their opinion of the series simply off of the anime. Too much filler, too much dragging out that it "feels" like what it's not supposed to......... I don't know if it's because I read the manga first or that I got through the whole first part of the series in a matter of months (minus the filler of course) or what, but it's just always made perfectly okay sense to me. Of course you've got to remember that Naruto is a pretty chilish series anyways, so if you don't like childish stuff then this series is probably not for you. Wink So maybe that's why he did it that way, I don't know. All I know for sure is that yeah, this series does indeed follow Naruto, and in fact pretty much everything we've learned about the world we've learned through his eyes. This series is indeed called "Naruto" after all. Wink You don't have to like it if you don't want to of course, but that's how it is, and if you don't like it, then maybe once again my friend this series is not for you.

Emphasis on:

Maybe so but Kakkashi, like the other Jounin leaders, taught everyone, including Naruto, at the same pace. It's as I've said before, the only other Genin to have learned nature manipulation at such an early age each had their own special occasion. Naruto's just one of the other average Joe Genin who wouldn't be learning such an advanced thing until later. I've even explained why it makes sense to me that it'd be as advanced as it is as well...... did you even read the entirety of my post?

As for his training with Jiraiya, I honestly have no clue why you think he's still a terrible fighter even after training with him for so long. More filler problems maybe? I mean, it's pretty much been explained in it's entirety up to this point exactly what he's been doing with him, and I'd say he's more than showed off how much smarter, faster, and stronger he's gotten over those 3 or so years. He doesn't make the same kind of stupid mistakes that he used to in battle, and he's better utilized the usage of his fighting techniques as well. I assume of course that the biggest reason for why he's mostly been learning this type of stuff over that time period is because of the sheer amount of focus that's been going into him learning how to control the Kyuubi's powers, so maybe they didn't even feel the need to teach him any techniques, I don't know. But of course now that that's not an option anymore, maybe that's why they're teaching it to him just now. The timing seems right enough for it, that's for sure.

Really though, you have to consider your options more rather than just jump to conclusions. You may be able to do that with other shounen series but Naruto isn't the kind of shounen series where you can do that as easily.

I don't know what I've said negative about the series other than the absolute lowest points EVERYONE hates about it. What's with the attitude?

I don't even really get the point of the last post so I'll just let it all go.

Maybe not against the series as a whole, but the specific thing you're not liking about it you're saying is very "childish" in a negative sense, like you don't like childish stuff or something. Basically my point is that if you don't like childish stuff, well Naruto is a pretty childish series is it not? So maybe it's not for you. Plus that and maybe the only reason why you're having problems with it so much is because you're opinion is solely based off of the anime, not the manga.

What is there not to understand? I felt like I was being pretty clear with everything I was saying, but oh well........

Finally giving an explanation for element affinity (which has always existed, they haven't been yelling out "water style" and "fire style" to be random) helps to add some variety to upcoming characters. It isn't childish, it helps add some much needed complexity to the dynamics of jutsu and the ninja that use them. For example we've got the lady in the filler arc that uses multiple elements which should be causing a lot of people wonder just how that's possible. There's a new canon villain coming up after the filler that also has multiple attributes. I wont spoil it, but it certainly makes for a much more interesting character knowing the importance of elemental affinity than if he was just randomly using multiple attacks.

It's no secret that Naruto is relatively clueless and a tough kid to teach so it makes sense that he wouldn't know about elemental affinity and that no one would bother teaching him about it until it's really necessary. I will say this, it wasn't by chance that Jiraiya taught a wind element to Naruto, but I won't spoil it. The kid could barely understand spinning, you really think Jiraiya is going to explain elements to him?

You know, you'd think by now they'd figure out that Naruto is a better book learner than a visual learner. I mean they tried to teach him shadow clones for so long with him failing every time, but he spends a couple hours with a forbidden scroll and he can do it better than anyone alive. Next time they want to teach him something they should just write on a scroll titled "TOP SECRET".
