"After lying low since the massive success of Cowboy Bebop, director Shinichiro Watanabe is resurfacing this year with a brand-new action series. Watanabe claims that Samurai Champloo-featuring the character designs of Kazuto Nakazawa (Kacho Oji and El Hazard)-has been influenced by everything from modern hip-hop music to classic black-and-white samurai movies. It should be a lot more interesting than your average samurai series, and Geneon Entertainment already has an American release in the works." -OPM
Wow, sounds like this is going to be a series to look out for. Hopefully it comes to the states as soon as possible. I know i'll be looking forward to this one. |

Wow. This should be a great series. Especially if Watanabe is going to be involved in it. A samurai series sounds good to me.

I just hope this whole "hip-hop/samurai film fusion" concept doesn't turn out to be an animated version of that crappy Kung Faux show on Fuse. Nothing against hip-hop, but just about every time I've seen it mixed with anything involving feudal Japan, it's come out looking downright dismal.

I mean i'm not big on hip-hop at all. But maybe it's like referring to how the characters in Cowboy Bebop had a taste for jazz, it'll be like that but the characters might have a taste for hip-hop...or not. Well, I guess we just have to wait and see, but I doubt Shinichiro Watanabe would let a minor detail like music ruin his entire series.

I'm really looking forward to the outcome of this anime. Just to hear that it is directed by Shinichiro Watanabe is enough to turn heads. It will be a strange clash of east meets west (in the context of feudal japan and hip-hop), one of which will hopefully meet our expectations and not totally ruin the show.

Considering that Cowboy Bebop made me appreciate Jazz, which I hate otherwise, maybe Samarai Champloo will make me like Hip-Hop.

Hip-hop turned me off Mtv and music in general so here is hoping that it won't do the same with Champloo.

In reference to the celebrated Cowboy Bebop, the appreciation of jazz is an acquired taste. And jazz is what I enjoy. Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Ellington, Marsalis, Brubeck, Getz and all the other greats. No offence to those who love hip-hop but to me, it is the ultimate personification of unsolicited indoctrination of all that is not music propagated by MTV and every other radio station.
I will keep my expectations low for the release of Samurai Champloo afraid that the hip-hop element will act as a turn-off. Music besides, the animation looks gorgeous. Should be great, nonetheless. |

Yeah. I kinda have the same thing going, only it's more of the pop star/American Idol thing that really bugs me. In the past, I used to like hip-hop every now and then. I don't have a lot of favorites, but even today, I still only care for a few particular artists/groups like DMX, Outkast, or Busta Rhymes. Other than that, I don't really listen to any other hip-hop/rap. What's the setting of this show anyway? If it's feudal Japan, I seriously hope they don't try to put hip-hop in it. I loved Bebop's music and revere it as my favorite soundtrack. I think it works because there's a lot of jazz that's upbeat or slow when it needs to be. And since Bebop had a lot of those moments, Yoko Kano-sama's score fit perfectly, in my opinion. Does anyone know who's doing the music for Samurai Champloo? |

The clothes the characters are wearing would suggest feudal Japan but you never know. I think that other than the use of Hip-Hop music in the show the characters will also use Hip-Hop "moves" when fighting. Seriously though, why Hip-Hop? What the hell was Watanabe-san thinking? I mean I get the use of noire and Jazz in Bebop since he is a fan of the genre, but a Hip-Hop fan? That one I would never have guessed! |

Yeah, this is sounding like those damned hip-hop music videos I referenced earlier... The "Ah slice da foo wit mah samarai quickness and kung fu his ass in 2 chop suey" variety.

 You described it perfectly.
I've seen that show Kung Faux and it totally put me off the first time I watched it. It's enough watching dubbed chinese movies as it is, but listening to it in hip-hop was just weird. Plus the dialogue was...um...well look above. I'm not much of a hip-hop fan, but maybe, just maybe, Watanabe will make it work with samurai.

I think the hip-hop will be implemented like the jazz was in Cowboy Beebop. In Cowboy Beebop they didn't have jazzy moves they yelled out after which they pummled the bad guy with a trumpet or saxaphone. I don't think that it will be too over the top, and although it won't be as good as jazz and outer space, I'm definately interested in seeing how his new project turns out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I saw a still of SC and in it the characters were in a crowded metropolitan environment, implying a present-day setting. That would certainly work better with a Hip-Hop theme. |

Color me perplexed. I'll never understand why the vast majority of anime fans have such a hatred of hip-hop and rap. I always found it a cathardic, poetic, and creatively rich experience (As I do anime). At least no one has delved into the territory of "Rappers are no talent hacks". 'Cause then you'd really see a rant
 .
Anyway, don't dismiss this just because it has some trappings of Hip Hop involved. Watanabe is a master of his craft, have some faith in his skill. Who knows, you might like it more than you thought possible. And if anything, I'll bet it becomes many fans "guilty pleasure".
