Group C:

Voting for: Jinto and Lafiel

Based on the guides, as I have not seen either series.

Group D:

Voting for: Christmas and Kurau

I've already said my piece against the Elrics, and I don't much care for the KareKano duo either. I think these two should win the tournament.

For some reason I've put off voting. Scatterbrained...

SEMIFINAL #1

Jinto and Lafiel from Crest of the Stars

It's a tough pick as I love both duos a lot, but...have to argue from the position of dynamics again. Jinto and Lafiel fulfill different roles in their relationship as it progresses, and they feel more like real people as characters the way they develop and help each other in different ways every time they are pitted together or even when they're apart.

Sousuke and Kaname, however, don't change much because they're just PERFECT the way they relate already. They're a scream. Still...I don't know. I have to vote with dynamics here. (I still feel stupid for voting Excel and Hyatt way back in round one against Jinto and Lafiel simply because I had seen next to nothing of the show. -.-' )

SEMIFINAL #2

Edward and Alphonse from Fullmetal Alchemist

Both of these duos are trophy-worthy, honestly, I think either one of the two could beat out any other pairing in the tournament, so it's kind of gnarly having to choose just before the finals. Still, Ed and Al for the win, and I have already explained my reasons, so I won't waste more breath. I'll just summarize:

1. DYNAMICS. (That's the biggest one by far. They don't continually fulfill the same role for each other even from the very beginning, and that makes them more unpredictable and interesting.)

2. NOTORIETY (When the race is this close, something has to be said for how well-known their strong bond is. There have been discrepancies over how the strengths of KPM have been communicated, but that doesn't change the fact that everyone with the faintest knowledge of FMA knows that these two would die for each other.)

3. PERSONAL TASTE (I said very early on in the tournament that I really appreciate action-based "manly friendships" that are well-developed, hence my fervor for Vash and Wolfwood early on. Platonic love is really a unique kind of bond and it's hard to portray in fiction without being corny. Parental love is easy to understand and believe. Romantic love you can even MAKE cheesy and contrived and people will still go for it. Girl friendships are open and easy to contrive in fiction. Guy friendships are more difficult to write and portray, and sibling relationships aren't always good ones for many people, so they have to be given good background to be convincing in a story. Ed and Al are a very visceral pair of brothers. They act like brothers and it's believable. They're not always mooshy-gooshy...but who is?)

Semifinal #1

Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars

Voting for Jinto and Lafiel.
Reasoning: Guides and others' posts. I haven't seen either series.

Group C-D Semifinals

Group C co-Champion Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

Voting for: Ed and Al
Reason: Personal preference. This pair and their relationship resonate more with me than Kurau and Christmas. The way they interact, how they're there for each other and how they disagree strike me as very true to life.

Tournament Semifinals are now closed.

Semifinal #1 Results: Jinto and Lafiel over Sousuke and Kaname 19-4
Summary: Despite the greater general popularity and name recognition of their foes, The COTS/BOTS duo stormed to an early lead and was never even remotely challenged. Regardless of how the finals turn out, they are the story of the tournament.

EDIT: The above vote total has been corrected to reflect the fact that I apparently can't accurately read my own tally marks. Razz

Semifinal #2 Results: Kurau and Christmas over The Elric brothers and Yukino and Souichiro 12-9-2.
Summary: Like last round, the KPM duo built an early lead but could never pull away. again, Ed and Al got a late surge of votes behind them, but they couldn't overcome the Kare Kano duo, too. The latter may have been out of the running for winning early, but they partly played spoiler by pulling away just enough votes from Ed and Al to help make the difference.

Commentary: That Kurau and Christmas made it this far should be little surprise to anyone who has seen Kurau Phantom Memory, and it's fitting that they had to battle Ed and Al twice to finally put them away; that's a testament to the strength of their competition. That Jinto and Lafiel pulled through, too, is a much bigger surprise to me, as I honestly didn't think enough people had seen that trilogy of series for them to have a chance of getting this far. In fact, I find it quite remarkable that, for all the concern over popularity being a determining factor in these contests, two duos coming out of series not even close to universally-familiar to anime fans are facing off in the finals. The number of times I've seen comments like "I've never seen the series, but the arguments are too convincing" or "the arguments in their favor have inspired me to want to see this series" concerning these two franchises is strongly heartening. Those reactions, and the sense that two duos who have proven themselves worthy on merit and impassioned support made it to the end, make me feel that this whole tournament was a rousing success.

Within a few minutes the pairing for the final battle should be posted. At its conclusion we will have at least a couple of days of post-mortem commentary before allowing the thread to pass.

Not that it's a major issue, but your math doesn't add up (I think Jinto and Lafiel have 19).

Oops, I meant to vote, I really did, but I probably would've reversed my quarterfinal vote to give Kurau and Christmas a little more lead, so no huge difference.

Tournament Championship Round is now open!

Nearly half a year of planning and voting, of whittling a field of 128 competitors (and far more considered pairs) down to a mere two, all comes down to this. Both come into this round with well-established pedigrees, lots of support, and victories over tough opponents, so there isn't a wrong choice here. But perhaps one is just a little more "right" than the other one? We shall soon see which one has the stuff to become ANN's all-time Best Anime Duo!

In honor of this round ccdx has prepared two extra-long video clips. All of the old clips for each, as well as full write-ups on the pairings, can be found here.

Finals
Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars [ Video Clip #5 ]

vs.

Group C co-Champion Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory [ Video Clip #5 ]

Vote away!

I get first vote dibs. Laughing

Finals Choice: Jinto Linn and Lafiel (Crest of the Stars)
Reason: Seeing as Yukino and Arima are now gone, I guess I'll go for the next best thing being Jinto and Lafiel. The two have the best chemistry together next to Yukino and Arima and I'm sure fans of the Stars anime saga were shipping on the two being a pairing at some point. So my final vote of this tourney goes to these two.

Finals
Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars

vs.

Group C co-Champion Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory

Voting for: Kurau & Christmas Jinto & Lafiel
Reason: Since the very beginning, I've believed that these two were the most deserving duo. I've seen no other pair of characters who care so much for each other and elicit so much emotion. That said, Jinto and Lafiel are the only other couple I might consider voting for over the two.
I still prefer Kurau and Christmas, but Jinto and Lafiel deserve to be closer in the tally.
Possibility of change: Changed

Drat, Ggultra beat me to first vote.

First, some points of information: the Jinto and Lafiel clip is, by all appearances, from the not-licensed-in-the-States Banner of the Stars III OVA series, which I dearly need to track down and see. Kurau and Christmas's clip, by comparison, borrows from the first and next-to-last episodes, so it's rather more spoilerish.

Strange how two less conventional bonds beat out all the romantic and familial pairings to get here, isn't it? And yet the merits of both are clear. In a way, this pairing presents a stark contrast. Jinto and Lafiel are two independent individuals who may have at first needed to be together, but over the course of time they came to want to be together instead. Kurau and Christmas, OTOH, define themselves primarily in terms of each other. They are so tightly bonded to one another that they need to be together, and it isn't pretty when they're not.

So want vs. need? Which is more important to your image of an ideal duo? For some who are having trouble making a decision here, that could be a key deciding factor. For me, I have to go with my heart. As much as I dearly love Jinto and Lafiel as a duo, Kurau and Christmas are my ideal, and thus, for me, they deserve the win just a little more.

Jinto and Lafiel.

Will post a reason later, I promise. And unlike two weeks ago, I promise to keep that promise.

I'm voting for Jinto and Lafiel. I am quite surprised that they made it all the way until the end but I'm glad they did. I think Key hit on a very important point in his post. These two are together because they want to be. They don't really need each other. Both are quite capable on their own. But together they compliment each other, they understand each other, and as good as they each are on their own they are even better when together. Lafiel in particular could choose to be with pretty much anyone she wants, but it's only with Jinto that she feels she can be herself.

I so much enjoyed watching the two of them throughout the run of their various series. Almost right from their first meeting the connection between them seemed so natural. It easy to think of relationships in real life where you hit it off with someone from the start and despite differences you may have you feel like the other person just understands you. It's not nearly so easy to convincingly create such a relationship with fictional characters because this sense of the two people understanding each other is conveyed through their attitudes towards each other and nuances of their interactions rather than through dialogue or some plot device. Jinto and Lafiel just feel right together, even though they are not pre-destined for each other, or linked by some supernatural connection, or really even in need of each other to be successful in life. They are together because being together makes them happy, and watching their story is something that in turn makes me happy.

Blah, my internet was out and I missed the last round just as I was about to post it. So I'll get this one done early so I know it gets done.

Group A Champion Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars

vs.

Group C co-Champion Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory

Voting for: Jinto and Lafiel

Reason: They do feel like the stronger couple, even if they didn't quite develop as a pair as completely as we might have liked. It's a tough call really, but Jinto and Lafiel just feel like a better couple as they show such comraderie and affection in all they go through and a bond that spans from love to friendship and everything between. They have a chemistry that just doesn't feel as fabricated as so many others do.

4-2 to Jinto and Lafiel already?

Wow.

Of course, there are plenty of avowed Kurau and Christmas fans (such as Murasakisuishou and abunai) who have yet not voted. Still, nice to see my favourite duo ahead, if for a short time.
