15-14 in what is surely THE biggest blowout of this tournament.
One more vote for Ed and Al? Anybody? Heck with it, this has been done in the past, even if it is a little sneaky. I'd be willing to change my D Final vote if someone changes their C Final vote. I don't know if it will help, but I'm not horribly attached to either duo in D Group, and there have been many good supporting arguments for Aoi and Kaoru that make them more viable contenders than I had previously assumed, so I wouldn't feel bad about it. Would anyone like to chime in a vote? Or trade one with me? |

quickvote before the close
C: Ed & Al By just a little bit. The entire series was based on their relationship and support for each other, and having been through immense losses together, they make for a great duo. D: Yukino & Souichiro Aoi and Kaoru were way too traditional and it almost felt kind of forced sometimes, the latter is a way more natural progression and relationship IMO. |

Group Finals C+D are now closed.
frentymon, you lucky bastard, you must have cast those votes during the couple of minutes I was tallying up the previous page, because your post wasn't there when I started looking. Still, since I hadn't posted a "close" notice by that point, they count. And that causes a problem, people. Thanks to the (literal) last-minute surge of votes for Ed and Al, we have a 15-15 tie between them and Kurau/Christmas in Group C. That means we'll have a Final Five instead of Final Four. Some might argue that's only fitting, since those two have been the two strongest performers all tournament, but that also sets up what I regard as a worst-case three-way battle to advance a duo to the championship. How much will the presence of Yukino/Arima alter the struggle between the other two, I wonder? In Group D, in the end Yukino/Arima breezed to a 20-10 win over Aoi and Kaoru, although it was much closer than that up until the final few hours. (The spread was as close as four votes as recently as 13 hours prior to the cut-off.) Because of the unexpected business on the tie, and the fact that we have to re-pair up the ties immediately, the start of the Final Five may be delayed by a few hours. It will include a special write-up on all five of the final competitors in addition to a summarized listing of the video clips for all five. And now that I have the official business out of the way, I feel a need to address certain points brought up in two of the late posts, since those points are still going to be relevant next round.
As do Kurau and Christmas in the later stages of the show.
What the heck do the commercial advertisements have to do with the relationship of Kurau and Christmas as a duo? So you're punishing them because ADV decided to market this as an action series rather than the more relationship-oriented piece that it is? That's absurd, as it has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual series content or their status as a duo.
Um, they've gotten plenty of love. They've been the #1 performer this whole tournament, so don't try to make out like they're underappreciated underdogs.
Change the bold part to "With a lot of exceptions" and I might agree with you. Most of the best scenes between the two involve no action at all, and late in the series Christmas is a nearly equal contributor to the fight scenes.
See above note. As Christmas realizes her power and becomes more fully used to the human world she stands on nearly even footing with Kurau late in the series and is indispensable for keeping Kurau going later on. The final episode, where (MAJOR SPOILER) spoiler[the initial Kurau/Christmas relationship reverses] might also change your mind on this point. And whatever else you want to say about Ed and Al, there's one place where they cannot equal Kurau and Christmas, and that's the point the makes the difference for me: the palpable emotion within the relationship. Yes, it's definitely evident that Ed and Al love each other as brothers, but do you feel it like you do with Kurau and Christmas? (Most who have watched Kurau Phantom Memory all the way through will probably understand what I mean here.) |

Know nothing and deduce that? How, by watching the most misleading trailer in the history of anime? Anyone who recommends Phantom Memory to a friend is doing so because of the emotional and heart-rending relationship between Kurau and Christmas, not the action sequences. I don't know that I have much more to say about Kurau and Christmas, because Key already said it all. Dismissing Christmas as baggage that Kurau has to constantly rescue makes it seem like you haven't watched the series. People complaining about the constant one-way find, protect, save relationship are forgetting (or haven't seen) all the little quiet moments between the two. Ed and Al may show how much they care about each other by more often facing death and dismemberment, but watching Kurau and Christmas wait tables together in a restaurant in a backwater town, one can feel how much they care about each other. As for the Elrics being so much more dynamic, um, really? Ed being constantly bull-headed and Al pretty much always giving in to him is dynamic? They're not a bad duo, certainly, but the video clip last round leaves me scratching my head. The brothers are in a childish tiff over a major decision in their quest. It's something that, even if they aren't necessarily calm about it, they should be discussing and evaluating. Instead, they smack each other around, then go away to sulk for a while. Eventually, Ed realizes they need to move on and, because he knows his brother so well and knows exactly where to find Al, goes to the river to end their fight. At this point, Al caves in and agrees to Ed's decision. How does that come through as teamwork?
You sure you don't mean upset instead of blowout? Even then, that's a questionable statement. What about Yukino and Souichiro coming back across two rounds to defeat Haruhi and Kyon? Or the highly unexpected victory of Nanoka and Kohsiro over Simon and Kamina? Perhaps Yusuke and Keiko defeat of Arika and Sergei at a rate of 4 votes to 1 when 75% of the minigame participants expected the match to go the other way? |

A tie, huh? Thirty votes is far better than we have been getting lately, but I am pleasantly surprised at how civil it was. So much at stake, and people refrained from utterly going berserk at one another. Was expecting more impassioned arguments though; I suppose that most of us realised it was futile.
Well bring on semifinals, I say. This should be good. |

Tournament Semifinals are now closed.
I will post the actual pairings in a minute, but first: The Complete Final Five Guide Jinto and Lafiel Series: Crest of the Stars, Banner of the Stars, Banner of the Stars II Nature of Relationship: Friends, very vaguely romantic Background: Jinto became Abh nobility when his home planet was subsumed into the spacefaring Humankind Empire Abh, a process which made his father, the planet’s President, the planet’s noble administrator. At age 17, while in transport to requisite Abh Star Forces training, Jinto meets Lafiel, an Abh pilot trainee his own age whom he does not realize at first is an Imperial Princess, granddaughter to the current Empress, and thus a prime candidate to eventually be Empress herself. They quickly strike up a casual friendship, once which becomes much closer when they are forced to rely heavily on each other for mutual survival as a war springs up around them. (This is the balance of events in Crest.) Three years later they are reunited as captain and bridge officer on Lafiel’s first command during the war’s second wave (Banner), where their status as nobility also sometimes has them functioning cooperatively in administrative roles (Banner II). Evidence: Before the crap hits the fan, the two talk comfortably and at length. During their flight from the opening combat and efforts to reach a safe haven they must work very cooperatively and take turns saving each other; Lafiel in a more physical sense, Jinto by preventing the hotheaded Lafiel from carrying out situations where she might end up needlessly fighting to the death (although he does physically protect her at one point, too). The strength of the bond they form during this time is such that Lafiel later specifically requests Jinto as one of her bridge officers and Jinto is the only person outside of family whom Lafiel allows to call her just “Lafiel” instead of by a title. (This is a level of intimacy about equivalent to addressing someone in Japanese without an honorific.) Jinto is the only person who can comfortably talk casually with the infamously temperamental Abh princess and chooses to devote his life to helping her succeed. Although there are never clear indications of romance between the two, Lafiel does act in a jealous manner when she sees Jinto commiserating with another Abh girl at one point, is never more anguished than when duty forces her to leave Jinto behind at another point, and even temporarily sets aside her military career to go back and retrieve Jinto and accompany him to his home planet, which involves an especially emotional reunion. Why They Should Win: Chemistry. Moreso than any other duo in the Final Five, these two just click together. They are completely independent of one another, and yet the comfort zone between the two of them, despite Lafiel’s prickly personality, is unmistakable and their commitment to each other wholly believable. That many fans would dearly love to see them progress in a romantic direction may be the greatest testament to their quality as a duo. Video Clip Links: Clip #1 Clip #2 Clip #3 *NEW*Clip #4 Sousuke Sagara and Kaname Chidori Series: Full Metal Panic!, FMP! Fumoffu?, Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid Nature of Relationship: Protector/protectee, comedy duo, romantic Background: High school student Kaname is suspected of being one of the Whispered, an extremely rare breed who possess innate scientific knowledge well beyond normal human capability. For this reason secret organization MITHRIL dispatches one of their top mecha pilots, the teenage soldier Sousuke, into her high school to secretly protect her, an assignment which he is called on to do for real on more than one occasion. Kaname soon learns the truth and finds both his overprotectiveness and utter inability to smoothly integrate into high school life to be infuriating, but over time gradually comes to depend on him, too. Over time Sousuke also clearly comes to value Kaname beyond just as the subject of a job. Evidence: For all of the frustrations Sousuke puts her through, innumerable scenes across all three series indicate that Kaname definitely holds a spot in her heart for him, and Sousuke shows on multiple occasions (especially in TSR) that his care and concern for Kaname goes above and beyond professional duty. Nothing gets Sousuke riled up more than Kaname being put in danger or the threat of being permanently separated from her; he ultimately is even willing to compromise his soldierly duty over her, something that would be unthinkable in other circumstances. With no one else but Kaname is he comfortable enough to let his guard down, as a crucial hair-cutting scene in TSR clearly shows. Kaname, for her part, comes to feel insecure when Sousuke isn’t around, which would otherwise be out of character for her. Although Sousuke does most of the fighting, Kaname provides a key assist and inspiration on multiple occasions. Why They Should Win: Comedy antics. Although some of Sousuke and Kaname’s appeal lies in the ever-present suggestions of romantic tension and commitment, they can’t win on that alone. The marvelously funny way they play off of each other in comedy situations (as particularly demonstrated in Fumoffu), and how effectively that mixes with the hints of romance, is what separates them from the other contenders. Unlike the others, they offer strength as a duo on multiple fronts. Video Clip Links: Clip #1 Clip #2 Clip #3 *NEW* Clip #4 Edward and Alphonse Elric Titles: The series Fullmetal Alchemist and the movie Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala Nature of Relationship: Brothers. Background: At a young age, alchemy prodigies Ed and Al Elric, brothers who differ in age by a year, lost their mother. In a desperate attempt to bring her back to life, they use forbidden alchemy to attempt to resurrect her, only to have the attempt go horribly awry. Al lost his body and Ed lost a leg and an arm in trying to save Al by bonding his soul to a suit of armor. Over the next five years they intensely study alchemy, with Ed winning a job as a State Alchemist, and go on a journey in search of the legendary Philosopher’s Stone, which they believe will allow them to restore their bodies. Evidence: As partners in crime (so to speak), the brothers always travel together, usually fight together, and always watch each other’s backs. They spar together in friendly fashion, save each other, argue and make up with each other, and sometimes insult or make fun of each other, but they never lose sight of their mutual goals and never forget that they are brothers, and that family comes before anything else. The brotherly love they hold for each other remains evident throughout the series and advancement of years. Why They Should Win: Familial commitment. You will not find a stronger or more convincing example of a sibling bond anywhere in anime. Video Clip Links: Clip #1 Clip #2 Clip #3 *NEW* Clip #4 Kurau and Christmas Series: Kurau Phantom Memory Nature of Relationship: Bonded Pair of alien/human hybrids. Background: In 2100 A.D., an accident at her father’s experimental energy source lab on the Moon causes a binary alien life form named Rynax to bond with and physically restructure 12-year-old Kurau. While one of the Rynax fully integrates with Kurau, creating a hybrid Ryna sapien, the other goes into dormancy within her to recover from injury. Ten years later Kurau’s Rynax Pair finally emerges, taking the physical form of Kurau at the time of initial contact (except with longer hair) and being given the name Christmas (which holds special meaning for Kurau, although why doesn’t become clear until near the end of the series). Rynax only exist in Pairs, and the loss/absence of one member of a Pair typically causes the other one to feel lost and dangerously distraught. The emotions and connection involved in a Pair do not readily equate to familial, romantic, or platonic love; they have elements of all three, and yet are none of them. Evidence: The exact nature of their relationship may be hard to quantify, but the passionate commitment and deep love Kurau and Christmas have towards one another is indisputable. They live for each other in a fairly literal sense; the Bryan Adams song “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” could be their personal theme. They nearly always have each other in their thoughts, and usually long for each other when they are not together; the change in attitude in Kurau from the lonely, morose individual she was before Christmas manifested and the enormously happy version of her that we see afterwards offers a great testament to that. When they are forcibly separated, no amount of opposition or barriers keeps them from seeking to reunite as soon as possible, and later in the series Christmas rises to aid Kurau in fights, too. Why They Should Win: Raw relationship strength. Moreso than any other competitors in the Final Five, Kurau and Christmas are inseparable. For one to go through life without the other is akin to a left shoe going along without the matching right shoe; without both, you’re just limping along. The depth of their caring for each other is bottomless, and they show it every time they’re together. Video Clip Links: Clip #1 Clip #2 Clip #3 *NEW* Clip #4 Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima Series: His and Her Circumstances (aka Kare Kano) Nature of Relationship: Romantic. Background: Yukino had an image in middle school as being a perfect student, but in reality it was a carefully crafted façade to hide her true personality as a selfish and slobbish individual. She entered high school fully prepared to continue her ruse, only to find herself one-upped by equally perfect-seeming Souichiro. Soon each discovers the false front the other put up for other students, and in so doing they start to fall in love. Gradually they become a couple. Evidence: The internalizations and explorations of feelings that lie at the core of Kare Kano make it blisteringly apparent how fully and deeply these two fall in love with each other over the course of the series. Their love stands despite separations and occasional other problems, and it grows and matures as the series progresses and the two advance in their learning about, and experiencing of, love. The natural flow of their budding relationship is enthralling. Perhaps just as important is the effect they have on each other; with both of them, association with the other changes them – sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Why They Should Win: Romantic superiority. Of the final five duos, they are the only true primary romantic pairing, and they beat out some damn strong romantic competition to get this far. All brackets updated as well as mini-game scores: http://home.comcast.net/~unirizer2/
Major announcement concerning the mini-game. I have decided to split the $250.00 prize money three ways into 150/50/50 so that 2nd and 3rd place can come away with something too. It just doesn't seem right to have this heated contest end with only one winner. On a side note, ManOfRust has graciously offered to give up his prize if he is the ultimate winner, but I say to bad, you must accept the prize you get, I insist ^^ Going into the Final 4, errr I mean 5, ManOfRust still leads the pack, but as you can see from his picks last round, he must leave his fate as possible mini-game winner completely up to chance and of course his persuasive arguments |

And now the pairings. Vote carefully, as these decisions will determine which two duos duke it out for the title.

Semifinal #1.
My vote goes to: Jinto and Lafiel. Why: Because I value closeness and suitability over how much a duo can make me laugh. Sousuke and Kaname only became a serious couple (and then, not quite) in the third season, while three episodes into Crest of the Stars I knew Jinto and Lafiel were right for one another. They play off against one another so well, both in comedic terms and more often dramatical terms. They complete each other. He's the carefree spirit that offers her emotional support and a true friend, while she's the take-charge leader who brings purpose and direction into his life. Semifinal #2. My vote goes to: Edward & Alphonse Elric. Why: Well this is an easy vote. It shouldn't be, but out of these three I've only watched Full Metal Alchemist. I've heard plenty of good reasons why I should vote for Christmas and Kurau, but they were just not good enough. As the proverb goes, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." I'd rather go with the duo I know is great than one which I am not sure about. Last edited by dtm42 on Wed Aug 27, 2008 3:20 am; edited 2 times in total |

Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars vs. Group B Champion Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic Wow, an excellent choice of new video clips for this match-up. The Jinto/Lafiel clips shows a sequence from the third series so important that it's shown twice (the first time, at the beginning of the third series, in untranslated Baronh). This clip shows Lafiel at her most vulnerable, and the way Jinto addresses her at the end is, I believe, the only time in all three series that he addresses her that way. It shows beautifully how close they've grown over time. The Sousuke/Kaname clip, taken from TSR, is the famous "haircut" scene. Although one of the lowest-key scenes in all three FMP series, it is arguably the most intimate. Sousuke falling asleep in it is far from a display of rudeness; for him, in a strange way, it's the ultimate sign of trust. The display of emotion with which the clip closes is utterly uncharacteristic for Sousuke up until that point, and the cause of it is a strong indicator of how much association with Kaname has affected him. Despite the worthy merits for the latter duo, though, this one is a clear and easy decision for me. Jinto and Lafiel have a rare and precious relationship that is ultimately more deserving of a trip to the finals. Group C-D Semifinals Group C co-Champion Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist vs. Group C co-Champion Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory vs. Group D Champion Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano)[/quote] Ugh, what a mess! Although, for me, this is an easy choice. Had Aoi and Kaoru won last round I might have actually had to think about this one, but I find Kurau and Christmas's special bond to be much more endearing than Yukino and Arima and I'm not about to change my mind about picking them over Ed and Al at this point. (And FWIW, I have watched all of all three series, so this is a completely informed decision.) |

Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars vs. Group B Champion Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic This matchup is the easier of the two semifinals for me to make a decision on. For all the reasons I stated last round and for many more that I will go into detail if they make it to the FINAL BATTLE! Jinto and Lafiel get my vote. There was some discussion way back in the "tournament ideas" thread concerning what type of duo we should vote on. Romantic or comedic where the two top choices I believe. We eventually decided to include both. I gathered from this that the ultimate duo should probably be a little of both along with some other strong duo like traits. Both Sousuke & Kaname and Jinto and Lafiel have a little of both. Only one, however, is what I consider to be much more balanced in terms of comedic and romantic. Sousuke and Kaname are obviously more heavily leaning on the comedic side while slightly lacking on the romantic. This is quite evident in that they created a whole middle series, Fumoffu, focusing around the comedic elements of the show. Sousuke and Kaname never really cement the romantic side of their duoness. They come close showing us that it could happen and probably will eventually. I just can't bright myself to believe that it will ever be that strong. Kaname definitely could show her feelings, but Sousuke.... there's just no way. At the end of Second Raid spoiler[Kaname was was leaning against Sousuke crying her eyes out saying how much she never wanted him to leave her ever again and all he did was just stand there like a brick wall.] He's just too emotionless and battle hardened that I can't ever see taking them as a romantic couple seriously. Jinto and Lafiel are so much more equally balanced. I wouldn't say they are a strong romantic couple (although as the series progresses their romanticness becomes greater and greater). I wouldn't say they are a strong comedic couple (their comedic play with each other is a very witty and intelligent kind of humor that i find quite entertaining). They are just right. Add in their willingness to risk their lives for one another and their amazing potential to grow as a duo, gotta give a shout out for BotS 4 come on anytime now ^^, yada yada yada. Their just the better duo here and perhaps my pick to win it all. Competition on the other side seems strong. Getting to that: Group C-D Semifinals Group C co-Champion Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist vs. Group C co-Champion Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory vs. Group D Champion Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) Man super tough one. I already can eliminate Christmas & Kurau as per my reasons last round, and yes I still stand by them. I watched most of the beginning, middle, and a lot of the end of that series and I just never saw what was so great about them. (And on a side note, what was up with Christmas' voice?? It's unlike any other voice acting I've ever heard in an anime. Pretty annoying). So that leaves Kare and FMA. Hmmmmm, I guess I'll go with the long shot and say Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima. I have seen all of FMA and have only seen some of Kare Kano. Considering I'm picking the duo I haven't seen all of over FMA is really a testament to the impression they left on me. Going back to the Comedic/Romantic balance thing this duo show extreme strength in both categories. Most of the show is playing off it's manga origins and can be really silly at times in the typical quick paced crazy anime style. But when the show gets seriously romantic it is remarkable the turn it takes. We're talk'n some serious serious romanticness go'n on. Easily stronger than any other duo left in the tournament. And to me, it just works. It's very believable and can pull on the heart strings. I hope they make it to the final.... |

Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars vs. Group B Champion Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic Winner: Jinto & Lafiel Worthy though Sagara&Kaname may be, I don't see them to be as strong as Jinto & Lafiel. As dtm42 said, Jinto & Lafiel are complementary to one another. Spoiler from the third series spoiler[Lafiel even cry when she found Jinto alive even though Abriel cannot cry so as not to show favouritism.] Group C-D Semifinals Group C co-Champion Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist vs. Group C co-Champion Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory vs. Group D Champion Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) In previous round I voted for Christmas & Kurau so this I vote in favour of Edward & Alphonse. However, I will be happy whoever win. |

Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars vs. Group B Champion Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic Voting for Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic Reason: I finally got to watch Crest of the Stars this past weekend. An excellent series, and Jinto and Lafiel do deserve all the votes I have been tossing their way. However I have to go with Sousuke and Kaname on this one, mainly from the way these two change while they are seperated. Sousuke becomes quite a bit darker. Late second raid big spoilers. spoiler[ He kills in cold blood, attempts to start drinking, and picks up a prostitute that looks like Kaname. All because he believes that Kaname is dead. Later, he also talks back to a superior, and offers half of his pay to stay at his current post (protecting Kaname). That's something he would never have done before he met her.] Kaname (also fairly major spoilers)spoiler[ Almost gives up hope because Sousuke isn't there, she only survives because of the tools and training Sousuke left with her, and when she does come to her senses, she does not worry about herself, but travels to another country at a fairly big risk to her life just to try and be with Sousuke again.] Also, I believe that Kaname and Sousuke do work well as a comedy team, and function very well at almost any role that a duo can take. So I give them points for versatility. Group C-D Semifinals Group C co-Champion Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist vs. Group C co-Champion Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory vs. Group D Champion Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) Voting for: Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory Reason: I was planning on voting for the winner of group c this round anyway, regardless of the outcome of the last, and since I voted For Christmas & Kurau last round I see no reason to change it this round. I still feel they have a slight edge over Ed and Al. |

Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars
Reason: Souske and Kaname are not true proper duo material as I've said the whole time. People may disagree but this time there is no uncertainty. Jinto and Lafiel beat them hands down. They're closer as friends, act like a proper duo, and most importantly actually work together far far more then their counterparts. There is no logical reason why they should loose here. They out class the FMP duo in every conceivable way. Group C co-Champion Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory Reason: This is pretty much just the Group D fight all over again. And once again Kurau and Christmas are the deserving pair for all the reasons Theron and I have stated before. They go through as many battles as the Elrics, stand by each other like the Elrics, and everything else. But as Key said they do it with far more emotion. Plus for me the huge difference is Ed and Al are not fighting to BE TOGETHER. They're fighting to get their bodies back. Everything they do or don't do stems from that simple desire. Not to simply be together but to get their bodies back (and maybe bring their mom back if possible). Kurau and Christmas spend 26 episodes fighting to simply be together. Not to reverse any damage done, not to get back a body, or fight a war. They fight endlessly to simply be together in peace and nothing more. They literally in every way complete the other. And yet despite it all they are willing to risk losing each other at the end to stop the Rynax from destroying everyone. The Elrics are a great duo but Kurau and Christmas are simply an outstanding duo. They deserve to move on here just as they did before. And honestly Yukino & Souichiro just don't measure up to either Kurau/Christmas or the Elrics. They're a nice duo/couple but they are just outclassed by both of the other duos. |
