Yeah, disappointing news. Not that I was that interested in Hayate, but this and Clannad pretty much serve as a sign of the slow and painful death of the English dub.
Kinda weird that it won't be on TV. I mean, it could easily air on Sci-Fi, given that they've aired some Bandai series on there and Sci-Fi airs some pretty crappy shows/movies.... |

No TV deal? Yeah, that sounds about right, it's not the type of show for TV in America. As for the dub, as that is slightly disappointing, you have to remember it's a 52 episode series with a second season on the way that will probably be just as long, that's pretty expensive to dub and it's certainly no Gundam or Geass, so the fanbase isn't quite as large. In before everyone complaining about Bandai being a terrible company for licensing and not dubbing, this is still only speculation I'm sure until they say for real. I do hope Bandai releases it in boxsets, whatever they do, because singles at this point are infuriating.

Gintama again isn't the type of thing I could see on TV. Adult Swim just wants their own shitty programming, and Saturday night anime isn't really a viable time to give any kind of mass viewership. And dubbing that would also be painful given it's length and that it's not a "let's scream as loud as we can and yell our attacks" shounen. People have to realize that yes, anime is a luxury and this stuff depends on DVD sales. And when everyone is getting fired or losing hours, sacrifices have to be made. And besides, Gintama isn't even licensed. |

Yeah, that worries me greatly. I don't wanna see anime in North America devolve and be reduced to fan-subs or sub-only releases for anything that doesn't have a TV deal in place somewhere. |

Obviously they're right to be concerned about the show's sales prospects in this economic climate. But who do they think would want sub-only DVD releases anyway? The people who already saw the show in 720p with subtitles that are allegedly so much better than "ugly" DVD subtitles?

Actually a lot of anime companies are hurting for cash. Bandai recently announced layoffs as has Funimation. Media Blaster's CEO John Sirabella has made several posts about the difficult retail environment and it's affect on the R1 companies, especially the cutbacks at Best Buy. And I would like to point out that Bandai is probably the company being hit the hardest by the cutbacks at Best Buy. They always had a habit of over shipping product and over estimating sales. They're starting to get hammered by returned product, like Lucky Star and the multiple releases of Gurren Lagan. Even Funimation posted a 12% sales decline last quarter, despite increasing the number of titles they release significantly. It's quite tough right now in R1, and Hayate probably wouldn't sell enough now to cover the cost of a dub. I think the rather lackluster sales of Lucky Star forced Bandai to reconsider dubbing this one. |

I agree about the TV show, satire doesn't do really well in this country in the first place so I really don't think there would be much interest in the general population for HNG.
However, I'm quite happy it will finally be released. As far as dubs go, I usually give them a listen but this time I really don't mind I don't think I could comfortably listen to anyone other than Rie Kugimiya as Nagi. Although I do regret never understanding the "Osaka" dialect references for Saku. |

For one thing, a lot of the jokes in Hayate the Combat Butler would be lost in English because of the mass cameoing and use of Japanese puns and word plays.
Sure, dub fans can complain about Clannad and I guess that makes sense.. but really, if you watch this series you'd understand that a dub wouldn't really do the jokes justice, and without the comedy this series really doesn't have much to offer. |

Even though I haven't seen Hayate, I do agree that if it's too hard to translate, then no dub is understandable. While I generally have preferred watching anime comedy dubbed (while reading a comedy manga seems to maintain the humor, ex. Gintama, watching comedy anime via-sub seems to throw the comedic timing off for me. So when watching stuff like School Rumble or Azumanga Daioh, I prefer watching the dub.), I can live with it. I was kinda interested in Hayate already, and lacking a dub won't really affect my decision. Clannad, on the other hand, isn't the sort of show that would interest me anyway, so it didn't really affect my decision that it lacked a dub. |

If the jokes aren't translatable in dubs how are they translatable in subs? If you can write it in English then you can, obviously, say it in English. If it takes special captions to explain them then why not just have liner notes do the same? Really this explanation doesn't hold a lot of water with me.
